Understanding the business processes of the long term care (LTC) market, KNAPP created an integrated work flow solution featuring an automat- ed storage and order fulfillment system utilizing OSR Shuttle™. The system is designed to provide the required storage capacity for pre-filled blister pack cards, NDC storage in bottles/vials or over-the- counter (OTC) products. The entire sys- tem is also designed for easy expansion if required. The order fulfillment process is highly optimized to ensure error-free, unflawed processes. This provides maxi- mum safety compliance and a highly- controlled order fulfillment environment. Some of the major advantages of the system are its: uniquely identified and managed storage locations for each item; 100 percent card inventory control and inventory availability; FEFO (first expire first out) card inventory allocation to out- bound cartons; lot number tracking and management at all levels; Streamlined, system-guided work processes to increase productivity while avoiding errors; production capacity and processes of the design allows for fulfillment of demand on a 1-day to same day basis; color-enabled print-and-apply technolo- gy for patient specific labels integrated with 5-color printing technology for indi- cation of administration time; and auto- mated NDC and patient label verifica- tion, eliminating the need for pharmacist verification stations. Finally, as part of the fulfillment process, blister pack cards are organized within the outbound car- tons by patient, and then within each patient, the cards are organized by time to administer to the patient; between each different patient in a outbound carton, there is a black divider card placed in order to clearly differentiate the patients within a carton for the nurse/administra- tor of the drugs at the long term care facility. KNAPP solutions provide unmatched results for accuracy, safety, quality, and performance at every step in the fulfillment process. Regardless of hourly/daily output, the process is opti- mized using highly configurable compo- nents to allow the client to minimize operator tasks. The system is designed to function with fewer operators, thereby avoiding the opportunity for errors while increasing performance. Regardless of your automated pharmacy needs, KNAPP provides integrated pharmacy solutions to fit your facility needs. From single pill dispensing to unit of use pick- ing, from receiving to shipping, KNAPP is your partner for all your pharmacy automation plans. KNAPP Logistics Automation Inc., a member of the KNAPP group, is headquartered in Kennesaw, Ga. SMITH COLLABORATES WITH TAKEDA TO PRODUCE CUSTOMIZED 3PL SOLUTION Thirty minutes separates Smith Medical Partners, a wholly owned subsidiary of H. D. Smith located in Wood Dale, Illinois, and Takeda Pharmaceuticals, located in nearby Deerfield. With the implementation of H. D. Smith's third- party logistics (3PL), time is about all that keeps them apart. But "time" has played a pivotal role in their relationship. A joint trading partner initiative between the two companies materialized when Takeda sought a distribution partner to support a new specialty launch. Simultaneously, Takeda was also review- ing the need for a central cross-dock warehouse for all of its products. "Timing was everything," explained Chris Smith, President and COO of H. D. Smith. "Initially, Takeda was looking for a partner for their specialty products – but, recognizing that they could now potentially create a central warehouse for all of their products, their needs grew." The project expanded to include cold chain specialty and additional 3PL cross- dock services to support other Takeda products as well as the IT platform to manage warehouse transactions and inbound EDI sales order entries. "We chose to work with Smith Medical Partners because of the relation- ship we have with H. D. Smith, and, because of the expertise Smith Medical Partners brings to specialty drug distribu- tion, logistics, and patient sup- port," said Chris Giessinger, Takeda's Director of Specialty Distribution. "We were confi- dent Smith Medical Partners would provide the security, cus- tomer service and technology to meet our needs. Plus, they were local, less than 15 miles away and we wanted an Illinois location." "We knew that Takeda sought to have significant input into the project to reflect a tailored facility. Because we had the capability, were flexible and willing to take the risk to provide the solution before the product was approved, and we have a mutual respect for one another, we were selected for the project," said Smith. The partnership between the two organizations leveraged their unique experiences with the entire project being completed in less than 12 months. The collaboration and relationship has improved efficiencies for Takeda by leveraging Smith Medical Partners for its specialty distribution and cross-docking needs. Smith Medical Partners not only warehouses spe- cialty Takeda products, but ships them directly from the warehouse. While it is difficult to calculate the value, from a pure compliance per- spective, there has been a reduction in various risks, including access to Takeda products and picking from the wrong location or picking the wrong product. Those improved standards have had a positive impact on also reduced ware- housing operations costs The 3PL joint initiative was a finalist in Healthcare Distribution Management Association's (HDMA) most recent HDMA Distribution Management Award. PHARMACIES SEE EXCEPTIONAL RESULTS USING ATEB'S TIME MY MEDS Pharmacies who have implemented Ateb's Comprehensive Medication Synchronization Solution, Time My Meds™, are seeing incredible results, including increased prescription sales, improved patient loyalty, and enhanced patient satisfaction. Ateb's Time My Meds solution also helps pharmacy transition to a proactive workflow that enables phar- macies to anticipate when prescriptions need to be filled; allowing pharmacy to develop better inventory management, and to combat being excluded from restricted networks. Ateb's Time My Meds model is a patient care model. Med Sync manages the process for the pharmacy to fill and distribute all of a patient's chronic medication prescrip- tions at the same time each month. Implementing a Med Sync Program pro- vides a new, positive patient experience and lets the pharmacy to take control of their business. Med Sync Programs work because they help the pharmacy and patient communicate on a regular sched- ule. It enables pharmacy to provide their patients with personalized interventions when the patients want them. Time My Meds standardizes the process across all pharmacies, automates many time-consuming manual steps, streamlines the Med Sync process to improve efficiencies, and increases the number of patient enrollments. Ateb pro- vides business intelligence to help phar- macy teams gauge success and maximize opportunity, ongoing operational coach- ing and consultation, and benchmark measurements; Ateb also provides meas- urements and analytics that allow phar- macy to quantify the benefits of the pro- gram. Ateb's analytics include measure- ments, as well as longitudinal analysis that compare prescription adherence rates of patients enrolled in the program, versus patients not enrolled in the pro- gram. Ateb's data shows the effectiveness of a pharmacy's program open opportunities to participate in the overall health care of the patient. Measurements and Analytics Ateb's main goal is to equip pharmacy with the tools, prac- tices, measurements, and busi- ness analytics to ensure that they are pre- pared to compete in the ever-changing healthcare landscape. Ateb demonstrates the value of pharmacist interventions with data segmentation; measuring patient adherence progress through stan- dardized processes. The information analysis of Time My Meds indicates how well the pharmacy is managing patients and also, it gives a precise breakdown of each patient to find what specific inter- vention is right for them individually. Is Med Sync the only solution? Pharmacies who have implemented Med Sync Programs have more time to engage in additional patient care activi- ties, including immunizations, compre- hensive medication reviews, and employer sponsored activities; for exam- ple, patient manage- ment of an employer's employee population to help patient better man- age their health condi- tion such as diabetes or hypertension. After all, with Time My Meds, patients and pharmacy teams are already talk- ing more, so extending these conversa- tions to address the patient's health is easier. Pharmacies that have time to meet with their patients are maximizing this opportunity to impact a patient's overall health. Not all patients respond the same to every program. Ateb has a suite of solu- tions to help pharmacy leverage a combi- nation of programs to reach out to patients in a personalized way to posi- tively impact medication adherence. The proof is in the results.
