INNOVATIONS IN SHIPPING & PACKAGING For businesses, shipping efficiently and reliably at a reasonable cost can be a huge hurdle. The rise of e-commerce means consumers expect goods to arrive on their doorstep with greater speed and security than ever before. Meeting these rising shipping demands requires new solutions and technologies, and the U.S. Postal Service™ has committed itself to developing the solutions. The following are three ways in which the Postal Service is adapting to the shipping needs of its customers: Pricing That Enables America's E-Commerce No one delivers more e-commerce pack- ages than the U.S. Postal Service – and delivering value for each shipping dollar is always important. In 2016, two major shipping companies expanded their use of Dimensional (DIM) Weight pricing on domestic shipping, meaning lower weight packages can be billed at higher rate based on the size of box used. The Postal Service recognizes that when it comes to shipping, one size does not fit all. By reserving DIM weight pric- ing to very specific circumstances, the Postal Service has created shipping solu- tions that match costs to the products that are being shipped. By providing a range of efficient and economical domestic shipping services, the Postal Service is aiming to make shipping cheaper for businesses, without sacrificing any of the quality. A New Category of Box Shipping electronics has never been easy. Most packaging is ill-suited to house an individ- ual device's dimensions and often requires customers to pre-wrap the product before placing it in the box. This is why the Postal Service developed its Precious Cargo Boxes, which are designed to help customers easily and safely transport high-priced electronics. Due to strategically placed bright blue polyethylene bumpers, these boxes can safely cushion smartphones, tablets or laptops simply by placing it in the box. Whether it's replacing a college student's iPhone or shipping new tablets to your workforce, this new category of box makes some of the most difficult items to ship seamless. E-Commerce Solutions As e-commerce continues to boom, retailers are constantly looking for new products and services that take advantage of informa- tion and technology. That's why, as the coun- try's leading deliverer of e-commerce packages, the Postal Service is bringing new, simple solutions to the table. One example is "Scan, Weigh and Pay," a system that has helped retailers like eBay simplify shipping for their cus- tomers. By using the Postal Service's scanning, weighing and payment sys- tems, eBay customers are able to get flat rate shipping that was previously unavailable to them. This technology has streamlined the shipping process and grown the number of packages the Postal Service is delivering for eBay. Perhaps more importantly, it's allowed both eBay and its customers to save time and money. For more information, visit www.usps.com. NEW CRYSTAL UNIT SOLUTIONS FOR IOT APPLICATIONS DEVELOPED BY MURATA Murata Americas introduced several miniaturized, highly advanced crystal units developed specifically for the IoT market. The company used its propri- etary technology and volume produc- tion capability to design a product line that excels in quality and reliability, while also providing a cost-effective solution. The series features a compact package that allows for higher-density mounting and use in lower profile devices. Target applications include IoT, mobile devices, wireless communi- cation protocols, and medical and healthcare products. The ubiquity of wireless communi- cation-enabled devices has driven the growth of products equipped with advanced functionality. This has been accompanied by the demand to downsize mobile devices and wireless communica- tion modules. Further, there is a need for products to be RoHS-compliant and to be able to accommodate lead-free solder mounting. These crystal units meet all of the afore- mentioned requirements. The line-up includes the XRCED series, the world's smallest packaged crystal unit measuring just 1.2 by 1.0 by 0.33 mm. The XRCGB-F-H achieves +/- 10ppm initial frequency tolerance to enable Bluetooth ® technology and meets the requirements for RF applications in a compact size, a feature that existing product lines could not deliver. Finally, the XRCMD and XRCFD offer a range of operating frequencies, temperatures and toler- ance ranges that design engineers require today to produce tomorrow's products. "Murata is unsur- passed when it comes to leveraging our proprietary technologies to reach new levels in the consumer electronics mar- ket. Our commitment to innovation and meeting the needs of this industry will only further future advancements," said Jonathan Davis, Timing and New Products General Manager, Murata Americas.
