Consumer Electronics Daily News 2 1 Tuesday, January 9, 2018 Team Research & CV Squared to Introduce Vehicle-Generated Computer Vision Metadata Analytics Solution As current trends of connected vehicles and autonomous driving accelerate, we will witness the explosive growth of data streaming out of vehicles – both in volume and in scope. Gathered via on- board sensors, it is projected that a vehicle may eventually generate as much as 10 to 50 TB of data every day. This data, if compiled and processed meaningfully, can then not only allow for an unparalleled level of safety that eclipses current advanced driver assis- tance systems (ADAS), but also allow for the creation of a reservoir of data with untapped potential economic value. The range of data that can be uti- lized extends across vehicle location and movement, mechanical diagnostics, driver behavior, road conditions and a variety of environmental information. Team Research's Astak brand thereby has launched the CV 2 Project – comput- er vision integrated with connected vehicles – to take on the future flood of vehicle collected data, in collaboration with CV Squared, Inc. On-board cameras, one of Astak's primary market specializations, will be instrumental in the collection of video data, which when analyzed and annotat- ed using computer vision technologies such as CV 2 , will be the most prominent aspect of the vehicular data explosion. This is because the rich information content conveyed by video has the greatest potential as an enabler of many innovative con- nected vehicle applica- tions – not only for driv- ing safety but also for social commerce and targeted advertisements. Video, on the other hand, poses significant technical chal- lenges due to its heavy burden on com- pute, storage and network resources. Applications that leverage the explosion of vehicular data must therefore evolve and expand in lockstep with the advances in onboard platforms, mobile networks (LTE-A and 5G) and cloud infrastructure. The relevance, effective- ness and intelligence of these applica- tions will be derived from the predictive models that are embedded in the appli- cations but are to be continually updated with the help of the cloud-based data analytics engine. The CV Squared solution as presented by Team Research intends to make full use of video metadata gener- ated by a video analysis mod- ule running on in-vehicle devices, called CV 2 :Vu. This device will work in tandem with the cloud-based data analytics engine. Delivering unmatched driver safety, the CV 2 solution will be highly sought after by fleet managers and those concerned with future traffic condi- tions, as well as firms whose interest lies in the compiled data. The figure below illustrates the functional components of the CV 2 solution. CV Squared is a development stage company based in San Jose, California. QIHAN Introduces Next Generation Sanbot King Kong Building on its success in delivering leading technology and expanding its portfolio of "robotics-as-a-service" solu- tions, QIHAN Technology Company (QIHAN) announced the launch of its next generation humanoid, Sanbot King Kong. The intelligent, cloud-enabled robot features bionic arms, advanced navigation and delivers on QIHAN's commitment to bringing indispensable services to government, hospitality, pub- lic service and retail industries. Unveiled for the first time at the 2017 World Robotics Conference in Beijing, Sanbot King Kong arrives in the North American market at CES 2018. "The launch of Sanbot King Kong represents our commitment to bringing the world the most advanced robotics solutions and supporting the needs across all industries," said Ryan Wu, Chief Marketing Officer, QIHAN. "We're excited about creating an artificial intelli- gence platform that will provide even more opportunities for robots to interact in our lives. Sanbot King Kong's open SDK development tools will also allow global developers to continue progress- ing industry applications for future gen- erations of this humanoid." Advanced Key Specifications and Features As the next generation in its line of robots, QIHAN expanded original fea- tures from Sanbot Elf, allowing Sanbot King Kong to execute valuable and rigor- ous tasks with a total runtime of 18 hours. External Hardware Standing at approximately 4.8 feet tall, QIHAN built Sanbot King Kong to more easily interact with humans. Sanbot King Kong now boasts two new bionic arms and hands that provide several degrees of freedom, similar to that of a human arm. Unlike current service robots on the mar- ket, Sanbot King Kong's digits are each powered by their own motor, allowing them to move independently. Sanbot King Kong's newly designed waist enables it to support heavier objects. When an unbalanced force is detected, the waist can automatically change the body's center of gravity and adjust its posture. This allows Sanbot King Kong to perform well in hospitality services including food delivery and pre- vents it from falling over when carrying objects on uneven terrain. Featuring an advanced four-wheel drive system with an external wheel motor and Mecanum wheel chassis design, Sanbot King Kong can move at speeds up to five meters per second. This exceeds the average human walking speed (1.5 meters per second). In addi- tion to its sophisticated movements, Sanbot King Kong is able to tow up to 165 pounds. Internal Hardware Beyond Sanbot King Kong's exterior enhancements is a strong R&D founda- tion and upgraded internal technology. Wielding six built-in microphones in its head, Sanbot King Kong has a strong speech recognition program that sepa- rates background noise in busy and loud areas. Stemming from QIHAN's partner- ship with IBM Watson and Nuance, Sanbot King Kong is also equipped with innovative speech recognition technolo- gy and can identify and communicate in 26 different languages. Even more notable in the field of commercial service robots, QIHAN has created the robotics industry's first tech- nology using multiple 3D cameras vSLAM (vision simultaneous localiza- tion and mapping). This breakthrough technology combines infrared, ultra- sound and visual obstacle avoidance technology to help Sanbot King Kong efficiently map out unfamiliar environ- ments and even avoid glass doors and falling objects. An additional new feature includes a new security password system located on the back of Sanbot King Kong's head. In the form of a password-configured cover, this new security system helps protect the robot from unwanted access to its multi- ple USB ports and power-supply ports.
