Core to this step change in performance is our own professional video chip. This programmable chip gives us the performance and the control necessary to develop and implement the algorithms required to achieve the highest bandwidth efficiency across all delivery networks. BSD: What are the market drivers behind this new platform? GW: Consumers consumption habits are changing: they value high-quality and convenience. And with more content available to more video-enabled devices than ever before, maximizing video delivery over available bandwidth and multiple networks is vital to the success of current and future consumer TV experiences. More than ever before, velocity and agility are vital for operators looking Dolby Laboratories (Con't. from p. 1) networks, and partners with device manufacturers to optimize its TVs, tablets, smartphones, and PCs for great sound. At NAB 2013, Dolby will showcase its partnerships with some of the industry's leading players and the solutions it has developed for broadcast and over-the-top work flows. Dolby audio technologies, including Dolby Digital Plus, are supported by more professional solutions vendors than any other audio technology across all work flows with more than 500 professional tools for content encoding and distribution in Dolby formats. Dolby makes it easy for partners to quickly deploy Dolby's best-in-class technologies in its products. Dolby's licensing kits and hardware and softZippy (Con't. from p. 1) applications. We have seen it all from to deploy new services; there is increased competitiveness in the market in highquality multi-screen service provision and operators need to keep pace. Additionally, they need to deploy these new services within the constraints of bandwidth and legacy networks. BSD: What's unique about this solution? GW: Built on Ericsson's own technology, the AVP 4000 ensures operators can remain innovative and responsive by leveraging leading technology and a professional relationship. It offers the highest performance and broadest capability in the industry on a single platform across all applications, from SD to HD, 1080p50/60 and Ultra High Definition TV (UHDTV), and all codecs MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC and JPEG2000, 4:2:0 and 4:2:2, 8-bit and 10bit. tomers see? GW: With the need to balance consumer demand for new services and costly upgrades of existing delivery infrastructures, our customers will benefit from the highest performance available to maximize the efficiency of any current and new platform. By addressing all applications, codecs, resolutions and profiles in a single platform, the Ericsson AVP 4000 eases integration, expansion, repurposing, training, repair and upgrades, considerably lowering the overall cost of ownership. BSD: What relevance will compression play in the future in delivering TV services to the home? 63 compression is important to Ericsson. This is why we made a large investment in the knowledge that real-time video performance in networks is crucial to their efficiency. BSD: This is the latest in a long line of innovative compression launches from the Ericsson team. How far back does the company's heritage in this field go? GW: We have a history of pioneering video compression that goes back more than 20 years. The compression team has been instrumental in developments that helped trigger the transformation of the TV landscape and has been recognized with multiple Emmy® awards―including one in 2008 for pioneering development and deployment of MPEG-4 AVC systems for high-definition television. BSD: What end benefits will your cus- GW: Video is exploding on networks of all types. 90 percent of IP traffic on all networks types will be video by 2015. As such, real-time video processing and ware solutions cover all platforms and product form factors. Finally, Dolby also offers a suite of reference products to bootstrap the adoption of its new technologies and enable the industry to test, benchmark and validate new products incorporating Dolby technology in workflows. Dolby will also present two updates to Dolby products to accelerate the deployment of Dolby audio technology: the CAT1100 OEM module and the DP580 Professional Reference Decoder. The CAT1100 OEM module enables professional solutions vendors to rapidly incorporate comprehensive support for decoding and monitoring of Dolby audio formats throughout the broadcast chain, including Dolby Digital Plus™, Dolby Digital, and Dolby E. It's the first OEM mod- ule from Dolby with support for advanced Dolby Digital Plus decoding features, such as 7.1-channel surround sound for premium services and Dolby's surround descriptive audio to improve support for the visually impaired. The CAT 1100 module also offers on-board loudness measurement, including the capability to assess the accuracy of incoming loudness metadata (dial norm). It measures loudness according to major international standards, including BS.1770-2, ATSC A/85, and EBU R128. It also includes Dolby's Dialogue Intelligence™ algorithm which increases the effectiveness of loudness measurement, as suggested by key content delivery specifications and the ATSC A/85 recommendation. The Dolby DP580 Professional Reference Decoder is the latest in the Dolby family of professional broadcast products that supports Dolby codecs. It is the first reference decoder for Dolby TrueHD and serves all Dolby audio codecs, including Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus™, HE-AAC with metadata, Dolby E, and Dolby Pro Logic® II technologies. The DP580 helps broadcasters monitor streams along multiple points of the broadcast chain and provides a detailed analysis of Dolby audio streams for professionals, making it ideal for broadcast trials and manufacturers' test environments. provide lead time and doc. dates in most cases within 24 hours.
