BL: With over 250 million units shipped and having received multiple awards for product innovation, mCube continues to enable developers to innovate with the world's most advanced inertial sensing solutions for smartphones, wearables, medical devices and IoT devices. CEDN: What's mCube's vision? BL: As a technology leader, mCube aspires to be the enabler for the Internet of Moving Things (IoMT) by putting a MEMS motion sensor on anything that moves, improving the way consumers live and interact with technology. CEDN: What's IoMT? BL: Some analysts predict more than 50 billion devices will be connected to the Internet by 2020 and a large per- centage of those devices will be in motion. From smartphones and tablets to smart clothing and wearables, mCube is enabling a new era called the "Internet of Moving Things," where the movement and context of everyday objects and devices can be measured, monitored and analyzed, generating valuable data and insights that will transform consumer experiences. CEDN: What is mCube's differentiating technology? BL: Our award-winning 3D monolithic single-chip MEMS+CMOS technology. With the mCube approach, the MEMS sensors are fabricated directly on top of IC electronics in a standard CMOS fabri- cation facility. Advantages of this mono- lithic approach include smaller size, higher performance, lower cost and the ability to integrate multiple sensors onto a single chip. CEDN: Tell our readers about the need for a three-axis accelerometer in IoT and wearable applications, or what you refer to as IoMT. BL: Ever since we introduced our new IoMT motion sensor product, we've had customers all over the world approaching us, telling us that they need to use mCube, because no other accelerometer in the market can meet their needs for either small size or low power. So now we're putting more energy in expanding in this IoMT area, leveraging our technology leadership. CEDN: In addition to the sensor, how is mCube adding value to customer proj- ects? BL: We are working on helping cus- tomers solve system level problems. We found that to get the total system power consumption down, it's really a combina- tion of sensor, algorithm and system inte- gration working altogether with the MCU. I think we know better than a lot of MCU companies about what it takes for an MCU to be low power at a system level. We have customers come to us and say "Wow, you've solved 90 percent of our problems, why don't we just license the whole solution from you." I think that's the key: find ways with spe- cific applications to add value at a system level. CEDN: You are able to compete with big existing players by focus- ing on power consumption, size, packaging and offering great solu- tions. What are your key advantages, your strengths? BL: mCube's key advantage is our tech- nology leadership. Our latest three-axis accelerometer features the industry's lowest power consumption and the world's first microscopic 1.1x1.3 mm Chip Scale Package (CSP). The new MC3672 will enable developers to design a complete three-axis inertial solution, with only a single resistor, in less than eight square mm of space on a printed circuit board. The ultra-thin pro- file of 0.7 mm and small footprint will enable designers to integrate inertial sensing into the next generation of wearables, hearing aids and medical devices. My avatar can do things I cannot do, or am fearful of doing, in my real life. Think about what you might have dreamed about doing? I start my virtual day whenever I have a little free time. I could be waiting for my train to go to work, or at lunch or at night when things have quieted down. I can play my virtual life on my mobile device, on my PC and in virtual reality. You and your avatar meet your friends in Next Island. You decide what you want to do today. I am going to first ride my virtual horse. I call him Fantasy. I will ride around the island, see what is going on, who has built mansions on the beach. Maybe I will do that soon. One of my favorite things is to time travel. Today I am going to go to Jurassic Island, where the dinosaurs live, and go on a quest. I am trying to tame a dinosaur, but today I am going to look for new breeds around the Jurassic Island. Look out for the T-Rex. Next my avatar will time travel to Coney Island, Steeplechase Park, during the years when it was the world's playground. Yum, I can smell the cotton candy! Going to ride the Cyclone in virtual reality with my friends. Screaming is permitted. I have my own business here. I am a pilot of a plane that takes visitors around the islands. I am starting to make a little gold. I am meeting with a corporation that has joined Next Island and wants to discuss putting their logo on my plane. Tonight, to end my virtual day, I will go to DJ Karin's Club to hear great mixes, dance and meet some new avatars. It is a great way to blow off a little virtual steam. Tomorrow is a new day with many other things to do. Yes, there are quests to win a billionaire's life, and dangers to avoid or meet head on.
