B r o a d c a s t e r s S h o w D a i l y T u e s d a y , A p r i l 1 9 , 2 0 1 6 2 8 PLANAR UNVEILS CUTTING-EDGE TRANSPARENT OLED TECHNOLOGY Planar Systems, Inc., a global leader in display and digital signage technology, announced new transparent OLED tech- nology. The 55" prototype at ISE 2015 will utilize breakthrough Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology to improve the transparency of see- through displays, creating new opportu- nities for experience design while over- coming a major hurdle to transparent display adoption. OLED displays are self-emitting, eliminating the need for a backlight or enclosure. This first-of-its- kind technology demonstrates Planar's continued leadership in transparent dis- plays, which began 16 years ago and continues with the Planar LookThru Series transparent LCD display offer- ing. "The vision of transparent displays, popularized for decades in science fic- tion movies and television shows, is now nearing reality," said Jennifer Davis, Vice President of Marketing at Planar Systems. "This technology is poised to revolutionize space design, customer engagement and the digital display of information and branding for decades to come, and we are proud to be a pioneer in this next wave of trans- parent display development." Transparent displays allow users to view what is shown on a glass video screen while still being able to see through it, enabling them, for example, to overlay digital images onto real objects that sit behind the glass. Based on continued customer feedback and further technology development under way, Planar anticipates adding transpar- ent OLED technology as a product offering in early 2016, paving the way toward broad market adoption. Ideal for a Broad Range of Applications Transparent OLED is ideal for a broad range of applications, including those in retail, museum and corporate settings. Retailers can install these displays in front of actual products to provide digital information about their merchandise, creating augmented reality experiences. Museums can use them to encourage patrons to interact with exhibits by dis- playing artifacts overlaid with text, images or video content designed to edu- cate and inspire. Companies can incor- porate them into their lobby, cafeteria and conference rooms as a dynamic way to present information to employees and customers while maintaining an interior design aesthetic of modern transparency. Planar's transparent OLED will allow designers to activate glass surfaces that are incorporated into these spaces, like interior windows, room dividers and par- titions. "We are excited to see the new types of experiences we can create with trans- parent OLED," said Thomas Wester, Technology Director of Second Story, which is part of the storytelling agency SapientNitro. "It represents an exciting new canvas to paint on, and we are proud to be developing one of the first public experiences to demonstrate this technol- ogy. Planar is a leader when it comes to innovation in transparent displays and this latest OLED technology demonstra- tion showcases its ongoing commitment to pushing boundaries." Brilliant Picture Quality, Wide Viewing Angles Transparent OLED offers brilliant pic- ture quality, exceptional contrast and wide viewing angles. Because the OLEDs themselves emit light, viewing angles are very broad and color perform- ance is exceptional, leading to vivid, eye-catching installations. Moreover, because only those pixels that display content are turned on, a transparent OLED showing video will exhibit better contrast and energy efficiency than tradi- tional displays. A leader in transparent displays, Planar introduced its first transparent display in 1999. "Pressure on journalists to hit dead- lines is enormous and continues to increase," adds Sales Director Gabriel Janko. "Octopus 8 features a new dash- board GUI which brings together every assignment, notification and update. Until now, newsroom solutions have treated social media as an add-on feature. With Octopus 8, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are fully integrated into the newsroom. Social media is now treated with the same importance as a traditional news feed or a programme rundown. This is a big advance which reflects the huge importance of social networks to channel owners and audiences world- wide." Octopus 8 gives administrators the ability to assign users to create content for social media. Tweets and Facebook posts are treated like any other news story with team managers able to assign and share tasks, and to approve posts before they go live. Journalists can now follow Twitter trends and track topics of particular interest to them across the social network in real time. The research process is now automated, giving teams instant information and analyses trends over time. Editors can tweet, reply, re- tweet or favorite directly from Octopus as well as manage the channel's relation- ships by following or blocking Twitter users. With audiences increasingly using the internet for their news, media organi- zations are under ever increasing pres- sure to publish stories to the web. Octopus 8 directly interconnects with CMS systems such as Wordpress or Joomla, allowing scripts and articles to be uploaded dynamically to web portals. This new web component enables TV news editors to upload pages directly, saving time and reducing the workload on web managers. Another new feature is the ability to publish social media posts directly from the rundown. Also making its NAB Show debut, the new Octopus Mobile App offers jour- nalists full news production capabilities on tablets and mobile phones running Apple iOS or Google Android. Reporters and editors working remotely gain instant access to all wires, rundowns and assign- ments. They can also edit stories within a rundown, preview prompter text as well as create wires and reports in the field. The new app supports both Octopus 8 and the most recent versions of Octopus 7.
