LOCAL MOTORS OPENS UP CREATIVE PROCESS The last thing on anyone's mind when it comes to auto manufacturing is co-cre- ation, unless you're Local Motors Chief Executive Officer Jay Rogers. "Local Motors opens up the design process with an open-source approach that allows everyone to participate in product development," Rogers said. One of the proud projects to come out of this collaborative method is the world's first 3D-printed production car. Local Motors invited submissions for designs in Project Redacted; the winner was Kevin Lo, whose LM 3D Swim and Sport designs won. The Swim is set to hit roads in 2016, in style. "I drive a Rally Fighter, and you can't drive one of those down the street without 14 people taking pictures," Rogers said. "The 3D-printed car, the LM 3D Swim, is the first model from the LM3D series and it's similarly striking. It's called Swim because it's meant to be an outdoor beach vehicle." Using direct digital manufacturing, printing a vehicle only takes about 40 hours and the vehicle is customizable at the press of a button. In making this change, Local Motors has streamlined the entire process and opened the imaginative doors for future buyers. If a buyer wants to customize their vehicle, they can quickly have the removable body panels replaced – also meaning a cheaper, high-quality replacement when the body is damaged. The car will be on exhibit this year at Local Motors' booth at SEMA. However, one car is not all the company has in store for 2016. "You're going to see the launch of four more models, with our money where our mouth is," Rogers said. To meet demand for the new vehi- cles, Local Motors plans to build 100 new microfactories in the next 10 years. Each factory provides 100 jobs and brings the cars closer to buyers. Close proximity to buyers means reduced delivery costs (up to 97 percent) and less trucking means fewer emissions. There could be a sustainable, 3D- printed-car-making micro-factory com- ing to a city near you. "You may see a micro-factory come along quickly in cities such as D.C., Detroit, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, Dallas, Austin, Chicago – those are really big hitters," Rogers said. "These are really powerful places which have a lot of innovation, but they aren't as much on the national map, so it's exciting to see which of those areas are popping up." AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS FROM ZF ZF has been a pioneer in mobility for a century, but it wasn't until 1967 that the company produced its first automatic transmission for passenger cars: the 3HP. Introduced in the BMW 2000 C, the driv- ing experience offered little in the way of noise and vibration comfort, no servo assistance when steering or under brak- ing and no air conditioner. Fortunately the 3HP's automatic gear changes were even more memorable for their smooth- ness and comfort. Since then, ZF has gone on to deliv- er the world's first five-speed automatic transmission for passenger cars, the first automatic six-speed automatic transmis- sion and one of the world's first eight- speed automatic transmissions. Known for its efficiency, and per- haps even more impressively, its flexibil- ity, ZF's eight-speed automatic transmis- sion (8HP) is available in hundreds of vehicle models. It's hard to believe that the Maserati Ghibli has anything in common with the Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck, but it does: the same ZF automatic transmis- sion. The 8HP in the Ghibli enables the 434-bhp sports sedan to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds. In the Ram 1500, it provides the power to deliver the towing and hauling capability synony- mous with a reliable pickup truck. Of course, the transmissions in the two vehi- cles aren't absolutely identical; in each case, ZF engineers customized the basic unit to meet the special requirements associated with each application. "Modular" is the magic word that explains the 8HP's success in the market- place. ZF uses the basic transmission unit as a plat- form for a wide range of applications. The 8HP is cur- rently installed in more than 600 different vehicle model variations. ZF's main 8HP production plant outputs around 10,000 customized units every day. For comparison, in 1975, ZF churned out just 43,000 units per year. The success of ZF's 8HP, however, hasn't stopped the company from inno- vating. Just two short years ago ZF debuted another world first: its nine- speed automatic transmission (9HP), which has taken a different approach from the 8HP. The transmission is designed for vehicles with front transverse engines – that is, for the world's fastest growing passenger-car segment. In fact, some 75 percent of all cars produced are fitted with front transverse power plants. The 9HP has made a big splash in the indus- try. Although it's been on the mar- ket for less than two years, it's already installed in nine model ranges built by seven different carmakers. That's just the start. This wild success is primari- ly due to fuel efficiency. One spe- cial feature of ZF automatic trans- missions is that they keep engines run- ning at low engine speeds, which helps reduce fuel consumption. At a time when vehicle emissions around the world are subject to strict CO2 limits and fuel econ- omy standards, this is more important than ever. With each generation, ZF makes its automatic transmission more fuel effi- cient, more agile, more diverse, and more individual – and with innovations in dri- veline electrification for hybrid modules, plug-in hybrid systems and all-electric concepts, there's no end in sight.
