sumers are so excited about this new tech- nology. W h i l e most of the typical storage players are dragging their feet on Thunderbolt3 products, Akitio has taken the lead and already has several Thunderbolt3 products on the market. Its first Thunderbolt3 prod- uct was the Thunder3 Duo Pro, a two bay enclosure that can hold either 2.5- inch or 3.5-inch hard drives or SSDs. The enclosure is completely tool-less, making it incredibly simple to install or swap out drives. The answer is highly dependent on who you are: the consumer, the network- based service provider or the network operator. Consumers want immediate respon- siveness, regardless of service: web pages that load fast, transactions that progress quickly and securely and videos that start immediately and play without buffering, in sufficient, non- blocky resolution. They want these things 24/7/365, whether it is Cyber Monday, or a live World Cup match, at home or riding in a train. Service providers want their cus- tomers to be engaged for as long as pos- sible, and to return often. They want to provide the same experience the con- sumer wants, but at a cost that supports their business. The network operator is challenged to cost-effectively meet these needs while also meeting regulatory require- ments, quickly identifying and fix- ing problems when they occur, and accurately making the right invest- ments to maintain a "goldilocks" net- work that matches capacity with demand. Unfortunately, a "right-sized" network for streaming the World Cup finals is likely massive overkill for the other 99.9 percent of the year. With appliance-based networks, the goals of each of these groups are often in conflict with one another, pitting the consumer, service provider and network Continued on Page 29 Continued on Page 29 AN INDEPENDENT PUBLICATION NOT AFFILIATED WITH NAB AKITIO DOMINATING THE THUNDERBOLT3 STORAGE MARKET 2016 will be remembered as the year of USB Type-C and Thunderbolt3. As more and more new Windows-based PCs hit the market with Thunderbolt3 ports, consumers are flocking to snap up external Thunderbolt3 storage products. There is a definite need to add addition- al storage to the often very small inter- nal drives that most Thunderbolt3 lap- tops are shipping with, and consumers are turning to Akitio for premium, high quality Thunderbolt3 storage products to connect to their new PCs. Experts have estimated that there will be nearly two million Thunderbolt3 Windows-based PCs in the hands of end-users by early Q2 of this year. The main reason for the widespread adoption of Thunderbolt3 is the incredible trans- fer speed increase of Thunderbolt3 when compared to USB. The new Akitio Thunder3 PCIe Box for example comes with a 1.2TB Intel 750 Series PCIe SSD and is able to transfer files at speeds of 2.2GB (2200MB) per second. Compare that to typical USB 3 transfer speeds of around 200MB per second (with an SSD installed) and you can see why con- Lee M.
