"Diabetes in a three-year-old is real- ly hard. She couldn't tell us how she was feeling and we never knew what her blood sugar was," said mother Hallie Addington, a kindergarten teacher from Springboro, Ohio. Avery, now eight, is one of 15,000 children diagnosed each year with type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease in which the pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone necessary to convert food into energy, according to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The chronic condition requires diligence in maintaining a targeted blood glucose range. Allowing glucose levels to go too high or too low could pose serious life- t h r e a t e n i n g c o n s e - quences. To help keep their d a u g h t e r h e a l t h y , Avery's par- ents turned to Dexcom's G4 PLAT- INUM ® continuous glucose monitor- ing (CGM) system, a breakthrough device that provides dynamic informa- tion on glucose levels to children as young as two years old. The Smart Valve is the first of its kind to link to water leak detectors and temperature sensors to automatically shut off the water supply if there is a leak detected or the temperature is too low, which may cause a pipe to freeze when homeowners are away. "Many of our customers have expe- rienced serious flood damage from burst pipes and leaks," said Kevin Meagher, Lowe's Vice President and General Manager, Smart Home. "The Smart Valve offers a new level of protection for their homes and gives them the peace of mind to know that if anything happens they will be alerted and damage can be minimized." Water damage and freezing account for 22 percent of all home- owner insurance claims, with the aver- age cost exceeding $7,000, according to the 2014 Insurance Fact Book from the I n s u r a n c e I n f o r m a t i o n I n s t i t u t e . Insurance companies, like Liberty Mutual Insurance, are offering signifi- cant annual discounts to its customers who take the extra step in adopting technologies that keep their home safe. The Smart Valve is available in Lowe's stores nationwide and online at www.lowes.com for $159 and joins more than 50 existing devices currently available for Iris – including security sensors, smoke detectors, video, water Continued on Page 81 Continued on Page 81 Lee M.
