Consumer Electronics Daily News 4 5 Sunday, January 8, 2017 SMART CARS, CITIES, HEALTHCARE, MANUFACTURING TO BENEFIT FROM W3C WEB OF THINGS STANDARDS FOR IOT Industry analysts, including Gartner and McKinsey, expect there will be tens of billions of connected devices by 2020. Smart cars, smart cities, health- care and smart manufacturing are already leading the way today. This exponential growth is forecast to drive new services and revenue opportunities across many domains and is expected to transform how businesses operate and compete. There is a major road- block, however, to achieving this vision: interoperability. "The Internet of Things suffers from a lack of interoperability across platforms, resulting in fragmentation and silos that are holding back the business potential," said Philipp Hoschka, Industry Management at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the global organization that develops web standards. To address the challenges of incompatible platforms and the very wide range of technical requirements across different devices and domains, W3C plans to define global standards for an abstraction layer for the Internet of Things (IoT) that will enable open markets of services embracing different platforms and standards. This abstrac- tion layer is web-based and is called the Web of Things. "W3C's approach to the Web of Things focuses on open standards for metadata that describes the interaction model exposed to appli- cations, the communication patterns and security details for given plat- forms, and semantic models as a basis for shared meaning, enabling discovery, composition and valida- tion of services," said Dave Raggett, W3C Champion for the Web of Things work. By simplifying application devel- opment and enabling interoperability across platforms with web standards, Raggett believes the Web of Things vision for IoT will be realized much sooner. For the past two years, the W3C's Web of Things Interest Group has been working to define use cases and requirements, with a strong focus on smart manufactur- ing, under the leadership of representatives from W3C member organizations, including Siemens, Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Fujitsu, HP, KDDI, RWE/Lemonbeat and Deutsche Telekom. Next, W3C will begin standardization work on Web of Things with a new Working Group starting in the first quarter of 2017.
