BSD: Tell our readers about your com- pany. What's your main line of busi- ness? TL: Vision Research designs and manu- factures the Phantom brand of digital high-speed cameras. We are based in Wayne, New Jersey, and have been in the high-speed imaging industry for over 60 years – primarily developing camera systems targeted at scientific and industrial applications such as man- ufacturing, automotive, defense and medical research. In 2007, we entered into the TV and motion picture industry with the Phantom HD. We now offer a comprehensive product line geared towards our more traditional scientific markets as well as cameras like the Phantom V642, Flex and Flex4K which were designed specifically for TV broadcast and the digital cinema indus- try. BSD: What would you say makes your company unique? TL: We are a relatively small company, and have good relationships with our customer base. This allows us to design cameras and imaging solutions for spe- cific applications completely driven by our customer's needs. BSD: What was your program last year? What's your current product emphasis? TL: For the media market, 2015 focused on feature updates for the Phantom Flex4K which started shipping in 2014. The Flex4K has a native resolu- tion of 4096 x 2304, and supports both standard and high frame rates up to 1,000 frames-per-second (fps) at 4K res- olution, and 2,000 fps at 1080p. Besides its high frame rate capabilities, the cam- era is also revered for its excellent image quality. This is our first complete- ly self-contained professional cinema camera, where all the menu controls are built into an intuitive on- camera control interface. The camera can be battery operated, has interchange- able lens mounts and has all the inputs and outputs that are needed for a suc- cessful production. Our current emphasis remains on the Flex4K and the rollout of planned feature updates to the camera itself and its workflow, with the intention to make it seem less like a specialty camera. Besides rolling out new features, we recently dropped the price of the camera and CineMag IV recording media, and for that reason, it's starting to reach some new customers, which is great! BSD: What distinguishes your products from the competition? TL: Phantom cameras have always stood out in the high-speed market based on advanced features, image qual- ity and workflow. We have an extensive line of cameras that range from small, compact and portable systems to some of the most powerful high speed cam- eras out there. Competition in the digital cinema market is a lit- tle different than our traditional markets, and the Phantom Flex4K is definitely unique. The Flex4K provides the ultimate in flexibility by shooting anywhere between 15 to 1000 fps at 4K reso- lution, up to 2,000 fps at 1080p, faster at lower resolutions, and it supports sever- al different control options, output for- mats and workflows. TURN YOUR 4K CAMERA INTO 4 HD CAMERAS FOR A LIVE PRODUCTION APPLICATION Datavideo, a leading manufacturer of live video production equipment, is proud to announce a new product that revolutionizes the way 4K cameras are used for live video productions. The KMU-100 is a unique 4K multi-camera production solution that delivers multi- ple virtual full HD (up to 1080p) scaled camera angles with minimal installation cost and simple operation. The basic concept is straightfor- ward: The output of a single 4K/UHD camera is connected to KMU-100, which then displays up to four 16x9 user-defined cropped windows that are sent out as four separate HD signals through HD-SDI. These user-defined windows can be scaled to zoom in on a particular subject that you would like to highlight on the 4K signal. An addition- al 4K camera could be connected to allow up to eight defined outputs from the two 4K signals. As an option, the Datavideo RMC-180 camera controller can be added to easily pan, tilt and zoom to create the user defined win- dows on the 4K signal. You can set up these shots in advance and save them as presets, or you can do it in real-time. For example, if you wanted to broadcast a live three-piece band con- cert using a 4K camera, simply set up the 4K/UHD camera with a wide angle shot, then connect the camera output to the KMU-100. Use the RMC-180 con- troller to select up to four 16x9 win- dows which could be positioned with a joystick as well as resized from any part of the original 4K signal. You can now have the following shots: wide angle of the band; a close up shot of the lead singer; close up drummer and drum set; and close up of piano player. These four virtual camera signals (up to 1080p) could be connected to any HD-SDI switcher, giving the illusion of a multi camera production when in reality, you only have one 4K camera. "Finally, it's viable to use a 4K camera in live multi-camera produc- tion," states Craig Moffat, Managing Director of Datavideo US. "Imagine how convenient it would be to set up a live video production for concerts, press conferences, sporting events or a worship service. No camera operator needed and minimal set-up time – a real game changer for live video pro- ducers." ARDIS TECHNOLOGIES SHOWS VISION OF FUTURE OF STORAGE AT SHOW The storage market changes rapidly due to all flash, hybrid and cloud technology. Ardis Technologies exhibiting under its product name Dynamic Drive Pool demonstrates its microDDP10GbE as an example of all flash. The DDP60EXR is demonstrated as an example of a hybrid solution. The DDP vision is previewed with a setup combining three microDDP10GbEs into one DDP, here, there and elsewhere. Here, there and else- where stands for different locations on inter, intranet. In a number of cases, this could be a better alternative for sharing and collaborating via the cloud. The microDDP10GbE is 1U, 19", has a depth of 10" (25,5 cm), is very silent, has low power and can be hand carried (11lbs, 5Kg). It currently comes with either 8 x 1 or 8 x 2 TB SSDs in raid 5 with an effective capacity of 7 or 14 TB. It has dual 1GbE/RJ45 and dual 10GbE/RJ45 ports which can be used also as 1GbE. These four ports give a total bandwidth of 2,2 GByte/s. A microDDP10GbE with capacity up to 60TB can be offered upon request. For other all flash requirements, a 4U miniDDP48D can be offered. Regarding hybrid technology, each DDP consists of a DDP base system which can be optionally filled with SSD and or HD packs of different capacities and 1, 10, 40, 100GbE network cards and ports. So each DDP other than the microDDP can be all flash, hybrid or all spindles. On the web interface in the Storage Manager these packs show up as data locations. Also storage arrays such as DDP16EXR, DDP24EXR and DDP60EXR show up as data locations when added. To avoid com- plexity, the selection of a data location in the Storage Manager has been limited to folder volumes. Folder volumes are fold- ers with volume properties. They reside within the DDP Volume. Selection possi- bilities are a data location, load balancing with the data balanced on all data loca- tions and on demand or pinned SSD caching. On demand caching means that data is copied from spindles to the SSD data location when a file is opened. When pinned is selected, the data from the folder volume is cached to the SSD data location. Storage arrays can be added at the back without changes at the front end. After adding the storage array(s), the data redis- tributes automatically. Now we get to the DDP vision regarding the future of storage: V5 soft- ware of which a preview is shown. Until today users can share their data working with one DDP. Worldwide many DDPs are in operation this way. With V5, users can share their data within multiple DDPs (data locations) within one DDP volume. That is, the DDPs must be on the same Ethernet or subnet. Especially with microDDPs, they can be here, there or elsewhere since they are very low power and no machine rooms are required. DDPs can be combined with one DDP holding the metadata and one web inter- face to administer. Data is transferred in parallel and bandwidth scales linear in steps of 2,2GB/s while adding microDDPs, depending of course on bandwidth and latency of the network. There are many setups possible, such as: within a building in a machine room, within a building in each studio (no machine room needed), between build- ings on a campus, between companies in an area, between cities in a company, between countries, fixed and outside broadcast installations. Think of the power savings. Think of the space sav- ings. And remember each setup involves one admin web interface to control users, groups, data access, activity and loca- tion(s) here, there and elsewhere. For more information, visit www. ddpsan.com.
