Consumer Electronics Daily News 4 5 Wednesday, January 10, 2018 W3C Automotive Standards Gain Traction with OEMs JLR, VW, Tier Ones and GENIVI Alliance The ecosystem for the automotive industry is paying closer attention to the importance of web and automotive standards from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) with increased par- ticipation in W3C's web and automo- tive activities from OEMs and W3C members Jaguar Landrover and Volkswagen as well as Tier Ones Inrix, Mitsubishi and LG and enhanced col- laborations with auto industry associa- tions such as the OMA and the GENIVI Alliance. Cost reductions, productivity gains and greater interoperability are among the key business drivers for the auto industry's increased interest in devel- oping and implementing W3C stan- dards and the Open Web Platform, HTML5, Qt and other app frameworks, according to Ted Guild, W3C Automotive Lead. W3C is currently working on application programming interfaces (APIs) for Vehicle Signal API, Media Tuner API and IVI Navigation for Location Based Services (LBS). W3C has a Privacy and Security Task Force to produce guidelines and improve standards to protect connected vehicles. Additionally, W3C recently launched the Automotive Web Payments Task Force to explore requirements to enable payments use cases, including tolls, road usage, parking, fuel/charging and other types of transac- tions on behalf of a vehi- cle. Consumers today expect their cars to be another connected device capable of deliv- ering the same informa- tion and high performance applica- tions they expect from their Web- enabled laptops, mobile phones and televisions. To achieve this kind of interoperability, the automotive ecosystem is turning to established technical web standards such as HTML developed by W3C. The W3C web and automotive activ- ities include a standards-track Working Group doing the technical specifications and a Web and Automotive Business Group that iden- tifies use cases and requirements for potential new standards work for vehicles. As existing in-vehi- cle system speci- fication work is nearing feature-complete status, the group is starting to consider a version 2. Together, W3C and GENIVI mem- bers include several hundred global companies representing a broad range of interests in the automotive ecosys- tem.
