B r o a d c a s t e r s S h o w D a i l y 4 3 Tu e s d a y, A p r i l 9 , 2 0 1 3 ERICSSON: REDEFINING THE OPERATOR CDN By Lisa Skelton, Head of Product Marketing, TV Content Solutions, Ericsson At Ericsson, we are dedicated to driv- ing thought leadership across three important areas of our industry: multi- screen, multi-platform and operator CDN. In combination, these sectors will provide a base to ensure industry growth as service providers and operators learn to efficiently utilize multi-platforms infrastructure and eco-systems to deliver rich, blended multi-screen consumer experiences on all devices. One of the most interesting aspects about Ericsson's most recent Mobility Report is that video has become the biggest contributor to data traffic vol- umes (25 to 40 percent) and is growing faster than ever. As we know, mobile devices are now a crucial component in the TV experience, which has caused an explosion in mobile data traffic and rapidly increased demands on the networks. The report also shows that the sub- scription types associated with large data volumes (such as those for mobile PCs and smartphones) are expected to exceed 4 billion by 2018, while mobile data traffic for smartphones will grow up to 14 times by the same year. With the global consumer shift toward broadband mobility continuing to grow, I think we will see an even greater number of operators demand- ing a more all-inclusive approach, one that encompasses the entire content delivery and distribution system. We have responded to this with the launch of the Ericsson Media Delivery Network, which breaks the boundaries of traditional CDN solutions with its unique, single-platform approach to the delivery of both managed and unmanaged content across both fixed and mobile platforms. The solution allows operators ultimate network control and efficiency, and positions them ideally within the media value chain for fast time-to-market innovation and monetization. Some of the key advan- tages of our MDN solution include enabling mobile operators to prioritize and manage traffic in a number of ways, which enables them to add to their business model and leverage their established consumer relationships; proving cost-effective accessibility and guaranteed quality for experience across all networks, enabling the deliv- ery of video, web content, and app downloads while accelerating com- merce; and a unique design to unite the delivery of managed and unmanaged content over fixed and mobile net- works by leveraging our advanced packet core and radio capabilities with converged cache. This is the first time we will demonstrating this solution at NAB, but it comes hot on the heels of its first award win. We were delighted to win the "Best Cloud or CDN Service Delivery" award at the TV Connect Industry Awards just a few weeks ago. This is the sev- enth consecutive year our team has achieved success at the cere- mony and we were thrilled to be recognized once again this year. As we move into an ever more mobile age, where multi-screen is increasingly ubiquitous in every opera- tor's TV offering, the need for an effi- cient and flexible unified CDN will become ever more pressing. The recep- tion our Media Delivery Network solu- tion has received since launch indi- cates we are offering industry leader- ship in this area and I am very much looking forward to demonstrating it here at NAB 2013 to show how it enables the delivery of consistent, high-quality TV experiences meet growing consumer expectations for TV Anywhere services. QUICKFILTER'S PROFOUNDSOUND ENHANCES LISTENING EXPERIENCE In many of today's consumer audio products, the audio often sounds flat and uninspiring with limited bass response, washed out dialog, poor sound separation and distortion at high volumes. Consumers have two options: Purchase expensive audio sub-systems or utilize the Quickfilter ProfoundSound™ software technology to achieve high quality audio regard- less of the end equipment. ProfoundSound is a software suite of audio enhancements, including bass enhancement, virtual surround sound, clarity adjustment and dynam- ics processing. ProfoundSound Control Panel At the heart of ProfoundSound lies the control panel. Here, features can be enabled, disabled or modified. The ProfoundSound default configurations are loaded on power-up. However, the ProfoundSound Control Panel allows the user to actually alter the DSP algo- rithm values to ones that are more suit- able to his ear, providing him with the ultimate control over his listening environment. These alterations can be saved as unique configurations that can be loaded on demand. ProfoundSound Bass Enhancement ProfoundSound Bass Enhancement enables consumers to enjoy the special effects of an action movie or the deep bass of a drum in a concert video with- out any extra add-on equipment. Rival technologies attempt to provide such bass enhancement by gaining up the bass region, which cause saturation and distortion. ProfoundSound Bass Enhancement operates on specific fre- quencies thereby minimizing distor- tion. The enhancement is dynamically adjusted so that bass is provided even at low volumes while preventing bass saturation at high volumes. ProfoundSound Virtual Surround Multichannel surround sound is diffi- cult to achieve with only two speaker channels. Using proprietary algo- rithms, ProfoundSound Virtual Surround brings the immersive experi- ence of multichannel recordings to a two-channel system. It even enhances traditional two-channel recordings, giving a listening experience no other competing technology can provide. How does it work? Multichannel recordings contain information in side channels, which disperse the audio when played back to increase surround sound effect. Even in two-channel recordings, where the dispersion is minimal, ProfoundSound Virtual Surround enhances the dispersion and allows a surround sound experience from two channels. ProfoundSound Clarity Enhancement Compression enables delivery of today's audio and video via reduced and manageable file sizes. Compression, however, limits the full range of audio (20 Hz to 20 KHz) even in an expensive home theater system or sound bar. With ProfoundSound Clarity Enhancement, this content is restored allowing consumers to hear full range audio from their PCs. ProfoundSound Dynamics Processing ProfoundSound utilizes the patented Quickfilter TruDynamics processing algorithms designed to maximize the listening experience regardless of the environment or source material. Bass, treble, and surround sound effects are quite often dependent upon what is present in the source material to achieve their effectiveness. The TruDynamics algorithms automatically optimize the effects no matter what the recording, thereby ensuring that desired sound is achieved regardless of how the track was recorded. Even within a recording, volumes vary, so that bass and treble can be washed out at low volumes. With TruDynamics, bass and treble levels are consistent within the recording.
