However, fewer professionals are aware of the availability of a timber-based cur- tain wall system, such as the one offered by Pacific Architectural Millwork. Similar to its metal counterparts, the timber curtain wall is a compression- glazed system that sandwiches the glass between an exterior cap and the interior structural mullions. The difference is that the interior mullions are constructed out of solid wood, which gives a much rich- er, natural appearance. The wood mul- lions are engineered based on the project, increasing in depth to withstand the structural and wind loads. However, the face dimension remains a slender 2-3/16" (56mm) wide, or as narrow as 1-3/4" (50mm) wide for residential ("lite") applications. The exterior is covered by a beauty cap of either wood or low-mainte- nance aluminum. With the wood interior, architects now have the option of creating a warmer look with their curtain wall compared to alu- minum or steel, and they can customize the interior in ways that are difficult or impos- sible to achieve in metal. For example, the horizontal or vertical timber pieces can be shaped or rounded, unlike the typically rectangular metallic shapes, and they can be extended to create shelves, fins, coun- ters or other millwork components. Timber curtain walls can span multiple stories by attaching to the building structure between floors, and they can be designed in an infi- nite array of configurations, including seg- mented radiuses, positive or negative Pacific Architectural (Cont'd. from p. 1) slopes and custom shapes. With criteria for energy performance always increasing, the thermal properties of wood make the timber curtain wall an attractive choice. As a natural insulator, the wood helps keep the interior environ- ment comfortable, even in extreme cold or hot climates. Pacific has had their tim- ber curtain wall system tested and rated at the highest levels for thermal, air, water and structural performance. Pacific recently completed the installation of its timber curtain wall at the J. Craig Venter Institute in La Jolla, Calif., which is the world's first net-zero research laboratory. Nearly the entire exterior envelope of the multi-story facil- ity consists of curtain wall, with FSC- certified Spanish cedar interior wood mullions and exterior wood caps. This facility achieved LEED-Platinum status, thanks in part to the natural light and ven- tilation from the timber curtain wall, designed by ZGF Architects and manu- factured by Pacific Architectural Millwork, using German RAICO gaskets and hardware. All of this performance and beauty comes at a premium, however – expect to pay significantly more for a timber cur- tain wall, compared to a standard alu- minum one. But for the discerning archi- tect or client who demands the best and doesn't want to be limited by material or design, the timber curtain wall is the ulti- mate solution. PS: New Internet domains were developed to enhance competition and consumer choice by alleviating scarcity in legacy Internet domains like .COM and .NET. For builders and anyone else who runs a busi- ness, this opens up exciting new opportuni- ties for online branding and recognition. Now, rather than trying to sign up for PaulStahuraConstruction.COM and hoping it's available – always a question with more than 100 million .COM names already reg- istered – I can hop online and register Stahura.CONSTRUCTION in a few min- utes. We see this as a revolution for busi- nesses, particularly those that aren't old enough or large enough to have one of the very few prime .COM addresses. CM: Will people actually be able to find a business using a new Internet domain address? PS: Absolutely. More than a decade of development has gone into ensuring that new Internet domains function exactly the same as those that you're already familiar with. In fact, some early studies have sug- gested that new domain addresses are actu- ally easier to find using search engines, because they are shorter and more key- word rich than similar .COM names. CM: How do users sign up for an address with a new Internet domain? Is it expensive? Donuts (Cont'd. from p. 1) PS: Virtually every reputable domain name retailer (or "registrar") now offers new Internet domain addresses along- side legacy addresses like .COM and .NET. Registrars like GoDaddy have embraced new domains and are offering exciting promotions. New domain prices are extremely competitive. You may pay a little more for a generic name like Best.PLUMBING, but far, far less than you would pay for a similar .COM name. For a full list of accredited regis- trars, visit www.donuts.co/registrars/ donuts-registrars. CM: What sort of domains are available for builders? PS: We've already mentioned .CON- STRUCTION, .CONTRACTOR and .PLUMBING, but there are several more names that are directly applicable to builders. Domains like .KITCHEN, .REPAIR, .GLASS and of course, .BUILDERS, give builders an exciting range of new ways to establish and enhance their online brands. CM: Anything else our readers should know? PS: We are deeply gratified to be part of the International Builders Show, and to have the opportunity to help builders establish targeted, relevant online identi- ties that work for their businesses. With the resulting moisture mitigation, these barriers ultimately help to protect Maxxon (Cont'd. from p. 1) your finished floor goods from failures due to moisture vapor. We are also debuting our partnership with Thermal- Chem Corporation and will have a sam- ple of our new underlayment/epoxy fin- ished floor system. CM: What makes your company unique?
