B r o a d c a s t e r s S h o w D a i l y 4 5 Tu e s d a y, A p r i l 9 , 2 0 1 3 BIG DATABASES TO BIG DATA FOR REELDATA By Jeff Spalla, Co-founder, Reeldata, Inc. ReelData announced the complete line of new products on display at the NAB Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas at the Reeldata exhibit booth N625. In the past few years, ReelData has embraced big data in a big way. "We have introduced several new products this year at our booth, N625," said Joe Lewis, Reeldata Co-Founder. "We're really excited about our whole new prod- uct line, including version 2.2 of our enterprise database production workflow software, MediaDB, and a new database for rental houses called Rental DB. In addition, we have a new server platform for transcoding and video capture, the Ingestor HDz2. Another new Reeldata product, the Media Content Bridge, MCS1, is our latest multipurpose server. Our customers get a preconfigured server system that's easy for us to support, and it comes loaded with great software. For instance, the MCS1 comes preconfigured as an NFS and CIFS bridge to accelerate connectivity between windows, mac and linux based storage servers." ReelData is displaying new partner products for big data at the booth too. The Panasas ActiveStor 14, the world's fastest parallel file system storage, the AMD SeaMicro SM15000 Server, the most dense, lowest cost server platform in the world; BitSpeed File Acceleration, to speed up connectivi- ty on WAN and LAN networks; Speech Morphing Translation Software, a new software for automatic language transla- tion in TV and Film; and Editware Device Controllers, with the brand new DIVA Hybrid Editing platform for file based editing on video servers. ReelData's product line has grown significantly. Starting out originally as database company, then adding support for servers and storage to help TV and film production clients, Reeldata now also sells and supports some of the most advanced technology in the entertain- ment industry. This year they offer sever- al new partner brands. 10 GB switches from Arista, cards and inter- faces from ATTO, Quantum products including the new Lattus-M archive storage system. "It's really exciting, how far we've come with Big Data storage," said Lewis. "We can scale to petabytes with some of the fastest technologies in the world. For instance, the Panasas ActiveStor 14 will scale from 1600 MB/s to 150 GB/s by sim- ply adding storage shelves. We've been doing a lot more work with Linux lately, but we're still very versed in Windows and Mac. Our customers like that." Visit the ReelData Booth N625. VISION RESEARCH'S PHANTOM BRAND STANDS OUT FROM THE COMPETITION An interview with Jay Stepleton, General Manager, Vision Research. BSD: Tell our readers about your compa- ny. What's your main line of business? JS: Vision Research designs and manufac- tures the Phantom brand of digital high- speed cameras. We have been in the high- speed imaging industry for more than 60 years, primarily developing camera systems targeted at scientific and industrial applica- tions such as manufacturing, automotive, defense and medical research. About seven years ago we entered into the TV and motion picture industry with the Phantom HD. We now offer a comprehensive product line geared towards our more traditional sci- entific markets as well as cameras like the Phantom V642 and Phantom Flex which were designed specifically for TV broadcast and the digital cinema industry. BSD: Where is your company based? JS: Vision Research headquarters is in Wayne, N.J. We also have a facility in Florida, one in Europe and several sales offices around the world. BSD: Are you introducing any new prod- ucts at NAB? JS: Yes, we are excited to announce the Phantom Flex4K, which has a native res- olution of 4096 by 2304, and supports both standard and high frame rates up to 1,000 frames per second (fps) at 4K res- olution, and even faster when windowed down. The camera offers excellent image quality and light sensitivity. This is our first completely self-contained profes- sional cinema camera, where all the menu controls are built into an intuitive on-camera control interface. The camera can be battery operated, has interchange- able lens mounts, and has all the inputs and outputs that are needed for a success- ful production. The Flex4K also supports both raw recording and in-camera com- pression to capture to one of several industry standard formats. BSD: Why did your company choose NAB for the camera's introduction? JS: There was some speculation that Vision Research was working on a 4K camera, and we felt that this was the per- fect opportunity to unveil the Phantom Flex4K. This is an early look at the cam- era; it is currently taking great images, but there are still features to turn on. We have plans to roll out the features throughout the summer and really put the camera through its paces before it hits the market. We expect shipments to start later this year. BSD: What distinguishes your products from the competition? JS: Phantom cameras have always stood out from competition in the high-speed market based on advanced features, image quality and workflow. Competition in the digital cinema market is a little dif- ferent than our traditional markets, but the Phantom Flex4K is truly unlike any other camera that exists. The Flex4K provides the ultimate in flexibility. It is designed to shoot 24-1000 fps at 4K resolution, up to 3,800 fps at 1080p, faster at lower resolu- tions, and it supports several different output formats and workflows. BSD: How can our readers find out more about your com- pany? JS: Visit us at booth C9046 at NAB for a first look at the new Phantom Flex4K as well as some of our other products like the original Flex, the com- pact Phantom Miro LC320S, and our sports broadcast Phantom V642 camera.
