R e s t a u r a n t D a i l y N e w s F r i d a y, M a y 1 5 , 2 0 1 5 6 6 NEW BEAN AND LENTIL SUPERGRAIN PASTAS FROM ANCIENT HARVEST Ancient Harvest, the first brand to bring quinoa to the U.S. in the 1980s, is debut- ing its new lines of protein-packed Bean & Lentil Supergrain Pastas and Lentil & Quinoa Supergrain Mac & Cheese™. "Research shows that a majority of consumers want to add more protein into their diets, and many are looking to plant-based sources of protein," said Constance Roark, MS, RDN and Director of Marketing at Ancient Harvest. "The brand's focus remains on protein-rich ancient grains, like quinoa, but we're continuously cooking up ideas to meet new consumer demands. Now, we've incorporated other high-protein and gluten-free superfoods, like lentils and beans, into our product lines. A pasta dish that tastes great and adds nutritional value to your plate is pretty hard to beat." These naturally gluten-free pasta varieties are made with a hearty blend of quinoa and nutritious legumes. The pas- tas look and act like traditional pasta in every way, from taste to texture, but have two times the protein and a healthy help- ing of fiber in every serving. The five new pasta varieties include Black Bean & Quinoa Elbows and Spaghetti, Red Lentil & Quinoa Rotelle and Linguine and Green Lentil & Quinoa Penne, each with a suggested retail price of $3.39. With 16 grams of protein per serving, the new Lentil & Quinoa Mac & Cheese varieties will join Ancient Harvest's exist- ing line of mac & cheeses. A combination of the high-protein, fiber and nutrition of red lentils and quinoa, the Lentil & Quinoa Mac & Cheese will be available in three creamy varieties, Mild Cheddar with Elbows, Sharp Cheddar with Shells and White Cheddar with Shells, each with a suggested retail price of $2.99. Ancient Harvest bean and lentil pas- tas and new lentil macaroni and cheese varieties will arrive at retailers nation- wide this spring. All other Ancient Harvest products are available in natural food stores and conventional supermar- kets nationwide. MOM'S ORGANIC MARKET TAKES ACTION ON UNSUSTAINABLE PET FOOD TREND Scott Nash, MOM's Organic Market CEO/Founder, came across a Washington Post article that inspired MOM's to take action to increase transparency and bol- ster sustainability within the pet food industry. MOM's has partnered with the Pet Industry Sustainability Coalition (PISC) to develop a survey for existing and potential vendors. Questions include: Do you utilize leftover animal products from the human food system?, Is your seafood certified sustainable by Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch or similar? and Is your packaging recyclable, recy- cled, compostable, and/or responsibly sourced? Pet food was once considered inher- ently sustainable due to its use of leftover ingredients from the human food supply chain. When questions arose regarding ingredient quality of pet products, a surge of brands boasting prime cuts of protein surfaced to meet demand and quell con- sumer worries. But what kind of environ- mental impact do these "high-quality" pet products have? With more than half of American households including at least one cat or dog, sales of pet food are on the rise. The industry purchases over 16.5 billion pounds of meat, poultry, seafood and grains to produce food products just for cats and dogs. As the demand for high- quality pet food grows, so does the con- fusion about the environmental signifi- cance of the industry. As survey results come in, MOM's and PISC will develop a working group of retailers, consumers, and pet food sup- pliers to fine-tune the survey for use across the industry. Lisa de Lima, MOM's Vice President of Grocery, says, "Our goal is to source brands and products that hold an optimum balance between nutrition and sustainability. We want to give our customers peace of mind, knowing they've made the best choice for their pets and the environment." For more information on MOM's Organic Market, visit www.momsorganic market.com.
