Construction Marketplace Tuesday, January 9, 2018 4 Acoustiblok Award-Winning Soundproofing Material By Lahnie Johnson, President & Founder, Acoustiblok Revolutionary Acoustiblok ® material was developed by Acoustiblok, Inc. in Tampa, Florida over 20 years ago to combat the growing problem of noise in the building and construction industry. This innovative product won top honors in the British House of Commons for noise abatement and was featured on National Geographic TV worldwide for its contributions towards ending noise pollution. UL/ULC classified for over 400 dif- ferent floor, wall and ceiling assemblies, Acoustiblok material is truly a unique soundproofing material. While other materials attempt to "block" or "absorb" sound, Acoustiblok does neither. As the heavy limp Acoustiblok material vibrates from the sound, it actually transforms the acoustical energy into inaudible internal friction energy in a process sometimes referred to as "isothermal adiabatic." Just one thin 1/8 inch layer of Acoustiblok in a standard stud wall can reduce more sound than 8 inches of poured c o n c r e t e . Acoustiblok is consid- ered green and is lead, barium and a s b e s t o s free. It has the same STC of lead (STC 52) but without the high cost and envi- ronmental problems. It's also 100 percent recyclable. Acoustiblok can be installed on studs before attaching drywall to reduce noise between rooms, over floor joists before the subfloor is attached to reduce the sound from walking (impact noise) as The Evolving World of Residential Elevators By Bruce Ramsay, Marketing Manager, Garaventa Lift Garaventa Lift is a member of the Leading Suppliers Council of the NAHB and a global manufacturer of residential elevators, LULA elevators and wheel- chair lifts. There was a time, not so long ago, when the thought of using a private ele- vator installed in one's home was consid- ered extremely extravagant. However, most people who installed elevators in their homes did so due to a specific need, and as a result, residential elevators were typically practical, utilitarian devices. Basic residential elevator products are still available today. The cab entrances are protected by a standard swinging passage door at each floor. Electric interlocks, which are fitted to the door frames, ensure that the doors can't be opened if the cab is not present at that floor. Also, an accordion style gate is typ- ically fixed to the elevator cab itself, pro- tecting passengers during travel. So what has changed? Clearly, the market for residential elevators has grown substantially. It is now commonplace for new custom homes to include an elevator. Some of these homes would be considered high- end or luxury. However, there are an increasing num- ber of elevators being included in more modest homes as well. There is a whole segment of the builder community creating homes and communities for the "55+" age demo- graphic, a fast-growing market including baby boomers. Universal designs are typ- ical. The homes are designed to be acces- sible for everyone, regardless of size, strength, age or physical ability.
