Michigan Apples are Consumers' Go-To It has been proven time and time again that consumers prefer the look and flavor of apples from the place where apples love to grow. Since 2008, the Michigan Apple Committee has conducted consumer research (consumer research was con- ducted by an independent researcher and funded by the Michigan Apple Committee) in Michigan and Chicago to see what consumers want in an apple. In 14 out of 15 studies, Michigan Honeycrisp ranked No. 1 in taste as well as appearance. Michigan Apples are not defined by just one variety, though. Two other premium Michigan varieties, Fuji and Jonagold, have consistently ranked in the top four. With 16 varieties to choose from, including popular types such as Honeycrisp, Gala, Empire, Fuji, McIntosh, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and Jonagold, consumers can find a favorite Michigan Apple tailored to their tastes and culinary needs. Michigan Apple growers take great pride in producing a safe, quality fruit that consumers love. Besides taste and appearance, con- sumers are also drawn to the fact that Michigan Apples are locally grown. With more than 11.3 million apple trees grown commercially found on 825 family-run farms in Michigan, growers pride them- selves on providing delicious, high-qual- ity apples for consumers that is grown right in their own backyard. Even after the harvesting has ended, Michigan Apples are still available nearly year- round. This is thanks to controlled atmos- phere storage, which allows for fresh apples to be typically shipped from mid-August until June. This way, consumers can have a crispy bite of their favorite apple or whip up their favorite apple recipe any day of the year. The Michigan Apple Committee is a grower-fund- ed nonprofit organization devoted to marketing, education and research activi- ties to distinguish the Michigan Apple and encourage its consumption in Michigan and around the world. RipeLock Provides a Solution for Produce Freshness Concerns in Online Grocery Grocery trends in 2017 clearly indicate increasing consumer demands around convenience, freshness, quality and transparency. Where "one stop shopping" was once critical, consumers are becom- ing more fragmented in their approach, spreading their dollars across multiple channels to meet their grocery needs, including dedicated natural and organic retailers, limited assortment and online channels, to name a few. But many are still pressed for time and crave conven- ience. Supermarket programs such as "click and collect" and home delivery seek to make shopping faster and easier. And the growth of online and alternative channels continues to rise, largely due to Millennials. However, as health and wellness are also rising as consumer priorities, provid- ing fresh, quality products is critical or consumers are lost. Study after study indicates that consumers rank freshness and quality in produce as the most impor- tant factors affecting their purchase deci- sion (even over price). For online retail- ers, this is especially challenging and important, since customers take a leap of faith when placing their produce orders, as they can't preview the actual products they will receive. If online retailers don't deliver freshness, trust is not easily regained. Additionally, the amount of food and dollars wasted on spoilage and customer returns makes the issue an essential one to solve. Technologies are emerging to address these challenges. "Computer vision," where produce can be "seen" by a computer to assess browning and manage stock rotation to avoid spoilage, is one example. Another example is RipeLock™, a technology which enhances the quality and shelf-life of bananas and other fresh produce. The RipeLock Quality System from AgroFresh pro- vides unmatched control over the banana ripening process, helping bananas retain their freshness throughout the supply chain all the way to the kitchen counter. With a specially designed package and an ethylene- inhibiting application, RipeLock main- tains proper humidity during the shipping process, reducing rot and mold, and helps to hold the bananas' color longer, reduce sugar spots and maintain pulp freshness and texture. Research shows that a successful banana program leads to increased sales in overall pro- duce. With a product like RipeLock, online retailers can provide more consistent quality and a longer shelf life of bananas, which will increase customer loyalty, reduce waste and ultimately help drive more sales overall, since consumers are more likely to trust the qual- ity of other perishable and non- perishable products based on a positive experience with bananas. RipeLock bananas are available from your banana supplier, in traditional 40-pound boxes, 10-pound bags, cluster bags and other packaging formats to meet the needs of the online and foodservice industries.
