P ro d u c e S h o w D a i l y Fri d a y, O c to b e r 1 7 , 2 0 1 4 7 2 CP: Equipment finance for agriculture is interesting because it's so varied. Agribusiness is incredibly equipment intensive along every leg of the journey from farm to table. Produce growers, packers and processors all require differ- ent equipment, and their needs further vary according to their end product. There's also variation in the Ag equip- ment itself, be it different kinds of har- vesters, freezing tunnels for processing food, bagging lines to get it to the freez- ing space, etc. That doesn't even touch on the most critical piece of the puzzle: each client's unique needs. Bank of the West serves a broad range of Ag clients, and they all have highly specific require- ments. We work hard to find the flexibil- ity in structures or payments that offers the biggest benefits for each one. PSD: Why is flexibility important? CP: For Ag, a one-size-fits-all approach just doesn't work. There's often a lot of money laid out up front: you have to grow a product, get it to market, and sell it – and only then does money start com- ing in. For a processor of fresh cherries, the processing season might only last two weeks, then they ship the product and receive their funds. In a case like that, it often makes sense to have one annual payment vs. monthly payments. We're well versed in finding ways to meet the cash-flow requirements unique to the agricultural world. We also provide flexibility in the types of leases and finance products we offer. For example, we can use different Bank of the West ( Cont'd. from p. 1) structures according to a client's view of the useful life of a piece of equipment, which may vary depending on how they plan to use it. We make it our business to understand these nuances and provide a structure that helps meet their needs. For a client who wants to stay on the cutting edge, an operating lease might be more attractive than financing and owning equipment. For others, ownership is key. Getting it right comes down to truly lis- tening to and understanding every client so we can provide a solution that fits. Bank of the West has an established track record of doing just that. PSD: How competitive is equipment finance right now? CP: Equipment finance is extremely competitive, and we are constantly look- ing for new ways to maintain our posi- tion as a leader in this sector. One way we do so is by integrating equipment finance into each of our various busi- ness areas. For example, the Bank's Equipment Finance Division is not a distinct group that just "happens" to do financing for Agribusiness. Instead, our team is highly integrated with the Agribusiness team, working side by side with relationship mangers and sector specialists. This combination of expert- ise in equipment finance and key Ag sectors (including dairy, proteins, grains, wines, nuts and tree fruit), along with flexible structures and pricing, gives us a leg up in providing the best solution for clients.
