W i r e l e s s W o r l d T h u r s d a y, S e p t e m b e r 1 0 , 2 0 1 5 2 0 PRODUCT DISTRIBUTION FOR ICT By Mark Pitts, Vice President of Business Development At Power & Tel, we have a long history of bringing top industry products and technologies to our broadband service provider customers, where connectivity is a top priority. Now, with the explosion of wireless broadband services, Power & Tel has taken a leadership position with our traditional vendor companies to drive the convergence of all Information & Communications Technologies (ICT) products into a single supply chain provider. At the show this week we are dis- playing products from 3M™, Clearfield and Fujitsu. 3M, through its Electronics and Energy Business Group, has been a leader for many years in the telecommu- nications service provider network and is now investing R&D in products focused on the wireless networks such as 3M Slim Lock and Cold Shrink products for weatherproofing, No Polish and Crimplok™+ fiber connectivity solu- tions, and Tower Dome closures for tower top termination/distribution. Clearfield's stream-lined, practical approach to the distribution, consolida- tion, management and protection of fiber has saved countless telecommuni- cations service providers time and money during FTTx projects and Clearfield is bringing that same expert- ise and product excellence to reducing TCO for wireless net- works. Clearfield's FiberSmart is the only fiber management plat- form to be designed around a sin- gle architecture – the Clearview cassette – for the inside plant, out- side plant and access network. When FiberSmart products are coupled with Clearfield's FieldShield optical fiber protection platform, the resulting solution protects fiber through every distribution point of the network. Since the earliest days of high-speed telecommunications networking, Fujitsu has maintained a leadership position in moving data from Point-A to Point-B. Today, this leadership position is still rec- ognized utilizing the latest transport tech- nologies needed to move large amounts of data to consumers at the edge of the network. Fujitsu's FLASHWAVE Packet Optical/Ethernet Access family of products, FRX-3 Long- Haul Microwave radio systems and GX4000 E-Band radio sys- tems enable the networks to with- stand the constant load placed by today's applications. These vendors, along with many others, have enabled Power & Tel to be a single-source supply chain resource for broadband service providers deploying a wide variety of ICT products to provide lightning-fast broadband and enable cloud services which are demanded by today's consumers. ERICSSON TURNS CHANGE INTO GROWTH Technologies like cloud, 5G, IoT and analytics have revealed a world where products, services, information and entertainment can be personalized down to a segment of one. Business models designed to sell to the masses now must be retooled to "sell to masses of individ- uals." This transformation involves build- ing highly adaptive networks, systems and services to meet constantly evolving expectations and business models. For network operators, this means transform- ing networks, systems and media to serve these evolving customer requirements, while still meeting customers' demands today! Ericsson is helping operators turn this required business evolution into tremendous opportunity through strate- gies that address the four key areas of transformation: networks, IT, media and industries. Efficient Networks that Adapt Network infrastructure and software are becoming a ubiquitous fabric that enables consumers and businesses to experience new services, while assuring specific grades of service for every user instance. Mobile and fixed connections must work in unison to provide a single service delivery experience. Going forward, we will see networks evolving towards 5G – driving new lev- els of network performance. Cloud infra- structure will be critical, where automa- tion drives better IT performance that runs real-time infrastructure "as-it-is happening." Leveraging SDN and NFV, new network agility will provide service performance, security and efficient resource allocation. Ericsson's HDS 8000 provides a highly efficient platform for deploying cloud capabilities to match the flexibility demanded by programma- ble networks. Agile Systems that Think Network operators are transforming into agile Digital Service Providers, ensuring customer experiences that are contextual, consistent and secure across all devices and locations – and across all customer touch points. Delivering these personalized experiences requires augmenting network intelligence with IT intelli- gence in the form of integrated software, data analytics, infor- mation management and con- trols, and new delivery models that leverage cloud and X-as-a-service. The transformative power of IT intelligence eliminates data silos, consol- idates data assets for enterprise-wide use, opens opportunities for revenue creation, integrates legacy and emerging technolo- gies and drives process improvements. Ubiquitous Media that Captivates The media value chain is morphing into a dynamic ecosystem. Disruption from the internet enables new players to enter and former partners to become competitors with the same goal in mind: moving clos- er to the consumer to form powerful brand relationships and provide the ulti- mate end user experience. Consumer expectations continue to evolve into an expanding appetite for anytime, any- where customized content. The viewing experience must be per- sonalized, optimized, contextualized and socialized – delivered at anytime and anywhere, while meeting high quality and performance expectations. As a global leader in media services, Ericsson is helping cable and telco operators design, deploy and manage hybrid solutions to serve cus- tomer needs. Smart Devices that Communicate Next generation mobility is driving opportunities for all industries, helping businesses transform to compete in the Networked Society. Innovators in the utilities and transportation sectors are absorbing the lessons of the past, and are moving away from single-purpose solutions in recognition of the increas- ing interconnectedness in The Networked Society. Information and Communications technology invest- ments may commence with today's pain points, but they must scale to address new challenges and opportunities as the marketplace becomes global. As a glob- al leader in ICT solutions, Ericsson is helping businesses in key industries understand and leverage the new capa- bilities emerging in the Networked Society. MJ: Aeris is a pioneer in machine-to- machine (M2M) communications, an integral part of the Internet of Things (IoT). We have been in the IoT indus- try for almost 20 years, and our cus- tomers include such names as Hyundai, Acura, Rand McNally, Leica and Sprint. Building on our years of investment in our own core network, application platforms, billing and man- agement systems and cloud infrastruc- ture, Aeris is now making access to the IoT world faster, cheaper and more rel- evant to individual companies and car- riers. WW: Is the IoT industry mostly hype, or is there truth to its growth? MJ: The IoT industry brings together people, process, data and machines to make networked connections more rele- vant and valuable than ever before. The IoT industry is expected to reach over $10 trillion by 2022, driven by the more than 50 billion devices that will be con- nected. It will bring significant improve- ments in how businesses operate. It's also clear that the industry hype is backed up by hard evidence of major IoT deploy- ments across a wide range of industries, reaching into our homes, cars, offices, factories and even into our clothing and healthcare. WW: What do you see as some of the challenges facing the IoT industry? MJ: Today, it is difficult for many busi- nesses to manage the complexity of all the options related to developing and deploying IoT. Factors including device enablement and integration issues through connectivity to the man- agement areas have stifled wide- spread IoT innovation. Also, con- cerns about security as we move into a world where devices talk to other devices with potentially unanticipated results, such as car- to-car signaling, or where critical systems such as the utilities are involved. WW: What has Aeris done to address some of the challenges of speeding up IoT innovation? MJ: Awareness of these stumbling blocks led us to launch Neo last year that provides self-service IoT connec- tivity for companies. Neo has been specifically designed to eliminate many of the factors previously facing compa- nies that were looking to engage with the IoT. You can simply go to neo.aeris.com, create your free Aeris account and order your SIMs online in under five minutes. There's no volume commitment, and we don't lock you in a minimum term contract. You can ter- minate your service at any time. On top of that, there is extensive documentation with a robust online community for support. WW: How does Aeris help opera- tors bring IoT to enterprises around the world? MJ: To speed up and simplify IoT adop- tion and leverage our strengths in con- nectivity, device management and plat- forms, we found that a complementary relationship with Tech Mahindra.
