The network was also big: 500 North American locations as well as international offices, serving a total of nearly 10,000 employees. The solution had to be robust. After reviewing its options, Rollins chose Globecomm's Tempo Enterprise Media Platform. Tempo provided man- aged video as a service, including live- event transmission and on-demand streaming over both Rollins' corporate network and the Globecomm content delivery network (CDN). Within its North American network, Tempo distrib- utes the program feed for viewing on newly installed flat-screen TVs in break rooms, served by computers at each loca- tion. International locations are served by the Globecomm CDN, which provides access to content over the public Internet or via satellite where the Internet is unre- liable. Bottom line: Targeted viewers can access Rollins content on all four screen types, including laptops and mobile devices, virtually anywhere in the world. Why was Tempo the right choice? According to Ramiro Banderas, Rollins Rollins ( Cont'd. from p. 1) Director of Media Services, "Tempo is a unique platform, which provides us the ability to grow and expand the reach of our training and communications. We like the fact that Tempo is a flexible soft- ware-based solution that can be modified and upgraded seamlessly and that the business relationship encourages Globecomm to continually improve the system capabilities." The Tempo solution offers better training and communication with cus- tomers, vendors and strategic partners, timely training for new services and products and near-real-time metrics to improve training effectiveness. "We now have a platform to reach the entire Rollins population," said Director of Training Craig Goodwin, "where the company can leverage economies of scale, and improve uniformity and con- sistency of learning throughout the organization. We can also provide corpo- rate communications and other informa- tion in an efficient and timely manner … both live and on-demand." For more information, stop by booth #SU6221. When the industry began transitioning from analog to digital video a few years ago, we recognized the need for fast, reliable file handling. ShotPut Pro for Mac and Win was con- ceived to help copy the contents of P2, HCSD and SxS cards quickly and secure- ly. It has since expanded to virtually every camera type, format and post workflows imaginable. BSD: Tell our readers more about post workflows. DM: Well, the Data Wrangler, or DIT, is just the first step in handling video files. We use checksum technology to assure them [and often their insurance compa- nies] that the files they've copied exactly match the camera originals. From there, files are moved about a facility and fre- quently copied. If you start with the file's checksum information at acquisition, you can confirm at any step downstream that each copy still matches the original. At NAB we're also introducing a new appli- cation named ShotSum™. It's basically a comparison tool for finding which files are the same and which are different across your computer, drives and net- work at any time in the process. BSD: Can you use ShotPut Pro to copy those files onto an LTO tape for archive? DM: Yes, well, you could do that. But a tape is linear in nature and doesn't pro- vide random access like a hard disk. For efficient tape authoring and retrieval, you need a managing application to control Imagine Products ( Cont'd. from p. 1) the LTO deck. It's also desirable to have a searchable index. BSD: What's unique about your LTO solution compared to the competition? DM: Our LTO backup software, PreRollPost™, simplifies the process from installation to use. We do all the tough things for you, like getting the drivers right, regardless of LTO brand and model. And PreRollPost is 'video aware,' meaning we know the various HD types and can extract metadata, gen- erate a thumbnail and proxies for clips and make them searchable. BSD: I've heard Discovery Channel requires video be delivered on an LTO tape. Does PreRollPost support that? DM: Absolutely! In fact, we were one of the first to embrace it. They have three types for differing content: field footage, graphics and program masters. Creating correctly formatted LTO tapes is simply a matter of dragging files into PreRollPost. The software automatically populates metadata information, creates appropriate folders and finishes the tapes. There's even a built-in Discovery Tape Verification utility to check any tape from any source against their requirements. BSD: We've talked a lot about file man- agement. Are there other products your company offers? DM: Yes, of course. We have various applications for transcoding, color-cor- rection and viewing. There's even an iPad app for organizing videos. AMV also supports its pro- ductions and client's needs with its spe- cialized video rental and sales depart- ments. Always evolving and creating new solutions, AMV has recently broadened its already impressive array of services. AMV Vice President Richard