C o n s u m e r E l e c t r o n i c s D a i l y N e w s 7 7 S a t u r d a y, J a n u a r y 9 , 2 0 1 6 "express charging corridors" on the east and west coasts of the United States of America, drivers can easily connect to a network of EV chargers, accelerating the transition away from fossil fuels. Across the United States of America, transportation is responsible for 30 per- cent of all greenhouse gas emissions. The more EVs on the road, the fewer green- house gas emissions will be produced. With more than 350,000 EVs sold in the United States, drivers need more charging flexibility while on the go. Because of limited range and a lack of fast chargers, drivers have so far been unable to engage in long-distance travel. ChargePoint, together with BMW and Volkswagen, is creating ICT-enabled express charging corridors to provide EV drivers access to fast chargers along the most heavily populated and highly traf- ficked regions on the east and west coasts of the United States. The fast chargers allow drivers to "gulp" energy when needed, similar to the way a traditional driver fuels his or her vehicle, and can power a vehicle from empty to 80 percent in just 20 to 40 minutes. Providing the flexibility to engage in this kind of charging eases the transition from fueling with gasoline to fueling with electricity. Enabling EV owners to engage in long-distance travel virtually eliminates ChargePoint (Cont'd. from p. 1) the need for traditional gasoline. The express charging corridors not only ben- efit EV drivers, but also their ability to support widespread EV adoption. As EVs continue to replace traditional vehicles, greenhouse gas emissions from trans- portation will continue to fall. As part of the ChargePoint network, drivers using the express corridors will be able to use a mobile app that allows them to find available stations, start a charging session with just one tap, get real-time updates about charging status and view charging history. Drivers will be able to easily navigate to chargers based on their need, availability and schedule flexibility. Once drivers make the switch to driving electric, many find that the cars – in addition to yielding lower green- house gas emissions – are also better vehicles with more advanced features and technology. This evolution not only represents a significant shift away from fueling with gasoline, but it also enables more intelligent energy man- agement solutions now and into the future. After every training session, my coach and I look at the data to see how we can better plan for the changes in my glucose levels when competing." "Before I started using CGM, I would sometimes have to stop mid-work- out and check my glucose levels," said Freeman. "With this latest generation of Dexcom CGM, I trust the device to alert me if I'm too high or low based on the levels I program into the device. If it doesn't alert me, I am confident to con- tinue my workout." Freeman is currently using Dexcom's latest product – Dexcom Dexcom (Cont'd. from p. 4) G5™ Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring system. Dexcom G5 Mobile gives users the option of transmitting directly to an iPhone or to a display device. By transmitting directly to a compatible phone, users have one less thing to carry. Freeman wants to empower people to take control of their diabetes with all of the tools available. "I want people to understand that diabetes is a manageable disease. Using a CGM, like Dexcom, can allow you to gain control of your diabetes and fulfill your dreams. You shouldn't have to let diabetes define you." While driving home, I came up with this idea and pulled off the road to scratch it down on my notepad. Eighteen months later, it's reality. CEDN: What makes Beeline unique? BW: I designed a cell phone case that is minimal, durable, stylish and functional. The Beeline carabiner will secure your phone to your backpack, belt loop or purse, so you never have to worry about losing it. Beeline has a sleek built-in carabiner on a Kevlar cord that extends out of the phone case so you can use it to call, text or take a photo and then simply retract the cord and the carabiner returns to its hidden position. CEDN: Who do you feel your end user for the brand is? BW: The Beeline case is great for all consumers. It's a well-built everyday cell phone case. If you're an active person that enjoys hiking, riding, golfing, run- Beeline (Cont'd. from p. 1) ning, hunting, paddling, fishing, travel- ing, working or anywhere in between, you can be secure with a Beeline by your side. This would also be a great tool for fire, police or military personnel. Also, we can all tell a story about leaving our cell phone on the airplane, or in a restau- rant or bar, but a Beeline case keeps your phone by your side. CEDN: What phone cases are you man- ufacturing? BW: Currently we offer cases for the iPhone 5/5S, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+. We are in development on waterproof case for Q3 2016. We have a great color palette and are also licensed to manufac- ture Mossy Oak camouflage cases. It's a fresh line-up with great colors and I'm looking forward to seeing the response at retail. So what is 5G? In its essence, 5G will be a new standard when it comes to radio based mobile connectivity follow- ing the current 4G standard, also known as LTE. The ambition is that 5G will give considerably more bandwidth (capacity) and speed compared to current technolo- gies. In addition to increased speed and capacity, 5G will also shorten latency considerably. If 4G has been about everyone being connected, 5G is about everything being connected. The features of future 5G net- works, such as very high speed and capacity with very low latency, are excel- lent for the expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT), with new use cases such as remote machinery control, mobile robot- ic deployment and intelligent transporta- tion systems. Remote Machinery Control – with 5G, heavy machinery can be remotely con- trolled with real-time responsiveness. One advantage of this approach is that a skilled worker could manage multiple projects around the world in the same work day. Mobile Robots – as 5G networks are rolled out, traditional robots will be replaced by new models connected to the cloud. Powered by the speed and capaci- ty of the 5G network, the cloud-enabled robots will act in real time, able to make changes on the fly. These new robots will have access to almost unlimited comput- ing power, making them more flexible, more usable and more profitable to own and operate. Ericsson (Cont'd. from p. 1) Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) - 5G networks will create new opportunities for transportation systems. Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) commu- nications will enable fleet management, infotainment, remote car diagnostics and remote management. Other use cases involve vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) com- munications, where active safety using sensors in cars and communications between vehicles will help drivers to anticipate, detect and avoid potentially hazardous situations. Finally, vehicle-to- pedestrian (V2P) use cases are being explored, where devices such as LTE smartphones allow a vehicle to detect other people nearby, and respond as nec- essary to avoid accidents. Looking Ahead The ICT industry is now moving into the next phase of the 5G journey. Standardization work has been initiated, and a vibrant ecosystem is forming as both operators and industries start to explore 5G's transformative possibili- ties through activities such as test-bed cooperation and use case development. Ericsson's technology leadership puts us at the forefront of 5G research and development. At the same time, we understand that realizing the full poten- tial of 5G requires cross-industry collab- oration. That is why we are focused on driving a global 5G ecosystem that com- bines Ericsson's unique capabilities with the strengths and insights of cus- tomers, industries and academia to drive the opportunities in the Networked Society.
