C o n s u m e r E l e c t r o n i c s D a i l y N e w s 4 7 S a t u r d a y, J a n u a r y 9 , 2 0 1 6 BUYER BEWARE: NOT ALL ANTIMICROBIAL SCREEN PROTECTORS CREATED EQUAL Don't be fooled by companies that claim they have screen protectors that are "antimicrobial/bacterial." The majority of these screen protectors are topically coated and extensive testing has proved that the coating typically lasts less than 60 days on a touch screen device. It will rub off; other- wise why would they recommend that you replace it every 90 days? Additionally, most are not registered or listed with the FDA or EPA. Further, these screen protectors are made of a plastic known as polyethylene tereph- thalate (PET), which is highly suscep- tible to scratches, abrasions and offers no impact resistance. By now we should all know how dirty and disgusting our cell phones are. According to Dr. Charles Gerba, cell phones are the No. 1 dirtiest item we come in contact with multiple times per day, harboring as many as 25,000 germs per square inch. Further, there are documented studies that show we can get acne from our smartphone devices. According to Neil Sadick, MD, "Holding your phone against your cheek traps oil in the pores, which can lead to those deep-forming acne cysts." Dermatologists agree that cell phones are one of the leading causes of adult acne. The cesspool of dirt and bacteria on your phone can cause breakouts on your chin, cheeks and around your mouth. There just isn't anything that truly keeps you safe from these deadly microbes, and that is a problem, until now. iShieldz ® has long been known for producing high quality screen protection systems. With over 25 years in the applied film technology industry, iShieldz has quickly become a leader in mobile device protection. The antimicrobial agent is embedded into its material during manufacturing, not topically coated. This method of combining the antimicrobial additive renders it 100 percent effective for seven years. Chances are you'll be upgrading your touchscreen device long before that. It is also FDA registered and EPA listed. It prides itself on the fact that its prod- ucts are made in the United States from only the highest quality, proprietary materials. iShieldz screen protectors with Seal Shield™ technology kill up to 99.99 percent of common microbes on the film's surface. Combining the medical grade strength of the Seal Shield antimicrobial additive with u n r i v a l e d I m p a c t Resistance and HD clarity makes iShieldz RX the ultimate level of device protection. Its line of antimicrobial products goes beyond screen protection. iShieldz now offers a line of rugged cases that have been military tested, meeting Mil-STD-810F for many of today's most popular smartphones. There is no other product on the mar- ket combining military toughness with medical grade antimicrobial protec- tion. In addition, slated for launch in January 2016, is iShieldz new propri- etary antimicrobial privacy film that will help hospitals comply with new HIPPA regulations. Just a few of the pathogens that iShieldz antimicrobial products protect against include MRSA, SARS, E-coli and Influenza. For more information, visit the iShieldz booth #36261 at CES. LATEST INNOVATIONS FROM DEXCOM An interview with Jake Leach, Senior Vice President of Research and Development at Dexcom. CEDN: What's the latest innovation from Dexcom? JL: Dexcom G5™ Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system is the first and only FDA-approved device that transmits your glucose readings directly to your iPhone. For the first time, users can leave their display device at home and discreetly check their glucose levels on their phone throughout the day. Dexcom G5 Mobile provides trending glucose levels and readings every five minutes (Dexcom G5 Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring System, User's Guide, 2015), so users can see which direction their glucose is headed. Also, Dexcom G5 Mobile is approved for patients ages two years old and above. Dexcom is also leading the industry with using the cloud to share data between multiple devices and apps. Our focus is to protect all private health data, while at the same time allowing our users to access their data and share it to help them better manage their diabetes. CEDN: What can we expect to see from Dexcom in the future? JL: We are truly excited about our part- nership with Google. We plan to co- develop a product designed to provide glucose information for patients, as well as their healthcare providers. Our goal is to provide personalized tools to help make appropriate lifestyle and behavior choices to improve their diabetes man- agement. CEDN: How do you see precision medi- cine tying into diabetes care? JL: On a daily basis, we are pro- viding precision medicine for our patients