Duke stated, "It's been a busy year for All Mobile Video. In the past year we found a West Coast home for our mobile units and have launched a centralized Master Control facility at our Westar location in Cedar Hill, Texas." AMV has just expanded its central- ized Master Control with the installation of new Miranda Technologies infrastruc- ture at their Westar facility outside Dallas. Westar now provides video play- back services to 15 commercial and pub- lic broadcasting customers. Duke said, "When we decided to launch an outsourced centralized Master Control service, we knew a core compo- nent would have to be the most depend- able playout solution we could find to streamline operations for all the stations we serve. We're a long-time user of Miranda's Kaleido multi-viewers in our mobile production units, so we had a great deal of trust in the Miranda brand. We've come to rely on the efficiency and dependability of their solutions and knew that the iTX playout platform would sur- pass our performance requirements." AMV ( Cont'd. from p. 1) Each iTX output server is also equipped with basic graphics capabili- ties, enabling the operator to create CGs for iTX playout schedules, including color rectangles, background images, animated logos, transitions and visual effects. AMV's new West Coast division features a spacious Los Angeles field shop and offices with a fleet of locally based mobile units. AMV West has set its focus on the entertainment industry, already supporting more than 60 events in its first year of operation, including: Primetime Emmy Awards, Image Awards, ALMA Awards and multiple other projects, Rose Parade, various real- ity shows (such as Bachelor/Bachelorette series), concerts, comedy series, game shows and many more. The AMV West team also supports CBS's Big Brother live shows with a custom constructed control room. AMV continues to prove its philoso- phy of forward thinking. The ability to create innovative solutions with new tech- nologies is what maintains its status as an industry leader. Duke concludes, "As the new tools and opportunities become avail- able, AMV looks forward to continuing to provide its clients and the industry with the same dedication to excellence as it has over the last 38 years." Widely viewed by many as the next generation in the world of maritime and land mobile satcom, Inmarsat's new Global Xpress network comes online during 2014. It will provide a seamless worldwide broadband service, position- ing it as an attractive new choice for out- side broadcasting content delivery, with more than enough bandwidth to provide live HD transmissions. New Terminals Cobham SATCOM's three new EXPLORER Global Xpress terminals join a range of field proven BGAN and Ku-/ Ka-band VSAT terminals. Utilising the same new 75cm 4-segment reflector, EXPLORER 3075GX features a manual point positioner whilst the EXPLORER 5075GX is an Auto-Deploy Fly-Away VSAT solution. Uniquely, both terminals offer integrated Wi-Fi and are all new, highly robust designs, developed 100 percent in-house. A third Global Xpress antenna for Drive-Away solutions, the EXPLORER 7100GX will also be launched this year. Featuring a 100cm reflector, it is based on the established EXPLORER 7100 VSAT terminal. A Global Xpress field upgrade kit for the standard EXPLORER 7100 will be made available so broad- casters already using it that want to move to Global Xpress will have an easy and cost-effective upgrade path. Global Xpress will undoubtedly be important for broadcasters. It offers transfer speeds comparable to existing Ku-band solutions with the advantages of Cobham SATCOM ( Cont'd. from p. 1) smaller antenna packages and global coverage. In order to get the most from it though, Cobham SATCOM is stressing that reliability, mobility and easy opera- tion of terminals is vital. The company has been a major provider for all new Inmarsat services and following its suc- cess with BGAN, it's likely that EXPLORER will become a mainstay for broadcasters opting for the Global Xpress service. In Other News With the introduction of these new ter- minals, the most comprehensive portfo- lio of land-mobile terminals is expand- ing considerably. The recent BGAN addition to the range, EXPLORER 710 is specifically designed for broadcasters to deliver high quality content from the field from a highly portable package. It provides streaming rates over 650 kbps out of the box, when using the new BGAN High Data Rate streaming serv- ice, which today is the fastest on- demand video streaming via satellite with guaranteed QoS available. Cobham SATCOM plans to increase the streaming rate further. EXPLORER 710 will gain the added ability to bond the signals from multiple terminals via Ethernet and achieve IP streaming rates on the BGAN HDR streaming service of 1 Mbps or even higher. As the world's smallest and lightest Class 1 BGAN ter- minal capable of HDR, the EXPLORER 710 is positioned to support broadcasters in enhancing the quality of mobile out- side broadcasting.
