H o s p i t a l i t y & D e s i g n S h o w D a i l y Tu e s d a y, J u n e 1 1 , 2 0 1 3 1 4 MEGAPRINT PROVIDES CUSTOM WALL MURALS, PROCESSES AND PRODUCTS Digitally printed wall covering is gaining wide acceptance in the world of interior design. Manufacturers of materials and printing equipment are responding with an increasingly broad array of products to serve the needs of the market. Custom wallpaper is printed on large inkjet printers. These machines are five feet wide or larger, have continuous ink supply systems, and are capable of print- ing 250 or more square feet per hour at 720 dpi. The most common systems are: UV Curable―These printers cure the ink with UV lamps on either side of the carriage. The advantage of this is that the prints are completely dry as they exit the machine, the inks are low cost and they are very durable. If you want your wallpaper to be scrubbable, this is the technology for you. Latex―This is the technology for environmentally aware customers. The latex system is water based, and there are a number of materials, including non- PVC wallpaper, that have excellent envi- ronmental certifications. Solvent―These printers use a sol- vent to carry the pigments to the media. The solvent evaporates, leaving the color. The high cost of ink and environmental footprint are placing this technology in the back seat. All of these printing technologies give you a wall covering product that is fade resistant, waterproof and handsome. The same technologies are used for print- ing outdoor signage, auto wraps, and vinyl banners. The manufacturers are typically giving a three- to five-year guarantee for outdoor use, and the expected life of wall covering installed indoors is much longer. There are a number of choices of wall covering material. All of it is basi- cally unprinted wallpaper which is then printed to order. For toughness, vinyl is the right stuff. It comes in 15-ounce and 20-ounce weights: the 20-ounce has a fabric backing. Usually, it does not have a pre-applied adhesive. A dozen or more textures are available, which adds to your design choices. Paper generally comes with pre- applied adhesive. It's more environmen- tally acceptable, but less durable. Removables are both fabric and vinyl materials with "sticky note" adhe- sive on the back. These are great for tem- porary displays, and are fairly easy to install without hiring someone. The materials stick well to drywall and most reasonably smooth surfaces. Most notable is a PVC-free material, which helps when you are seeking LEED certification. Micro vented PVC is avail- able for high humidity environments. New materials appear with regularity, and a conversation with a knowledgeable printer can help you make good product choices for your application. PRINTEDART DESIGN ADVISORY: MEDICAL OFFICES Medical offices have unique requirements for artwork – mellow and soothing images without being boring are preferred, and they need to inspire happy thoughts with- out creating the desire to be somewhere else. Therefore, designers often find them- selves walking a fine line between using the obvious styled pieces and missing the mark with too much ambition. PrintedArt's curators have looked through the PrintedArt collection and picked their five top images that work well in a hospital, doctor's office or even patient's room. All five are avail- able as a large float-on-the-wall display with acrylic finish, and can also be pro- duced on stretched canvas. Designers can use PrintedArt's "See It On Your Wall" preview feature to visualize if it's a good fit for any office. RETHINK PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT WITH MANNINGTON COMMERCIAL'S DESIGN LOCAL Mannington Commercial has a long- time commitment to building relation- ships with designers and end users throughout the flooring industry, finding innovative ways to engage them in the product design process. As a fourth-gen- eration, family-owned company com- mitted to U.S. manufacturing, the com- pany also has deep roots in the nine communities across America where they manufacture flooring. To celebrate both commitments, last year Mannington created a new way to engage designers, a product competition called Design Local. Mannington invited teams of designers in Austin, Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. to participate in a 24-hour design immer- sion in each city, that would capture a bit of the unique flavor of each city and translate it into a new product collection. So each team member started with a camera, a bit of cash, a sketch pad, and pencils – and two hours to go out into the city, on an "inspiration scramble." Then they gathered together to share ideas and look for common elements or themes, which they worked with Mannington's product designers and colorists to trans- late into concepts for a collection. "As product manufacturers, we were captivated by the idea that a large com- pany could create a platform to support local design, with an emphasis on how design reflects, and contributes to, the communities where creative people live and work," said Natalie Jones, Vice President of Brand Development and Creative Product at Mannington Commercial. In February of this year, Mannington posted the four cities' collections at a dedicated site called ManningtonDesign Local.com, leaving it up to the public to cast votes for their favorite patterns. The grand prize-winning team, whose cre- ation will be launched as a full collection from Mannington Commercial, was TEAM DC – Patricia Duval, Kristyn Hill, Preeti Reddy, Maggie Pascoe, Bonny Slater, and Anne Stahl: designers practicing in New York, Baltimore, and of course the D.C. metro area. Their collection, called "On the Grid," was inspired by the maps, signs, and graphic representations that break up the streets of D.C. into quadrants, grid systems, and traffic circles. At the same time, the walkability and excellent public transportation of the city make it very human, drawing people into the city at all hours of the day and night. A palette of colors reflect the neutral buildings, cotrasts of green spaces and cherry blos- soms. Visit ManningtonDesignLocal .com to watch a short video telling the story of TEAM DC's inspiration and col- laboration.
