Construction Marketplace 2 3 Wednesday, January 10, 2018 Los Angeles to Expand ICC Evaluation Service Provider Status In a progressive move to further enhance the service it provides to the public, the City of Los Angeles Department of Building Safety (LADBS) is working to recognize ICC Evaluation Service Reports (ESRs) as proof of compliance to the seismic requirements of the California and City of Los Angeles building codes. LADBS has been accepting ICC-ES reports in all other categories for many years. This initiative began in April 2017 as a pilot program, with plans to officially imple- ment later this year. Prior to the effective date, voluntary pilot programs were instituted in order to ensure a smooth transition to the use of ICC-ES ESRs. "With 70 years of product evaluation experience, ICC-ES looks forward to the opportunity to work closer with LADBS and provide full-service evaluations to manufacturers looking to distribute their products in the City of Los Angeles," said ICC-ES President Shahin Moinian, P.E. "While ICC-ES has been evaluating products in a number of categories, the latest expansion of the program now allows us to service all categories of building products, including seismic, to help ensure the safety of those who work, live and play in the City." LADBS chose to accept ICC-ES reports in order to provide manufactur- ers, builders and code compliance profes- sionals with an easier and more stream- lined option beyond what is currently available. Providing this option will improve product approval and increase efficiency resulting in more options and the greater potential for economic growth in the region. Beginning in January, clients of LADBS can continue to work with the City to obtain seismic research reports or they will be able to choose ICC-ES as an alternative for LADBS-compliant seis- mic evaluation reports for their building products. To learn more and get the latest updates on this change, or to find out how to obtain an ICC-ES ESR, contact Michael Temesvary, P.E., at 800.423.6587, ext. 3877 or email mtemesvary@icc-es.org. Polar Shield Thermal Break Iron Doors Wrought iron doors are beautiful, presti- gious and offer the ultimate security. The downside is that iron doors have just about the worst thermal performance possible. Iron is such a good conductor of heat that energy just flows right through. When cold steel meets with the humidity and warmth inside a home, it forms a glaze of condensation on the inside of the door. In freezing weather, it can often form a layer of frost on the door! Iron door manufacturers put polyurethane foam inside the door cavi- ties, but this does very little to help. The heat simply travels around the steel struc- ture, bypassing the foam insulation. This is why wrought iron doors have been mostly restricted to Southern and warmer coastal regions of the U.S. – and almost never found in the Northern parts of the U.S. or Canada. The only way to stop the flow of heat is to literally "break" the thermal connection between inside and outside. That is easier said than done, which is why it has taken some very innovative development to solve the problem – resulting in two U.S. patents and one patent pending. Patented Polar Shield™ technology has revolutionized the iron door industry by improving insulation by over 1,000 percent. This means that homeowners in all climate regions can now enjoy the sta- tus and beauty of wrought iron doors, without sacrificing energy efficiency – and without suffering through each win- ter. How It Works Heat always flows from a hotter to a colder area. In cold weather, heat will flow through a standard iron door from inside your home to the outside. In hot weather the heat pours in, making your air conditioning have to work overtime. The greater the temperature difference between inside and outside, the more heat transfer occurs. With a standard wrought iron door, vast amounts of heat will pour out your door because iron is an excellent heat con- ductor. Conduction accounts for 90 percent of heat loss through iron doors. To con- trol this requires a completely different door construction which provides a "ther- mal break" – essentially an insulating barrier between the inner and outer door surfaces. This is the heart of Polar Shield technology. Polar Shield has even more to offer. The sepa- rately opening windows in its doors have dual seals – plus a thermal liner inside the window frame itself. All windows, sidelights and transoms are triple layer glass with two separate argon filled cavities. The threshold design includes a triple vane bottom sweep with integral drip bead – plus a base seal and corner seals to prevent air infiltration. High tech Armacell ® foam is layered inside each door slab to ensure 100 percent control of convective and radiant heat loss. Double doors come with a unique double astragal so that it can include a second kerf seal to control air infiltration between the doors.
