C o n s u m e r E l e c t r o n i c s D a i l y N e w s T h u r s d a y, J a n u a r y 7 , 2 0 1 6 1 8 DIABETES MANAGEMENT: DEXCOM SHOWING BIG DATA MAY BE THE ANSWER With Dexcom G5™ Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system, Dexcom brings the first and only FDA- approved CGM that directly transmits data via an app to your compatible smart device. Now users can discreetly see their glucose readings every five min- utes, glucose trend and direction (Dexcom G5 Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring System, User's Guide, 2015), allowing for more informed diabetes management deci- sions. While Dexcom is leading the CGM category, it's not planning on stopping there. It is also managing the data to help those with diabetes. "Data is only useful when it is actionable. We are investing in being the leaders of data curation and ways to use that data for the greater good," said Jorge Valdes, Dexcom Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. "By capturing the data and having the best minds in the business do the analy- sis, we can further improve the overall patient experience." Annika Jimenez, Senior Vice President of Data at Dexcom agrees. "We are focusing on facilitating a richer set of insights," explained Jimenez. "By ana- lyzing Dexcom's data alongside data from pump manufacturers, pen manufac- turers and other behavioral data-rich apps, we will drive new insights-powered functionality to our patient communi- ties." "We are also using this data to create an Ecosystem," explained Valdes. "The Ecosystem is a suite of tools – some cre- ated by Dexcom and others by collabora- tors – which will add value and utility of the CGM data to improve patient outcomes and dia- betes management." "The next generation data platform will bring in machine learning capabili- ties – moving towards a big data approach to power dis- covery," explained Jimenez. "We will find the right way to bring that to the patient community through our products or the Ecosystem." "The new software launch of Dexcom CLARITY™ also helps us see how we can bring insights to our patients and physicians," said Valdes. Dexcom is actively fostering innovative relation- ships with other prominent members of the diabetes community. By partnering with health tech companies, it gives more control to users to manage their diabetes with the information they're comfortable sharing. "By increasing the interoperability between medical devices, software and mobile platforms, it could mean improv- ing the user's experience and lifestyle goals," said Valdes. "With our new col- laborators, like Google, this is only the beginning of a totally new era in dia- betes management." With all of the con- cerns with patient priva- cy, HIPAA and data breaches, Dexcom is tak- ing an aggressive approach to protecting user data while still allowing their users access to their own data. "Patient privacy and data security has been and continues to be a top priority," said Jimenez. "We will continue to insist on not just being com- pliant, but putting patient privacy front and center. We want to support our patients' desires to access their personal data as much as we would an enterprise that wants to build new solutions. Dexcom puts patients first and this will continue to be the case as we build the Dexcom data platform." TELEWORK: ACCOMMODATION OPENS NEW DOORS TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES Today's news of telework tends to focus on workers and managers who have choices about exactly where and when they can get to an office. But companies overlook a potentially valuable source of labor – people with disabilities – who can use new technologies to communicate, attend meetings and interact within office settings. While people with disabilities may find their conditions restrict their physical movement, technologies can connect them to professional settings, freeing them to contribute. Technology's Role in Advancing the ADA The Americans with Disabilities Act became law in 1990 to grant people with disabilities "the same opportuni- ties as everyone else to participate in mainstream American life – to enjoy employment opportunities, to purchase goods and services and to participate in State and local government programs and services." This year marks the ADA's 25th anniversary, an occasion that included an event at The White House in July 2015. Even as the ADA requires employers to make reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities to work effectively, many people with severe physical limitations cannot enjoy the ful- fillment that work provides. What if tech- nology could push those boundaries even further, to open up even more possibili- ties? Seeing and Hearing Henry as an Equal Henry Evans of Los Altos, California, is a Stanford MBA with experience work- ing at Silicon Valley tech companies until a stroke- like event struck him at 40 years old. Henry is now mute, quadriplegic, and is cared for by his family at home. He often explains that, for an important percentage of the disabled population, leaving home and traveling (even to an ADA compliant building) is often unsafe, inconvenient or impossible. In his TEDx talk, which Henry presented using a Beam Smart Presence System from Suitable Technologies, he describes his elation to feel equal with his friends once again: "The primary reason Beam Smart Presence is so important for disabled people is that, if you can speak, no one has to know you are disabled and they don't have a chance to treat you differently (even subconscious- ly). These devices, which show only your head, create for the first time a truly level playing field for people with physical disabili- ties." Henry hopes the technolo- gies that enable telework, like Beam, gives employers addition- al tools to maximize the produc- tivity of a person with a disability – as well as the incentive to find tasks suitable for those individuals. In Henry's view, this can only encourage employers to proactively target people with disabili- ties for employment. Beam combines user-controlled mobility with telepresence for team- mates, guests, family and friends who wish to interact from afar. Beam+ is now available for $1,995. BIZLINK LAUNCHES COMPLETE USB-C PORTFOLIO USB-C is set to become the new standard of data transmission and power delivery in the near future, combining countless inter- faces, signals, tasks and forms into one single sleek connector. But before USB-C can supplant the plethora of other connec- tors and interfaces, there must first be a transitional period. This is where BizLink steps in as a premiere solutions provider for your interconnectivity problems. USB-C USB Type-C Specification 1.0 defines a smaller reversible-plug USB connector that interfaces with both hosts and devices, replacing USB Type-B and Type-A connectors and cables with a scalable standard. Its two most notable features are the Alternate Mode and Power Delivery functions. Alternate Mode allows for the USB-C connector to transmit previously separate interfaces such as DisplayPort, MHL, HDMI, PCI Express and Base-T Ethernet. The Power Delivery function enables the connector and the cable to serve as a charger for devices ranging from mobile phones up to laptops. BizLink's USB-C Portfolio and Focus BizLink is at the forefront of intercon- nectivity and is an indisputable world leader in USB-C manufacturing. As a total interconnect solutions provider, BizLink has a complete USB-C product line ranging from connectors (both board-mount receptacle and wire-mount plug), various cable assemblies, various video and data dongles, and hubs and docking stations. These solutions are able to meet every Type-C interconnect requirement across the board – from lap- top, tablet to smartphone. Recently BizLink has been focusing on bringing USB-C Docking Stations to market and developing assemblies capable of high-speed interfaces for mass data trans- mission within data centers. Docking sta- tions are a one-stop solution to all signal conversion woes and are a centerpiece within the portfolio. In terms of high- speed interfaces, BizLink has developed and manufactures several kinds of cables: SAS/miniSAS, SFP/QSFP, SFF8639 and OCulink. About BizLink Technology Founded in 1996 and public since 2011, BizLink Technology was created with the goal of becoming the leading global supplier of interconnect solutions.
