Convenience Retailer Show Daily 2 5 Monday, October 8, 2018 Hatch Green Chile: Fruit or Vegetable? By John Owen, Chief Executive Officer, Green Chile Food Company Is there any other fruit or vegetable, besides the Hatch green chile, that takes over thousands of grocery store parking lots during the month of August every year? No, and there is a very good rea- son. There is not a fruit or vegetable more trendy or cool than the Hatch green chile. Nothing rivals the aroma of Hatch green chiles roasting in large metal drums out- side of your local grocery store. If you have never experienced this, you are missing out. Here's the big question: is a green chile a fruit or a vegetable? What is the definition of a fruit or a vegetable? I bet a lot of you reading this article right now would fail the pop quiz on whether a tomato, okra, eggplant or zucchini are fruits or vegetables. Most of you assumed they were all vegetables, didn't you? For those of you who correctly answered that they were all fruits, you should consider yourselves smarter than most! A green chile is a fruit, because the requirement of being a fruit is that it must contain edible internal seeds. Additionally, the green chile is incredibly healthy. It has more vitamin C than an orange, more vitamin A than a tomato and is loaded with iron, magnesium and thi- amine. Many would argue that green chiles are the trendiest fruit in the country and we at The Green Chile Food Company agree. The green chile is as important to Southwest cuisine as the truffle is to French cuisine. Finally, what is the big deal about "Hatch"? Isn't it just an Anaheim chile? The Anaheim chile was brought to New Mexico by a farmer named Emilo Ortega. He transplanted them in the Mesilla Valley, where the town of Hatch is located and where there is a unique bal- ance of soil, hot daytime temperatures and cool nights. This resulted in a distinct and special chile and put the town of Hatch on the map. And remember: chile is a fruit, chili is a recipe. Visit Green Chile Food Company at booth #2929. Safe, Easy Defueling for Natural Gas with WEH Defueling Nozzles Defueling or emptying CNG cylinders bundles (e.g. for trailers) is a frequent challenge for service technicians. Service staff must be sufficiently trained to ensure that the procedure is performed properly and safely. When it comes to emptying CNG tanks, a distinction is made between emergency defueling and defueling for maintenance purposes, such as for repairs to the natural gas tank. The defueling nozzle TK23 CNG by WEH ® was designed for this particular purpose and it is ideal for emptying cylinder bundles, that means for dis- charging CNG from cylinder bundles. The nozzles are equipped with push- pull actuation and the unique WEH Jaw locking mechanism for extra-easy opera- tion. Simply attach the nozzle to the receptacle and push the sliding sleeve to the front to create a pressure-tight con- nection. Now open the shutoff device behind the receptacle and defueling can begin. The plastic thermal covering pro- tects service technicians' hands against frostbite. The defueling nozzles TK6 CNG for passenger cars and TK21 CNG for buses and trucks are available for defueling CNG tanks within vehicles. The defueling nozzles are used for maintenance and inspection of natural gas vehicles. All pressure and fuel tanks must be emptied for any maintenance measures. Defueling nozzles by WEH have proven to be the ideal tool for this purpose. D e f u e l i n g takes place via the vehicle's fueling c o n n e c t i o n . Simply attach the defueling nozzle to the receptacle, turn the opening spindle until it stops and the receptacle is pushed open. Now the fuel tanks can be emptied via the medium outlet at the side. Of course, WEH also provides a comprehensive product portfolio for nat- ural gas refueling, ranging from fueling nozzles, breakaways and filters for fuel- ing stations through to receptacles and check valves for vehicles. WEH was early to recognise the future of alternative fuels, and has since become a global market leader for alternative fueling components. As early as 1986, WEH began extending its product range to include alternative refu- eling components for natural gas and hydro- gen and founded its WEH GmbH Gas Technology affiliate. The NGV1 CNG fueling system devel- oped by WEH has become a standard applied worldwide. WEH is certified in accordance with ISO 9001 and the European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED).
