Family support is an essential component for patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes trying to effectively man- age their condition. Even with the highly successful Dexcom G4 PLATINUM ® continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system, Dexcom recognizes that having a support system is critical to optimal diabetes management and care. Therefore Dexcom Inc. created the SHARE system, an adjunct remote con- tinuous monitoring tool that enables the user to share his or her glucose data with family, friends and other loved ones from afar. "The ability to share the continuous glucose data remotely, to almost any location, is a remarkable advance. This new device should help patients, families and care providers succeed with their overall efforts to improve diabetes con- trol and prevent both short-term and long-term complications while preserv- ing quality of life for patients with dia- betes and their family members," said Lori Laffel, MD, MPH, Chief of the Pediatric, Adolescent and Young Adult Section, Joslin Diabetes Center, in Boston. How Does Dexcom SHARE Work? Approved by the FDA in October 2014, Dexcom SHARE augments the G4 PLATINUM's CGM functionality, which provides dynamic data every five min- utes, quickly and easily showing the body's response to medication, food and exercise. Now with the SHARE device, a user can send his or her glucose levels, trends and data to five different followers through wireless secure connections. The product con- sists of the G4 PLATINUM receiver and the SHARE cradle. A user simply puts the Dexcom receiver in the SHARE cra- dle, which is paired with the sharer's approved Apple iPhone or iPod touch. From there, Dexcom CGM data is sent securely to Cloud technology and then on to the selected followers, where the infor- mation can be viewed from an approved Apple device. Keeping Loved Ones Connected The unique device allows followers to monitor their loved one's glucose activi- ty at school or across the country for peace of mind. "By using Dexcom SHARE, it pro- vides me with an added layer of pro- tection and securi- ty, especially in trying to prevent hypoglycemia at night, when it is most dangerous," said Lindsay Swanson, a financial analyst from San Diegowho has been "sharing" her data with her sister while her husband is on military deployment. Through customizable glucose alarms and notifications, followers can also help the sharer in times of need or just make sure they have an extra pair of eyes on the data. "It's intuitive and easy to use, but most of all, it's just another great tool to keep us safe," said Swanson. Visit Dexcom at booth #73335.
