W i r e l e s s W o r l d T h u r s d a y, S e p t e m b e r 1 0 , 2 0 1 5 1 2 THE SERVICE REVOLUTION By Pardeep Kohli, President – Mobile Business Unit, Mitel In a connected world, we can't expect voice service to stay tied to a single device with a single phone number. Smart apps offer diversity that impacts our lives in a myriad of ways, from touch to non-touch, wearable to hearable, and personal devices to fixed appliances. Voice calls shouldn't be restricted to phone-to-phone calling with a finite beginning and end. Rigid usage margin- alizes their potential to be part of the lives of everyday user. Until now. The VoLTE ecosystem and accom- panying software networks provide oper- ators with a platform for change and opportunity, delivering access to technol- ogy that enables them to build services that address real-life needs. VoLTE pro- vides numerous technological and cost benefits, such as spectral efficiency, faster call setup times, HD voice and more. It also directs operators toward an all-IP network for delivery of their core services, which fundamentally changes the reachability of those services. IP technology enables operators to fully participate in the disaggregation of services and access them in the same way that Over-the-Top (OTT) apps like Skype, Viber and others pioneered Internet services. VoLTE is the catalyst for change for mobile operators, due to the all-IP nature of LTE and IMS core networking technologies. Operator deployment of VoLTE services will not only help improve the user experience, but also provide the means for operators to change their business model and inno- vate new services. With the VoLTE plat- form, mobile operators can turn voice service into a truly portable and seamless service across devices, networks, and geograph- ical boundaries. The software application model is relevant only if VoLTE is implemented as a platform that inherently uses suitable software design patterns to handle flexible call models, manage multiple endpoints and identities logic and support multi-modal enhance- ments. Having an end-to-end software net- work provides the necessary tools for oper- ators to incubate and host new solutions that lead to new revenue opportunities. With virtualization technologies as the basis for service deployment and operation, operators can innovate more rapidly, experiment more freely and ulti- mately succeed in less time with greater frequency. The goal will be to create net- work services that are both reliable and dynamic, and offer users the benefits of Internet technologies with the secu- rity and privacy of a trusted network operator. 2014 was a transformative year and several operators worldwide took the first steps toward VoLTE as their new service model. Since VoLTE is inherently an all-IP network, operators can move beyond delivering services to only those users connected to their network or roam- ing partner network. VoLTE is an inflec- tion point where Internet technology and telecommunications services come together to underpin a wide range of new operator services. We believe the right portfolio of services can drive operator networks of the future, become the cata- lyst for changing service delivery mod- els, and make core operator services, beginning with voice, truly portable. A UNIQUE PLATFORM FOR PROTOCOLS SIMULATION & TRAFFIC GENERATION As a long-standing telecom test equip- ment vendor, GL Communications Inc. realized the need for a unique platform that addresses long felt customers' need of a complete signaling and traffic sim- ulation and conformance testing and the result is the development of Message Automation & Protocol Simulation, MAPS™, with a unique architecture to support any protocol, interface, and traffic. The MAPS Wireless infrastructure protocols/elements support for 4G includes LTE, VoLTE and IMS. For 2G – supports GSM with BTS, BSC, MSC, SMSC, HLR/VLR emulation. For 3G – supports Node B, RNC, SGSN, GGSN are supported. For 4G – supports eNode B, MME, SGW, PDN GW, EIR, HSS, PCRF and CSCF are supported. For VoIP protocols/elements SIP, RTP, Megaco, MGCP, SIGTRAN, H.323 and many oth- ers are supported. TDM protocols for CAS, ISDN, SS7 and GSM provide lega- cy support. MAPS HD is an advanced network appliance used to simulate high volume calls with traffic. It is designed to easily achieve up to 20,000 endpoints per serv- er. Using a stack of multiple servers, a larger test system with 100K-200K calls is achievable for enterprise to carrier grade testing (hundreds of calls/sec) and high volume of sustained calls (tens of thousands of simultaneous calls/2U plat- form). MAPS tool covers solutions for both protocol simulation and protocol analy- sis. The application includes various test plans and test cases to support the testing of real-time entities. Along with automa- tion capability, the application gives users the unlimited ability to edit mes- sages and control scenarios (message sequences). "Message sequences" are generated through scripts. Verify your latest mobile features over the network with various types of traffic genera- tors and receivers. MAPS sup- ports transmission and detec- tion of various traffic types over IP (RTP, GTP), ATM, GSM (TRAU) and TDM – such as, digits, voice file, single tone, dual tones, fax, sms, email, http, ftp and video. MAPS also includes support for wide range of codec rates – visit www.gl.com/traffic-simulation.html and www.gl.com/voice-codecs.html for more details. In GPRS, packet data traffic can be generated and validated with GTP traffic modules. Circuit switched traffic can be generated and recorded using RTP core module. GL's MAPS is designed to work on TDM interfaces as well as on the IP/eth- ernet interfaces. TDM signaling proto- cols such as SS7, ISDN, MLPPP, CAS, MAP, CAP, GSM, INAP and BICC oper- ate over TDM networks, where as VoIP protocols SIP, SIP-I, MEGACO, MGCP, SIGTRAN, Diameter, INAP, MAP, CAP and BICC operate over IP transport layer. Typical applications of GL's MAPS include: a virtual real-time network in your lab simulating all the net- work elements using 'MAPS 2G 3G 4G Wireless Lab Suite'; SMS testing, from within the wireless infrastructure using MAPS; fault insertion, and erroneous call flows testing capability - test response of network against pro- tocol message modification, or corrup- tion; functional testing, regression testing and conformance testing of network ele- ments; performance testing, load testing, functional testing, regression testing and conformance testing of network ele- ments; inter-operability testing of net- works; wrap-around testing (WAT); ready scripts makes testing procedure simpler, less time consuming and hence time to market products; automated IVR testing – call establishment and traffic generation / detection process through scripts; monitoring IVR system for voice and data quality; voice feature testing application for next generation networks (NGNs); and complete emulation of a hybrid TDM/VoIP network - test signal- ing and media gateways.
