C o n s t r u c t i o n M a r k e t p l a c e 6 5 T h u r s d a y, J a n u a r y 2 2 , 2 0 1 5 Director of National Accounts for Goodman Manufacturing. "Our product and program features not only help improve cost efficiencies, but they help builders meet their own marketing needs when it comes to energy efficiency rat- ings and desirable features." In keeping with new regional energy efficiency standards, Goodman has recently introduced a number of products builders can utilize to increase overall HERS scores (www.resnet.us/hers- index). New high efficiency 97 percent AFUE furnaces are both smaller and easy to install. A broad line of high quality condensing units delivers a range of cool- ing efficiencies to help manage regional and local code requirements. Control and IAQ options present the kind of whole- house technology features that many con- sumers want. All are wins for the builder. The Goodman National Accounts Program incorporates incentive rebates that include system options and upgrades like humidification, fresh air systems, controls and ductwork. Maintaining watch over incentive programs offered by the federal government and regional utilities, such as Energy Star (www.ener- gystar.gov), Goodman constantly moni- tors for potential application or product changes that may help regional or local builders sell more efficient systems to their homebuyers. Plus, when builders select Goodman, their contractors can take a free training program to help ensure high performance levels and over- all installation quality. Builders also benefit from Goodman's product distribution system. With more Goodman (Cont'd. from p. 1) than a thousand outlets across the country and carefully managed inventories, it can respond quickly with almost any product. "Getting the products you need when you need them is important to running a great builder program. Builders need to know that when they choose Goodman, their schedules won't be scuttled due to unavail- able product," said Franks. High consumer interest in whole- house technology means builders need a supplier that can provide those features, as well as a good upsell path. As part of Daikin Industries Ltd., Goodman has access to the resources to pursue product development and emerging technology. Case in point is the recent integration with Nest's thermostat and security tech- nologies. Goodman even trains builders on how to best present the value of these upgrades to potential homebuyers. "Since the company's founding more than 30 years ago, Goodman has supported home builders through many industry changes. Today, the Goodman brand offers a full line of energy-efficient heating and cool- ing systems that deliver outstanding comfort and value to homebuilders and homeowners alike. The long-term commitment Goodman has made to the new construction segment of the HVAC market is not common in the industry. Just as in the past, Goodman will continue to build enduring relationships with home builders in the years to come for the mutual benefit of all," stated Gary Clark, SVP, Goodman Manufacturing Company. Because the new second floor bath- room was so far from the water heater, the Kaisers asked Mike Casey, of KC Plumbing & Heating, to address the need for hot water recirculation in the home. Being environmentally conscious, the Kaiser's wanted Casey's help to meet (or, preferably, exceed) the state's stringent "stretch building codes" – some of the nation's most demanding energy efficien- cy requirements. Casey installed a dedicated return line to the plumbing piping and chose Taco's SmartPlus hot water recirculation pump. "This single, inexpensive improvement brought the most noticeable enhancement to our quality of life in the home," said a more-than-satisfied Lincoln Kaiser. "I now have the convenience of instant hot water at my shower every morning." Of five different Taco options to accomplish hot water recirculation, Casey chose SmartPlus because he could easily install a dedicated return line dur- ing construction. Had that not been the case, there are also two Taco products that can be retrofitted into any existing plumbing, without adding a dedicated return line. "The advantages of hot water recirc are many," said Casey. "Of course, it eliminates the wait time for hot water at showers and taps. It also saves energy. But – a surprise to many – it saves an average of 12,000 gallons a year by elim- inating water that that goes down the drain as people [in homes without the technology] wait for hot water." Many homeowners not only pay for the town water, pay to heat it up, but also pay for it to go down the drain. Electrical consumption is also reduced by up to 94 percent when compared to traditional continuously-run domestic hot water recirculation pumps. The Smart Plus "learns" the family's Taco (Cont'd. from p. 1) water use patterns and keeps hot water at the tap for use at a moment's notice, when it's needed. The SmartPlus is fully automatic and never needs programming. In neighboring Rhode Island, one of the largest independently-owned oil com- panies in New England, Santoro Oil, was working on a retrofit job at about the same time. "We do everything we can to be sure that we can shrink energy expenses while providing greater comfort and safety for homeowners," said Service Manager George Fantacone. Once Santoro technicians replaced an old boiler for a new high efficiency one, they turned their attention to the home's domestic hot water distribution. A 40-gallon indirect tank was left in serv- ice, but its hot water output was signifi- cantly improved with the addition of a three-quarter-inch Taco 5000 Series mix- ing valve. "We install Taco mixing valves on all our indirect tanks, standard water heaters or where a point-of-use valve is required by code," said Fantacone. "It's a safe, simple way to temper water down for any reason. We install hundreds every year and haven't had an issue with a single valve." By maintaining 140 degrees Fahrenheit tank temperature, Santoro tech- nicians eliminate the threat of legionella bacteria, and increase the thermal capacity of the tank by up to 50 percent. That means the existing 40 gallon tank, with a Taco mixing valve, now has a useful water vol- ume equivalent of a 60 gallon tank without a mixing valve. Despite the high tank tem- peratures, the mixing valve – set at 120 degrees Fahrenheit – eliminates the risk of scalding. "We use Taco products for every application possible," concluded Fantacone. "They're our number one go- to manufacturer." For more information, go to www.taco- hvac.com or stop by booth #C6251. BD: There are several things in common. First, all product lines are eco-friendly. Day-lighting through skylights reduces utility bills by reducing the need for arti- ficial lighting, and the resulting increased air conditioning required to offset the heat from incandescent bulbs. Second, our solar powered attic fans require no power from the grid. They help reduce A/C loads and run times, and they help preserve roof underlayment and shingles. Third, when you consider a home hearth flue or an industrial chimney – if it's not heating efficiently or venting properly – that's an energy loss and potentially a health haz- ard. That's where our chimney products fit into the mix in an eco-friendly way. CM: What distinguishes you from your competitors? BD: I believe we offer high-quality prod- ucts, made in America, which offer the best value. You can find cheaper products on the market, but they won't be made with our industrial grade extruded alu- minum, condensation release domes, easy-release hinges, etc. You can certain- Natural Light Energy Systems (Cont'd. from p. 4) ly find higher priced products, but why would you pay more than you need to? CM: Who are your targeted customers/end users? BD: Our end users are homeowners and business owners who need low-cost effi- cient day-lighting solutions. Because we are essentially a manufacturer, we don't sell direct to consumers. Instead, we work with distributors and dealers, both domestically and abroad, to provide product for professional tradespeople, general contractors and architects. CM: To what do you attribute Natural Light Energy Systems' success? BD: Our products are a great value for the price. Our customer service is excel- lent, and we've had many first-time buy- ers become repeat customers. We have a very loyal customer base for which we are very grateful.
