Consumer Electronics Daily News 5 5 Tuesday, January 9, 2018 you've done for clients in the last year? PB: Home automation is becoming the new standard. Not only does it help your home work harder for you, it's also con- venient and helps save on energy use. We regularly install smart thermostats, smart lighting, audio/video and even smart appliances. Forget what you need at the grocery store? Just log into your fridge and see in real time what's inside. CEDN: Will we see any cool tech in the upcoming HGTV special Drew's Honeymoon House? PB: So much cool stuff – I don't know where to start! We've got everything from a charging station for my electric car with remote access and controls, to a 360-degree camera system in the walk- in closet, so I can catalogue my wardrobe. CEDN: What's something you saw last year at CES that you've incorporated into your own homes? PB: We saw a much more advanced sur- veillance system that's typically used for commercial properties. We just had to implement it in our Vegas and LA homes. It allows for 24/7 live streaming and recording of all areas of the homes with instant trigger notifications if anything goes wrong. CEDN: What product would you suggest a client buy as their first smart home pur- chase? PB: Definitely a smart thermostat! It will instantly start to save you money on your Smart Home (Cont'd. from p. 1) heating and cooling. Then benefit from smart bulbs that use less energy and let you remotely control brightness and color. CEDN: What are you most looking for- ward to seeing at this year's CES? PB: Every year there's SOMETHING that surprises and delights me. Sometimes it's cool tech. Sometimes it's functional tech for the home. I'm hoping to see some cool things in the home appliance space. They are big ticket items that we use more than anything else. So, it's about time they work even harder. CEDN: If you could remodel a home for anyone, who would that be? PB: I feel like Elon Musk would be fun to renovate for. He has his hands in so many kinds of new tech and can really appreciate the value 'smart' brings to the home. CEDN: Have you incorporated technolo- gy into a home that ended up being a total flop? PB: I think it's important to always review and rate anything you buy so oth- ers can learn from your challenges and manufacturers can improve their prod- ucts. We have had security systems that didn't live up to the mark, as well as Wi- Fi equipment that was spotty at best. But knock on circuit board, all of the really cool stuff has worked just fine. Each unit is carefully tested by technicians and labeled with a "blue dot," the seal of qual- ity customers know to look for. Customers who are familiar with Blaupunkt devices will immediately notice the efficiently minimalist design, a signature of the brand. Style and func- tionality are different sides of the same coin, and the company understands the importance of this balance. Take a look at the design of the cam- era. The dash cam is small, so that it doesn't obstruct your view of the road, but within its compact casing, it has a powerful 1280x720 HD lens that logs everything you do – and don't – see. The sensitive G-Sensor detects movements in real-time, and because of the built-in microphone, it also captures audio activ- ity in real-time, making instant visual and Blaupunkt (Cont'd. from p. 1) sound playback easy. There is no need to get any additional accessories. To view the playback, download a DVR app onto your iOS or Android smart device. Gone are the days of track- ing, downloading and uploading footage just to find a specific replay. Input your device information, and voila! You can quickly rewind and fast forward down to second of the exact moment you're look- ing for. Need to share the footage with someone? Send it directly to them thanks to its Wi-Fi capabilities. With all things considered, this little cam can, and does, do it all. CES Innovation Award entries are judged by a preeminent panel of independent industrial designers, engineers and mem- bers of the trade media to honor outstand- ing design and engineering in cutting- edge consumer electronics across 28 dif- ferent product categories. All of Logitech's honorees can be found on display at CES 2018. You can also find the products in Logitech's space #CP9, right outside of the Las Vegas Convention Center across from Central Hall. The CES Innovation Awards are Logitech (Cont'd. from p. 1) sponsored by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)™, the owner and pro- ducer of CES 2018, a global gathering place for all who thrive on the business of consumer technologies, and have been recognizing achievements in product design and engineering since 1976. Entries are evaluated on their engi- neering, aesthetic and design qualities, intended use/function and user value, unique or novel features and how the design and innovation of the product directly compares to other products in the marketplace. Dotdot enables the open, mature and already widely adopted application layer at the heart of Zigbee to work across Thread's IP network – the same network technology fundamental to the internet. For product managers, new standards rep- resent risk. Dotdot and Thread are backed by global, industry-leading companies and represent two of the most robust, widely deployed and well-supported con- nectivity and interoperability technolo- gies, driving billions of products and net- works already in homes and offices. "Zigbee and Dotdot are the product of 15 years of innovation by our mem- bers, and the experience that comes from over a decade of building success- ful products," said Tobin Richardson, Zigbee Alliance President and Chief Executive Officer. "This maturity is why major technology leaders have cho- sen Zigbee, and Dotdot over Thread now brings that value to new markets. This marks the first of many partner- ships to come as we extend our applica- tion layer across additional networks to accelerate time to market and unify the IoT for all stakeholders." Zigbee (Cont'd. from p. 53) "The Thread Group's vision is to extend IP – the powerful foundation of the internet – to low-power IoT devices," said Grant Erickson, President of the Thread Group. "Just like the internet, this vision also requires the industry to put forth open, common protocols so devices from any vendor can work together. Dotdot gives Thread adopters an impor- tant option for that open, end-to-end con- nectivity and interoperability." How to Start Working with Dotdot over Thread The Dotdot specification is available today to Zigbee Alliance members. Additional resources, including the Dotdot Commissioning Application, will be available in Summer 2018, along with the opening of the Dotdot Certification program from the Zigbee Alliance. Thread launched its 1.1 speci- fication and opened its certification pro- gram in February 2017. The Zigbee Alliance and Thread Group now share a number of common authorized test serv- ice providers, and are working with them to ensure an efficient, seamless certification process for Dotdot over Thread adopters.
