Consumer Electronics Daily News Wednesday, January 10, 2018 8 The Power of Marketing Mail in a Digital World Breaking through digital noise to reach consumers is increasingly difficult. One solution? Bridging the gap between digi- tal and physical platforms to create inter- active, omni-channel experiences for consumers. Marketing mail remains highly val- ued at America's residences – in terms of response rate it outperforms all digital channels by nearly 600 percent (Direct Marketing Association, "Response Rate Report 2015") and 92 percent of con- sumers surveyed have a strong or extremely strong attachment to mail (USPS Mail Moments Study, 2016). Marketing is evolving quickly – and so is the role of mail in integrated cam- paigns. There are numerous opportunities to combine marketing mail with digital mediums. For a more impactful con- sumer experience, here are a few ways to integrate marketing mail into your next marketing campaign: 1. Deliver a physical, digital experience. A piece of paper can be the gateway to an immersive digital experience when tech- nology such as near field communication (NFC) or augmented reality (AR) are integrated. NFC chips can be inserted into a sticker, and by using their smartphone, consumers with NFC-enabled mobile devices can connect to a brand online without downloading an app. Utilizing AR, consumers can superimpose a digital image onto a smartphone's camera screen. This feature provides practical and interactive uses – imagine the benefit to a furniture company allowing con- sumers to place a 3D couch in their home to see how it looks before purchasing. 2. Think outside the envelope. Marketing mail goes beyond the standard mailer you likely envision. Services like MarketMail ® help separate your mail from the competition with lightweight, 3D or shaped mail and ship- pable designs that open by folding, pulling or popping up into a dynamic piece. Go a step further by immersing your mail with electronics to deliver a recorded com- mercial on a mailer. Paper pockets can include a battery, shat- ter-resistant screen, speaker and all nec- essary wires to control buttons and video, and built-in Wi-Fi connection will track how many times each piece is activated. 3. Know your audience – on and offline. Research from the USPS Mail Moments 2016 Review reveals Americans continue to be engaged with their mail, with 81 percent of participants acknowledging that receiving a handwritten letter, note or greeting card holds significant value to them. This emotional connection to mail can be valuable in telling a meaningful brand story. Similarly, understanding your target audiences' shop- ping tendencies both on and offline – and connecting them – can help you create customized, omni-channel campaigns. For example, 66 percent of consumers make purchases from catalogs received in the mail by going online to a store's website (April 2017 Catalog Research). Success of omni-channel inte- gration can be measured by providing personalized URLs or QR codes that track direct traffic to your website from mail marketing pieces. No marketing medium so reliably reach- es the American consumer as mail does. When developing omni-channel market- ing campaigns, consider harnessing the power of mail to help your business boost engagement and create a unique – and tangible – consumer experience. Trinseo Provides Performance Plastics for Wearable Fetal Monitoring Device Last year Trinseo, a global manufacturer and compounder of performance plastics, began supporting Mo Fe Ma, a startup company based in Poland with one of its materials. Trinseo's EMERGE™ PC/ABS 7700 Advanced Resins, a com- pound made with polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), can now be found in the ZuzaMED device, an innovative mobile fetal monitor. ZuzaMED is a small, portable wearable device that rests on the maternal body of expectant mothers to monitor the health condition of the fetus as it develops. It is worn across the belly and can be used without any restriction to length of time. Trinseo's plastics are widely accept- ed and used in the medical devices indus- try. This particular material meets the technical and aesthetic requirements of the application, including biocompatibil- ity for extended skin contact, low density for light weighting and UL 94 flame retardancy to provide for the user's safety and colorability. The material is also durable to withstand movement and jar- ring, resists dirt and grime and is able to be cleaned with a 40 percent alcohol solution. ZuzaMED is the first product offered by Mo Fe Ma. It is considered by Poland officials to be of major impor- tance for soon-to-be moms and their chil- dren. It can be seen and purchased at www.zuzamed.pl. VELOX, a distributor of Trinseo medical resins in Europe and part of Trinseo's global network of distribu- tion partners, successfully positioned Trinseo's EMERGE PC/ABS 7700 Advanced Resins for the application. The material was speci- fied because of its unique ABS component. Produced using Trinseo's proprietary mass polymerization technology versus an emulsion process, Trinseo's ABS results in exceptionally white base resin which was essential for the appli- cation that needed the base color to be with little yellowing as possible for ease of coloring. Trinseo has worked with customers in all areas of consumer technologies. It has focused in areas ranging from elec- tronics to medical devices to lighting to automotive on material challenges that include biocompatible plastics for skin contact applications, to chemical resist- ant materials that won't degrade when exposed to aggressive solutions, to transparent light diffusion grades to allow for translucent LED displays, to plastics with a certain percentage of recycled content. As you develop your design and sourc- ing strategy, consider Trinseo as one of your partners for tak- ing your products to market. The company is focused on delivering innovative per- formance plastics solutions to help cus- tomers across a wide range of end-mar- kets with their very specific needs. Join Trinseo in the Venetian Towers Hospitality Suites area for a brief overview of its materials presented by Dr. Tony Samurkas, Global Director of Performance Plastics technologies, fol- lowed by an opportunity to discuss your needs with one of the application develop- ment specialists on Wednesday, January 10 from 10:30-1:30 (presentations at 10:40, 11:40 and 12:40) or Thursday, January 11 from 3:30-6:00 (presentations at 3:40 and 4:40).