who use Dexcom CGM. Our exceptional sensor accuracy provides readings every five min- utes that our users can trust (Dexcom G5 Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring System, User's Guide, 2015). With this data, we are able to show trends and alert the user to the speed that their glucose is rising or drop- ping. We provide patients with very per- sonalized tools to manage their diabetes – I can't think of everyday medicine that's more precise than that. CEDN: One of the topics at CES revolves around the business models for digital health and partnerships. How do you think companies can learn from Dexcom? JL: At Dexcom, we support the concept of patients making their own lifestyle choices in choosing different ways to manage their diabetes – whether that includes insulin pumps, CGM, injections, etc. We want to support further develop- ing products in those areas. We currently have partnerships with insulin pump manufacturers where we're integrating the next genera- tion of CGM into those pump products to help streamline the devices and manage- ment for patients. We are also actively working in the Artificial Pancreas project along with other research and clinical trials. Precise and reliable data is imperative for getting new products and procedures FDA approved. Our commitment and consis- tent delivery of exceptional sensor accu- racy is the reason why we are the sensor of choice among many researchers. GHOSTDRONE 2.0 BY EHANG MAKES FLYING EASY FOR EVERYONE By now, most of us would agree that consumer drones are here to stay. But even though drones have been edging into the mainstream market, enthusi- asts have largely been limited to a group of tech savvy hobbyists and pro- fessionals aiming to capture slick aeri- al footage – in other words, not your everyday consumer. But a new surge in technology and forward-thinking com- panies in the industry are aiming to change all of that. UAV company EHANG Inc., (CES, #25208, LVCC South Hall 2) is at the forefront of this shift, and its lat- est drone – The GhostDrone 2.0 – has turned the industry on its head by cre- ating a drone that makes the piloting experience accessible to anyone. Founded in 2014 by Huazhi Hu, a suc- cessful information technology entre- preneur and flying enthusiast, EHang launched GhostDrone 2.0 with the intent of developing a truly immersive flying experience by combining first- person virtual reality and gesture- based tilt control to replace unwieldy RCA controls. "The GhostDrone 2.0 has trans- formed the piloting experience," explained Derrick Xiong, Co-founder of Ehang, headquartered in Guangzhou, China, with offices in Beijing and San Francisco. "My founder and I always felt that drones were too unapproachable for the aver- age consumer, even though they stood so much to gain from flying them. That notion was at the center of everything we built for the GhostDrone 2.0; with the accompanying EHang Play smart- phone app, amateur and experienced users alike have the chance to feel like they're flying the drone with a flick of their wrist." Deemed Avatar mode, GhostDrone 2.0 pilots steer the drone by merely angling their smartphone. The virtual reality goggles also pro- vide a first person view through a head-tracking camera. Video is live streamed directly into the goggles, so the pilot can easily see what their drone sees. The head-track- ing sensor follows your head's move- ments, up and down. Together, these elements make aerial filming easy and fun. Ease of use doesn't mean the GhostDrone has lost any of its high- tech specs. "We completely redesigned GhostDrone 2.0 from the ground up," Xiong said. "Our engineering depart- ment honed in on building better flight controls, power systems and a smart battery. What's more, the 2.0 has an upgraded global GPS system, which makes the drone much more stable when in-flight." The 2.0 also features a state-of- the-art power system to enable faster flight, made possible by a unique down-facing rotor and self-tightening pro- pellers. Reimagined landing gear guarantees an easier and safer take- off and landing experi- ence as well. For all of the pho- tography fans out there, the Ghost Drone 2.0 also offers a top-line tool for aerial footage: a 4k camera. With a res- olution that's four times higher than 1080p, you can say goodbye to the "fisheye" effect and look forward to the most clear aerial photos and videos you've ever taken. The 4k camera works perfectly with the Ghost's new three-axis gimbal, giving you the flex- ibility to change direction for that per- fect shot every time. In short? The GhostDrone 2.0's accessibility, married with top-line specs, has just ushered the drone mar- ket into a new era. For more information and to test it out for yourself, stop by the EHang booth at CES, #25208, LVCC South Hall 2.
