H o s p i t a l i t y & D e s i g n S h o w D a i l y 1 1 Tu e s d a y, J u n e 1 1 , 2 0 1 3 DASCO WEAPONS STORAGE: SECURING YOUR DEFENSES There is a lot of discussion these days about the average American's access to weapons. No matter which side of the issue you happen to fall on, the ultimate reality is that weapons (and the safe and secure storage of those weapons) are no longer the sole domain of military facil- ities or police departments. Although those two markets represent the majori- ty of applications, it has become an everyday fact that other organizations such as courthouses, government facili- ties, colleges, universities and even sci- entific research facilities see the need to take action as it relates to protecting their buildings, employees and cus- tomers. And every responsible organi- zation needs to take steps to keep those arsenals of protection away from unau- thorized users. The challenge for the design community is to keep security arsenals conveniently located, yet secure and unobtrusive to the general use of the facility. Dasco Storage Solutions has an excellent reputation for designing and manufacturing secure weapons storage solutions. Once the designer has chosen the space to be used for the weapons stor- age, Dasco can develop a customized solution based on available space, securi- ty requirements, weapons inventory and budget constraints. The Dasco Weapons Storage Cabinets can store virtually any size carbine, rifle, shotgun, pistol, Taser, etc. Each cabinet is equipped with an all- steel, bi-parting tambour door complete with a tubular lock and keys. An addi- tional padlock security bar is optional. The cabinet interior can be assembled to suit any requirement, from individual lockable compartments to heavy-duty drawers, as well as an assortment of storage components. Additional securi- ty access measures can include Card Reader Traceable technology and bio- metric access. Traceable Card Reading Technology The cabinet can be accessed only by per- sonnel who have been issued a valid pass card. The system is fully programmable to add or remove users and cards and each access to the cabinet is recorded with the date, time and the name of the pass card holder (up to 2000 entries). This means all access is fully traceable and secure. Biometrics Only users who have been programmed into the system with a passcode and fin- gerprint can access the cabinet. Users first enter their assigned passcode into a key- pad on the front of the cabinet. Once the code is validated, the user must then sub- mit to a fingerprint scan, which is com- pared to the print on file for that user. If both the passcode and the fingerprint match, the user is granted access to the cabinet. This sys- tem is fully trace- able (as with the card reading tech- nology above), recording the time, date and name of each per- son to access the cabinet (up to 2000 entries). Dasco Storage Solutions is proud to produce high quality cabi- nets that provide client organizations with a solid invest- ment in security. That is why govern- ment, technology and police/military organizations around the world rely on Dasco cabinets. KARNDEAN DESIGNFLOORING ADDS SLEEK, CONTEMPORARY DESIGNS TO OPUS RANGE Karndean Designflooring has expanded its Opus collection, a product range known for its fresh, modern styles. With the addition of these 18 new designs, the Opus collection now contains 37 unique and eye-catching designs that are perfect for both architects/interior designers and homeowners looking to create a clean, contemporary feel. The new stone colors in this collection emphasize Karndean's largest tile size yet, while the new wood designs offer a distinguished palette of smooth, clean colors like never before. The most notable highlights of this update are dark, stone metallics available in both a 6-inch by 36-inch tile and an 18-inch by 36-inch tile. The large, rec- tangular tile combined with the more nar- row, plank-sized tile creates endless lay- ing patterns and design possibilities. Additionally, all Opus colors have coor- dinating design strip options that can cre- ate a distinct, one-of-a-kind look. Opus contains Karndean's largest tiles, with the largest option being the new 18-inch by 36-inch size. Opus wood planks are available in a standard 6-inch by 36-inch or 4-inch by 36-inch size, or an extra large 9-inch by 48-inch suitable for large, open plan homes or commercial spaces alike. While con- taining a wide range of light, mid and dark colors, Opus has a high concentra- tion of gray floors, which is a popular color choice in both residential and commercial spaces. With a 15 year residential, 10 year commercial warranty, the Opus collec- tion is extremely durable and a perfect choice for high traffic areas. The wide range of tones and smooth surfaces, com- bined with clean lines, creates a modern yet simple feel. "We are very excited about the expansion of our Opus collection, espe- cially with the added metallic options being available in two different sizes," said Michael Lang, Senior Marketing Manager at Karndean Designflooring. TRAVEL THE SILK ROAD WITH THE MOHAWK GROUP By Lauri Watnee, LEED AP, CSI, Director, Segment Specialist, Mohawk Group There is something very personal about developing product for senior living communities. Whether you are young or old, there is a very real possibility that you will consider a senior living commu- nity for yourself or a loved one, looking for the place that will bring both quality of life and quality of care, and that per- spective makes us all the more conscious of the impact our products make on peo- ple's lives. Today's seniors represent the most highly educated and sophisticated gener- ation in history. Their expectation of what retirement should look like reflects their life experience and sets the bench- mark for the design of senior living com- munities and the amenities they desire. Senior living residences encompass several distinct levels of care, including independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing care and dementia care. In much the same way increasingly special- ized care is required at each progressing level of care facility, the interior design and products used within become more specialized and purposefully chosen. This holds true in flooring products where the comfort, safety and well-being of the residents can be grossly affected by an incorrect choice. Carpet continues to be the product of choice for senior living facilities and offer a lower risk of injury over hard sur- face flooring, excellent acoustic perform- ance, ease of maintenance, and the abili- ty to provide a moisture barrier when needed. Density of construction and pile height are key considerations in assisted living communities. Many elderly resi- dents shuffle their feet as they walk and require level and firm surfaces to accom- modate walkers, wheelchairs and other mobility assistance equipment. Denser loop and non-sculpted construction car- pets are preferred. Through good design we can address the needs of the residents with varied lev- els of mobility, visual acuity, self-suffi- ciency, and care requirements. Silk Road represents the very best of the intelligence we gained from the owners and interior designers we met with during product development. We understood that the design must incor- porate the warm, welcoming feel of res- idential and hospitality design with commercial functionality and ease of maintenance. We brought fresh color- ways that reflect current trends, but rec- ognized that new patterns and colors must relate to the existing color palettes when a space is being updated and must traverse from traditional to transitional styles, with style. It was important to know that as residents moved to spaces with increasing levels of care, colors tended to brighten, yet pattern scale became smaller. In public spaces, multiple coordinat- ed patterns in varying scale and colors are used to define a space, create func- tional areas, and transition patients and visitors from one area of the facility to the next. Pattern preference leans toward abstract organic patterns and nothing geometric, graphic, or too linear. Please visit the Mohawk show- room at 377 Merchandise Mart to see the new Silk Road Collection from the Mohawk Group. This luxurious Collection includes five running lines and nine custom carpet patterns in a variety of colorways. Silk Road offers comprehensive, coordinated flooring options including broadloom, print car- pet, and Luxury Vinyl Tile to create sophisticated spaces.
