R e s t a u r a n t D a i l y N e w s F r i d a y, M a y 1 5 , 2 0 1 5 4 WHY THE APP STORE IS YOUR BEST BET FOR APPLICANTS Seven out of 10 restaurants plan to hire more part-time workers than full-time this year. With hiring – and hiring com- petition – increasing, more and more restaurants are turning to mobile to give them the recruiting edge. And for good reason. More than one billion job searches are performed each month on mobile devices alone. Three out of five job seek- ers have looked for a job from their phones, and 30 percent are looking more than once every day. If your careers page and job applications aren't mobile- friendly, you're missing out on a lot of high-quality applicants. And with three out of five restau- rants not satisfied with the quality of applicants they receive and even more not seeing the number of applicants they need, adopting a mobile recruiting and hiring strategy is crucial to restaurants staying competitive. Foodservice opera- tors report the most difficulty recruiting high-quality candidates – as compared to other service-industry sectors, including retail, hospitality and convenience stores – with 92 percent saying they don't find recruiting high- quality candi- dates easy. More than half realize the value in mobile, agreeing that offering a more mobile hir- ing experience would improve their recruiting efforts, yet only one in five employers has optimized its career site for mobile and even fewer have opti- mized their job postings. The stakes are higher than you think. Forty percent of mobile applicants will abandon the job application process when they're notified they are about to encounter a non mobile-friendly process. GROWING TRADE FUELS CHINESE ATTENDANCE AT NRA SHOW Over the last five years 1,132 Chinese business people (not including exhibit personnel) have attended the NRA Show. This is a testament to the growing two- way trade between the U.S. and China. The Chinese attendees represent importers, restaurateurs and HRI suppli- ers hailing from many parts of China including Beijing, Shenyang, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Chongqing and a number of other cities. Their interests include fla- vorings, health foods, organic foods, meat and poultry products and equip- ment. U.S. exports of consumer oriented food products to China passed the $6.5 billion mark in 2014. Total U.S. exports of food and agricultural products to China exceeded $18.37 billion, making China the number one destination for U.S. products. Food and hospitality occupy a cen- tral place in Chinese culture. Entertaining is a big deal! New Western visitors to China are likely to be awed by the size of some of the restaurants, some of which can seat several thousand people in a combination of large open spaces and hundreds of private rooms. Meanwhile, as more and more Chinese families include two wage earn- ers, the number of meals con- sumed outside the home is growing rapidly. The HRI (hotel, restaurant and institutional) sector is one of the main beneficiaries of China's economic boom that began more than 30 years ago. The growth in business activity and incomes, which has spread across most of China, has created a new and growing middle class with higher stan- dards and expectations.
