Produce Show Daily 2 3 Friday, October 20, 2017 Schmieding Produce Introduces Skinny Potato By Scott McDulin, Vice President of Marketing/Retail Sales, H.C. Schmieding Produce, LLC For well over 100 years, the russet pota- to has been America's favorite variety of potato. Whether eating out at your favorite restaurant or enjoying dinner around the family table, russets have always been a big part of most meals. While still representing 50 percent of the overall potato business, this king of spuds has had its share of recent chal- lenges. Due to lower carb diets, fewer Americans preparing meals and bad press, russet sales have continued to decline for years. Other factors leading to the russet sales declines are the emer- gence of other varieties such as Reds, Whites, Yukon Golds and most recently, specialties. Specialty potatoes such as fingerlings, bite sized reds and value added convenience packages have become the shining stars of the potato category. The issue with specialties is they only represent about three percent of the overall category which cannot make up for the russet sales decline. With these challenges, how do we grow the overall potato category? Given the market share of rus- sets, we believe the answer starts and ends by looking for innovative ways to grow russet sales. By no means does this mean we should not con- tinue to develop new vari- eties and convenience packages for today's consumers, but more about "fishing where the fish are." By developing more ways to make the russet potato more appealing to today's consumer, we can grow overall retailer potato sales. Introducing the Skinny Potato, Schmieding's revolutionary 100 calorie answer to help breathe life into the king of potatoes. Sales data confirms that con- sumers have embraced the 100 calorie packs of items like cookies, crackers, pretzels, popcorn, yogurt, etc. Available in a 4- pound bag, we believe the 100 calorie potato option will resonate with today's health-conscious consumers looking for convenience delivered in smaller packs. This premium priced new item will add sales and profits to produce while appeal- ing to the majority of potato consumers. Our high graphic packaging comes com- plete with recipes and meal solutions. PEAKfresh USA Delivers Affordable Modified Atmosphere Packaging You Can Count On PEAKfresh ® products were created in the early '90s at a time when people weren't as educated on the benefits of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP). Today, the produce industry acknowledges that modified atmosphere packaging is need- ed for long distance shipping and retail- ers now demand the use of MAP prod- ucts to maintain certain shelf expectancy, for the most part at grower/shipper expense. PEAKfresh understands that satis- fying these needs can be difficult for growers and shippers and it is here to help. First, it provides a product you can count on. PEAKfresh is a low-den- sity polyethylene film impregnated with a natural occurring mineral that signifi- cantly increases gas permeability, allowing ethylene and other damaging gases to be removed, thus prolonging the life and freshness of produce and floral products. Unlike ordinary plastic film, the intelligent film "breathes," allowing damaging gases to escape as product ripens, while maintaining vita- min C levels. Additionally, the anti-fog- ging properties of PEAKfresh film reduce moisture formation to inhibit bacterial growth and keep high humidi- ty levels. All PEAKfresh products are certified organic (OMRI code: pfp- 2278). Second, PEAKfresh works hard to keep costs lower than its competitors and it doesn't require a yearly contract or high minimums. Easy to use, PEAKfresh adds value to your shipments, so you can e l i m i n a t e costly rejec- tions and a c h i e v e longer shelf life for your produce at a guaranteed lower cost. PEAKfresh offers a variety of prod- ucts to meet your needs. It has a wide selection of stock items available to ship same day as ordering, as well as custom products designed and manufactured to meet your specific sizing and branding needs. Pallet Covers – PEAKfresh prides itself in offering the best unsealed pallet covers in the industry for shelf life. They are easy to use and can be applied by a single person. A great advantage of the pallet covers is that when a skid arrives at the warehouse or distribution center, it can be uncovered, inspected or partially unloaded, then easily re-covered to pro- tect the rest of the load until it is needed. Stock pallet covers are available for 73- inch, 79-inch and 88-inch high pallets, both vented and non-vented. Custom sizes can be made to order and all pallet covers have the capability to be branded with your logo. Box Liners – Box liners are perfect for shippers needing shelf life during extended transportation and/or storage. The vented liners are especially effec- tive for long border crossing inspections or cold chain breaks where there is a need to re-cool in a MAP bag. PEAKfresh liners can be used for all varieties of fruit and vegetables and are made specific to your size requirements. They can be clear or colored, vented or non-vented, and can be branded with your logo. Stop by the PEAKfresh booth for a free sample of its home use produce bag and to see how PEAKfresh products can help you deliver your product just as fresh as when it was harvested! Able Freight Services Celebrates 10 Years of Transporting Freshness from Mexico Able Freight Services celebrates its 10th anniversary of transporting perishables from Mexico to the world, a milestone which underscores the company's fresh approach to identifying opportunities and developing innovative solutions for growth. Able currently operates two facilities in Mexico – one at the Mexico City International Airport (MEX) and one at Guadalajara International Airport (GDL). From these gateways, Able now trans- ports perishables to global destinations with precise efficiency by utilizing the growing airlift from both airports. The Able success story in Mexico began in 2007 when one of the compa- ny's key U.S. accounts requested its involvement and expertise to help navi- gate processes at Mexico City International Airport. The client had very ambitious expansion plans and in 2007, Mexico City was the only reliable export gateway for perishable products to inter- national markets in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The challenge was that as the only export gateway, opportunity for growth was sometimes difficult. Able leaders examined the market opportunities and decided to open a facil- ity in Guadalajara, efficiently linking Guadalajara to its operations at Los Angeles International. Once at LAX, shipments could be instantly forwarded to virtually any place in the world. Over the ensuing years and with close collaboration with WTC (now known as GOING, which operates Guadalajara Airport Cargo Complex), Able's focus has been on establishing its corporate culture at Guadalajara's air- port. This includes a special focus on the company's industry-leading cold chain management, with significant invest- ments made in building large refrigerated rooms inside its cargo complex. Able believes that Guadalajara airport today offers the best airport cold chain and han- dling in the Americas. The company believes the credit for this accomplish- ment is due to the WTC/GOING collabo- ration. Expanding the capacity for perish- able shipments and cold chain integrity would not have been possible without the support of its key cus- tomers in Mexico, as well as the dynamic involvement of the Mexican government (Agriculture and Economic Ministry) who are actively engaged in connecting Mexico to major markets around the world. The results have been notable, as record numbers of perishable exports continue to flow from both Guadalajara and Mexico City. In 2015, the WTC/GOING organiza- tion invited Able to present a project, which became known as The River Trade – Sea Air Solution to the Mexican gov- ernment (Ministry of Agriculture; Economy and Transportation). The concept is to link Chile and Peru to Mexico via Manzanillo, a port on the Pacific coast. This new opportunity means fresh produce (such as blueber- ries) would arrive in Manzanillo on ocean containers, and then transferred – using an international transfer permit – to Guadalajara for re-export to Asia and beyond. A successful trial has been complet- ed and the opportunity holds tremendous potential for new year-round activity at Guadalajara airport. Today, after 10 solid years of growth in Mexico, Able remains an industry leader with operations in both Guadalajara and Mexico City. The compa- ny's plans to continue forging strong relationships with all its industry partners and looks forward to the future with great confidence.
