Monday, April 8, 2013 Broadcasters Show Daily RAIDUNDANT'S SKY SOLUTIONS EARN THE LEAD ROLE IN SONY'S HIGH TECH CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE IN 4K RESOLUTION In order to better serve movie theaters upgrading to 4k technology, Sony Digital Media Systems Group needed an easy-to-manage and expandable storage solution to support the CHIPS (Central Hub for Integrated Program Storage) offering. As more theaters throughout the country upgrade to 4k projection technology, many find that they lack the skills to operate, manage and repair these solutions leaving Sony with an expensive, personnel intensive challenge that was quickly losing profitability. Sony was in search for a data storage solution that offered a minimum of 20TB of available storage in each Cinema location and a system that could expand with ease, replacing its older and more expensive storage systems that were proving to be difficult for clients to manage. As more films require high-end HD digital projection, more theaters have upgraded their projection systems to support the latest in animation, 3D technology and IMAX quality cinematic experiences for their audiences. Sony Media Systems Group has helped hundreds of theaters across the country transform their movie theaters into dynamic digital Cineplex's managing films and advertisements for multiple screens and televisions throughout the building from a single, secure system. GLOBAL BROADCASTERS USE LIVEU'S HANDHELD LU40-SBY FOR LIVE NEWSGATHERING, EVENT COVERAGE LiveU, a leader in portable live videoover-cellular solutions, will demonstrate its compact, lightweight LU40-S uplink device at NAB 2013 in booth SU5511. Since its 2012 launch, the LU40-S has been used by global broadcasters to transmit live video of breaking news and high-profile events, including the 2012 U.S. Presidential Election and Hurricane Sandy. It was also used by the LiveU team to stream live video during an eightday trekking expedition to Mt. Kilimanjaro, the first time that bonded uplink technology was used in such an extreme environment. The LU40-S device incorporates LiveU's proprietary internal antenna for additional resiliency in areas of poor cellular coverage and offers rich new features and capabilities for live newsgath- ering. These include: low latency for interview-mode; local storage store and forward; file transfer (FTP); video and audio indicators; under one minute bootup time; and the ability to control the unit from its touch screen, the server or from any web enabled device. LiveU's proprietary internal antenna provides stronger connectivity. The antennas and modems support a large number of cellular and Wi-Fi frequencies including 4G LTE, ensuring enhanced signal performance with long-range reception and increased uplink capability. Greg DeBrosse, Assistant News Director, ABC57, said, "We're using the LU40 every day as a live station. Our reporters take it out in the field and go live from it. For example, covering a The data store within CHIPS supports films for more than 200 theaters, hours of advertisements and theater information that can add up to more than 20TB of data in each location. CHIPS is designed to store, manage and move this data quickly and securely so that each theater has 24/7 access to the films and advertisement they need. The solution was to provide Sony with Raidundant's Sky Solutions featuring the patented X-Array Technology, allowing users to easily remove, transfer, store and expand large data sources. The easy-to-use storage system from Raidundant delivered the expandable and flexible storage system that Sony was looking for while maintaining the highest levels of cost savings. The benefits that Sony noticed right way included, reduced hardware cost, increased ROI on CHIPS solution, increased ease of use, automation of daily tasks, simpler, and faster data recovery. recent march, one of them went live at the start at six and then moved to the end for seven. In the live truck world, that would have taken two trucks." DeBrosse continued, "The best part for me is that my staff loves it. Everyone wants to use it because of its simplicity. It's set to be the ultimate breaking news tool, especially in cities and other areas with strong cell coverage." The LU40-S can also be connected to LiveU's Xtender external antenna to provide increased network reception for extreme scenarios, such as heavily crowded locations. With built-in support for the remote external antenna, the LU40-S handheld device can support up to 13 network connections. Samuel Wasserman, LiveU's CEO, said, "We're continuing to drive technological innovation in the cellular transmis- 21 Raidundant's Sky Solutions serve as the heart of the CHIPS configuration delivering data at 10GbE speeds and running RAID 6 + Hot spare for insurance against failover and data corruption.
