Consumer Electronics Daily News Thursday, January 5, 2017 8 ASHA POLL: PARENTS, TEENS WILLING TO LOWER VOLUME ON POPULAR TECH TO PROTECT HEARING Informing parents and teens of the risks popular technology overuse poses to hearing health prompts an overwhelm- ing willingness to listen more safely, according to an American Speech- Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) poll of parents and teens taken this past year. After reading a short informational statement about irreversible damage to hearing health caused by listening to tech devices at high volumes for too long, 73 percent of parents said they would now be more likely to set stronger tech-use guidelines for their children (ages 0-19). The same information led 75 percent of teens to say they would now be more likely to lower the volume on their devices. Ninety percent of parents said they would be more mindful of mod- eling safe listening by keeping the volume down when using personal tech devices themselves. Parents also said they would be more likely to purchase headphones, earphones or earbuds that limit the volume on any device they're attached to. ASHA's efforts to promote safe lis- tening are ongoing. Its Listen to Your Buds campaign has educated thousands of school-age children about the impor- tance of lowering the volume to pre- serve healthy hearing. A new, broader ASHA effort will educate the public about the impact of technology on human communication. CES attendees are invited to stop by the ASHA booth to learn more and perhaps help shape the development of the initiative by sharing their feedback and ideas and maybe even getting involved. For more information, stop by booth #44654 (Sands Expo) or go to www.asha.org. INNOVATIONS IN SHIPPING & PACKAGING For businesses, shipping efficiently and reliably at a reasonable cost can be a huge hurdle. The rise of e-commerce means consumers expect goods to arrive on their doorstep with greater speed and security than ever before. Meeting these rising shipping demands requires new solutions and technologies, and the U.S. Postal Service™ has committed itself to developing the solutions. The following are three ways in which the Postal Service is adapting to the shipping needs of its customers: Pricing That Enables America's E-Commerce No one delivers more e-commerce pack- ages than the U.S. Postal Service – and delivering value for each shipping dollar is always important. In 2016, two major shipping companies expanded their use of Dimensional (DIM) Weight pricing on domestic shipping, meaning lower weight packages can be billed at higher rate based on the size of box used. The Postal Service recognizes that when it comes to shipping, one size does not fit all. By reserving DIM weight pric- ing to very specific circumstances, the Postal Service has created shipping solu- tions that match costs to the products that are being shipped. By providing a range of efficient and economical domestic shipping services, the Postal Service is aiming to make shipping cheaper for businesses, without sacrificing any of the quality. A New Category of Box Shipping electronics has never been easy. Most packaging is ill-suited to house an individual device's dimen- sions and often requires customers to pre- wrap the product before placing it in the box. This is why the Postal Service developed its Precious Cargo Boxes, which are designed to help customers easily and safely transport high-priced electronics. Due to strategically placed bright blue polyethylene bumpers, these boxes can safely cushion smartphones, tablets or laptops simply by placing it in the box. Whether it's replacing a college student's iPhone or shipping new tablets to your workforce, this new category of box makes some of the most difficult items to ship seamless. E-Commerce Solutions As e-commerce continues to boom, retailers are constantly looking for new products and services that take advan- tage of informa- tion and tech- nology. That's why, as the country's leading deliverer of e-com- merce packages, the Postal Service is bringing new, simple solutions to the table. One example is "Scan, Weigh and Pay," a system that has helped retailers like eBay simplify shipping for their cus- tomers. By using the Postal Service's scanning, weighing and payment sys- tems, eBay customers are able to get flat rate shipping that was previously unavailable to them. This technology has streamlined the shipping process and grown the number of packages the Postal Service is delivering for eBay. Perhaps more importantly, it's allowed both eBay and its customers to save time and money. For more information, visit www.usps.com or stop by booth #31126. MAXIMIZING YOUR TRAVEL WITH XCOM GLOBAL Everyone's experienced the hunt for WiFi in coffee shops without spending a fortune on a cup of coffee that you don't crave. In some cases you find a connec- tion, only to find out that it would cost you a fortune. Staying connected for an affordable price is not as easy as it seems when you are abroad, but we live in an era where we need to be connected. We pull up our smartphone and find reviews for restau- rants that we have never been to, check for the fastest route to your destination, post pictures on social media and use apps to get discounts on a daily basis. To do all of these tasks when you are abroad for an affordable price, the perfect solu- tion will be renting an XCom Global hotspot. Here are a few ways a hotspot can maximize your trip. Saving Time Finding a restaurant to eat or finding directions to an event that you are going to can take double the time if you do not have a connection. Though it may be a great experience to get lost in a city that you have never been to, time is of the essence. You do not have a second to waste during your trip. In a similar vein, hotel WiFi hotspots can be slow and time-consuming. Take a WiFi hotspot and plan out your trip with the best offers you can find. Saving Money We all were exposed to the cautionary tale of bill shock. You use your phone without worrying about the overages and roaming fee, and you come home to a massive bill without being aware! Avoid bill shock with XCom Global. It provides unlimited data for a flat daily fee. You would be worry- free and connected in over 175 countries and territories! Safety Traveling can be scary at times. You are in an unfamiliar place with differ- ent languages, people and culture. With a WiFi hotspot, you can avoid unsafe situations. Firstly, you can avoid unsafe streets and public transportation with a quick search. Secondly, you will have a medium of communication just in case you need to talk to somebody. Lastly, you can avoid unsafe WiFi connections. In tourist spots, many hackers set up "free" WiFi and steal personal informa- tion. The XCom Global WiFi hotspot pro- vides a unique SSID and a password for a safe and secure connection. For more information, go to www .xcomglobal.com, call 858.222.8242 or email info@xcomglobal.com.
