Convenience Retailer Show Daily 3 3 Monday, October 8, 2018 Category Growth in Men's Supplements The growth of the supplement market has been nothing less than miraculous, with no signs that it's slowing down. In fact, supplement industry sales are expected to reach $18.3 billion by 2020. Why the huge growth? The growth of this market is the result of a conver- gence of several factors – the perfect storm, if you will. The first one is an aging population. Baby Boomers, the generation born between 1946 and 1964, believe in the power to stay and feel young. Another major factor is the increased awareness among consumers. Celebrity doctors like Dr. Oz and others, online forums, websites and health and wellness magazines all contribute to the popularity of health and wellness sup- plements. In addition, more and more con- sumers are taking control of their own health decisions and foregoing the advice of a doctor. Visiting websites before and after trips to the doctor are almost universally increasing. Many consumers are creating their personal regimen of diet, exercise and supple- ments. It's all becoming part of their daily lifestyle habits. What's it mean to retailers? Retailers need a strategy to take advan- tage of this growing opportunity. It's important to realize consumers can easi- ly order their favorite supplements online. You only have one chance with a customer that visits your store – either they see their favorite supplement or they don't. Make sure you've researched the supplement category and stock the most popular products and brands and keep abreast of categories that are growing. Take advantage of growing cate- gories. Besides the popular protein sup- plements, CoQ10 and omega-3s, many other categories are growing. The men's sexual health market is growing by leaps and bounds. Sexual performance sup- plements and testosterone boosting products are all growing as an aging male population still desires an active, healthy sex life and refuses to give in to the effects of aging. Bone and joint as well as brain health and cognitive functioning sup- plements are also expand- ing rapidly. What it all means is that you need to do your homework and give con- sumers what they want. Stay ahead of the curve by looking for what the next big thing will be and be an early adopter. GORP Energy Bar and GORP Protein Bar Ready Mix Once upon a time, there was a wannabe athlete mom and a farmer from Manitoba, Canada. They fell in love with a big idea: to use their professions, pas- sions and crazy ideas to do some good in this world. Mom, Colleen, was training for triathlons and not finding anything worth eating that was nutritionally dense. She decided to try her hand at making her own, and that's how the GORP Energy Bar was born. Insert farmer here, and you have a bar packed with many local, Canadian, superstar ingredients like oats, flax, hemp, seeds and more. Mix it together with peanut butter, honey and a sprouted brown rice protein and you have yourself a nutrient dense and filling bar, with no weird aftertaste. They hoped for great testimonials from professional sports teams who use the bars, but all that was received was, "It doesn't make me feel bloated" and "It tastes great!" Perhaps not the gleaming reviews that were hoped for, but proof that what Colleen created was a bar that was actually functional and appetizing. Fast forward five years on the GORP journey when Colleen's next part of the big idea comes to fruition. While listen- ing to her customer's feedback for years, she realized there was a need for a more affordable and customizable energy bar. Taking a big risk, Colleen gives away the recipe to her beloved GORP bar and lets her customers make their own! GORP Protein Bar Ready Mix was the answer to many requests, as it makes 25 GORP bars for only $1.00 per bar. Not only that, but consumers can customize the recipe to suit their dietary needs. It is also a Nexty Award winner. One athlete, one farmer, one big idea! GORP provides a nutritional solu- tion for people who are looking for con- venient and healthy snacks.
