B r o a d c a s t e r s S h o w D a i l y Tu e s d a y, A p r i l 9 , 2 0 1 3 2 4 LIVEU SHOWCASES INNOVATIVE MOBILE APP SOLUTION FOR LIVE VIDEO TRANSMISSION LiveU, a leader in portable live video- over-cellular solutions, is presenting its new LU-Smart mobile app solution at NAB 2013, enabling high-quality live video transmission via any smartphone or tablet, based on LiveU's fourth gener- ation high-quality and resilient bonded uplink technology. Without requiring any set-up time, LU-Smart can be used for rapid news coverage. Reporters can simply take out their personal smartphone and transmit high-quality live video back to the studio, whenever and wherever they may be. Live reporting capabilities can be extend- ed to any person in the news organization. Samuel Wasserman, LiveU's CEO, said, "We've had tremendous positive feedback for LU-Smart from broadcast- ers, complementing other LiveU units in the workflow and further extending their newsgathering capabilities. LU-Smart enables any person with a smartphone to be a bona fide video journalist by simply downloading the software. It's an ideal solution for breaking news coverage, especially in locations far from urban cen- ters." The LU-Smart Mobile App Solution, which supports all iPhone, iPad and Android devices, increases overall band- width by combining Wi-Fi and cellular networks to reach optimal video quality. For example, operators can combine cel- lular and Wi-Fi to support connection to an external MiFi, enabling the bonding of two cellular connections in a single smartphone. In this way, users can bond the phones' internal 4G with external 4G for a very fast and more resilient uplink. LU-Smart is incorporated into the LiveU ecosystem by LiveU's unified management platform, LiveU Total™, enabling control rooms easily and effectively to manage multiple video feeds from LiveU units operating in diverse locations. Wasserman continued, "Our aim is to enable our customers to deal with live content coming into the control room from different locations, via multiple devices, in the most professional and simple way. Using LiveU's Total platform for a smooth workflow configuration, operators can deliver a more dynamic live video expe- rience to their TV and online viewers." DOLBY INTRODUCES THE DOLBY 3D FORMAT At NAB last year, Dolby Laboratories Inc. announced that it had developed a suite of glasses-free 3D technologies in collaboration with Philips. Since then, the Dolby 3D technology demo platform has won multiple awards and Dolby/Philips is now introducing the Dolby 3D Format, which will ensure broadcasters can deliver a best-in-class glasses-free 3D viewing experience. Dolby/Philips is approaching glass- es-free 3D with an end-to-end approach, from content creation, through distribu- tion, to playback. The Dolby 3D Format starts where content is created and goes through relevant points in the ecosys- tem/content-flow (pre-production to post-production). It encompasses post- production tools, compression for broad- cast and distribution and of course a state-of-the-art format-decoder plus a multiview rendering engine for playback. At NAB 2013, Dolby/Philips is demonstrating the Dolby 3D Format in its complete end-to-end usage, by decoding and playing back Dolby 3D Format content streaming live from the Vudu service. How this all comes together: Dolby/Philips partnered with The Foundry to integrate the Dolby 3D Format in its content creation tools: Nuke and Ocula. Nuke has been adopted by almost all A-list movie makers in post- production and also in previsualization in production. Dolby extended the stereo 3D content creation work- flow into Nuke, so now with a small incremental step, autostereoscopic content and helper data can be generated supporting the Dolby 3D Format. The data was then encoded using a Dolby 3D Format Encoder, and provided the compressed files to Vudu, who then stream the con- tent from their regular VOD server. Algorithms for real-time auto-con- version have limitations since all depth and rendering information has to be extrapolated from a stereo image. This can compromise depth range to hide arti- facts or depth errors. Also, rendering decisions may not always align with the original intent of the artist or studio. The Dolby 3D Format addresses these chal- lenges by embedding depth maps from the source into the stream, as well as injecting metadata that provides render- ing guidance. This way, maximum inter- object and global depth is maintained without side-effects of artifacts. Meta-data within the Dolby 3D stream also ensures that the rendered image is consistent with the creative/studio intent. The net result is that the broadcaster can ensure a spectacular glasses-free 3D viewing experience with correct, opti- mized and consistent depth, no artifacts, and amazing 3D effect at any angle. The Dolby 3D Format and real-time autoconversion solution is 100 percent backwards compatible with existing 2D/3D signals, and is also device/display independent. This means the same mod- ules can be implemented for TVs, tablets, PCs or smartphones. Dolby 3D is being showcased in booth number SU1702 at the 2013 NAB Show.
