Broadcasters Show Daily Wednesday, April 26 - Thursday, April 27, 2017 8 R.L. DRAKE DELIVERS A CUT ABOVE BROADCAST QUALITY WITH PEG PLUS R.L. Drake is an American cable TV institution that has been designing and building innovative end-to-end commu- nications systems and video engineering components since 1943. Drake Digital headends are deployed in demanding locations worldwide, such as commer- cial, government and MSO customers of all sizes. R.L. Drake offers multichannel service providers the technical solutions they need to effectively compete in the residential, enterprise and hospitality environments. The PEG PLUS is an affordable, stand-alone MPEG-2 or H.264 digital video encoder, designed for Public, Educational and Government (PEG) access channel applications. The unit offers operators one SD/HD-SDI, or composite video with left + right audio input, and an IP-encapsulation output via a single SFP Ethernet port. A separate RJ45 10/100 Ethernet port is provided for control and monitoring. The PEG PLUS delivers broadcast quality encoding that is a cut above, with two HD or SD streams in either MPEG-2 or H.264 codec with resolutions of 480i, 720p and 1080i. A PCM-embedded audio source can be encoded to either Dolby ® Digital, MPEG1-Layer 2 stereo or AAC stereo. Powered by a sep- arate 110V AC power unit, the PEG PLUS is a small, modular desktop model. Features include unicast and multi- cast capability, configuration shutdown control via HTTP server user interface and programmable API, a built-in watch- dog timer with system reboot capability, user defined PID configuration, ATSC PSIP tables support, as well as DVB service info table generation (NIT+SDT). The unit is available with an optional Zixi out- put protocol that provides the ability to stream content in H.264 format over managed or unman- aged networks. The Zixi UDP based video-optimized protocol provides professional broadcasters, sports net- works and service providers a mecha- nism to adapt to the public internet using standard IP networks as a way to ingest and transport high-quality qual- ity video. IN-BAND INTERFERENCE DETECTION NOW EASY WITH AVQ1022DVBS One of the most common issues in the satellite communication industry is DVB-S/S2 signal spectrum overlapping, or in-band interference. There are a num- ber of potential reasons causing the inter- ference, including jamming signals, transmitter path non-linearity or cross- polarization rejection issues. The expense of detecting and resolving the problem can be significant to the broad- caster. Early detection becomes a crucial part of proactive protection against in- band interference. Whether it is poorly configured sta- tion equipment or accidental interference by another transmitter, signal overlap- ping can result in low SNR (Signal-to- Noise Ratio) and BER (Bit Error Ratio) of a receiver, and eventually may lead to service interruption and satellite link fail- ure. The situation may even grow into a bigger problem when the "ghost" signal has small amplitude relative to the main signal. In this case, the "ghost" is buried under the main signal and its detection becomes a challenge. Avateq Corp. has developed a state- of-the-art DSP (Digital Signal Processing) technique that makes it pos- sible to analyze the signal structure for detecting in-band interference of differ- ent natures. The technique uses sophisti- cated algorithms to sepa- rate the useful signal and underlying noise, under- carrier "ghost" signal or non-linearity products and visualize them on a spectrum plot. This inno- vative functionality is now a standard feature of ActiveCore ® RF Layer Monitoring Receivers and Signal Analyzers for DVB-S/S2 standards, providing addi- tional powerful tools for enhanced "in- depth" analysis of the signal and poten- tial factors of the signal quality degrada- tion. AVQ1020DVBS and AVQ1022DVBS are equipped with an intelligent alarm management system that can be instructed to trigger in case of the signal quality falling below a user defined threshold. Avateq's products allow an operator to monitor remote transmit- ting sites through a web interface or as a part of SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)- based network manage- ment system. The analyz- ers feature an easy to use and highly cus- tomizable alarm system with user- defined thresholds and assigned severity levels. The internal-logging server records events and measured parameters history for archiving and future analysis. PHANTOM CAMERA INNOVATIONS THAT IMPROVE PRODUCTION WORKFLOW Technology is not always about pushing forward into new discoveries. Smaller advancements and innovations of current technology have the potential to drasti- cally enhance workflow in production environments. An example of this lies within the realm of data handling modifi- cations which can create large improve- ments in production output without requiring heavy financial investment. Vision Research, manufacturer of Phantom Cameras, has recently announced two new data management options available to its Flex 4k and VEO cameras. The Flex 4K now has an option to run the new CineMag IV PRO while the VEO cameras has added a 10Gb Ethernet download option. Each of these new innovations significantly contributes to the goal of reducing production work- flow downtime. The CineMag IV PRO is a higher performance version of the CineMag IV. The PRO has been designed specifically for the Phantom Flex 4k to create a fast and seamless ProRes workflow. This new option allows for increased recording time and the simplification of the work- flow by recording images in RAW and ProRes 422 HQ encoded files. Sometimes raw files are not required and the footage gets converted to a high qual- ity compressed format any- way. Selecting ProRes 422 HQ in-camera saves valu- able time and money asso- ciated with that conversion process, and allows for more footage on each CineMag. This innovation is compatible with all Phantom Flex4K cameras as long as the firmware is up to date. The VEO 10Gb Ethernet connectivi- ty upgrade provides operators with a sig- nificant decrease in the amount of down- time required between shots. By design high-speed cameras capture a lot of data in a short amount of time. A Phantom VEO is available with up to 72GB of RAM, which can record for 12 seconds at 1,000 fps. That means that every 12 sec- onds of real footage recorded there needs to be a downtime in production so that the data can be saved to a computer. Standard Gb Ethernet save times on the full 72 GB of RAM would be about 20 minutes. With the 10Gb Ethernet innovation upgrade 72 GB of RAM can now be down- loaded in full in roughly two min- utes to an optimized system. Even though it is rare the full RAM gets saved for every shot, it is now fea- sible to do so, or at least more than would be saved otherwise. Regardless, this is a significant reduction in the production downtime when on-site, and that means more opportunities to record new events throughout the course of a day. Visit Phantom booth #C8739 in the Central Hall to learn more about these great tools for enhancing production effi- ciency.
