MIURA TABLES BY KONSTANTIN GRCIC By James Kasschau, CEO & President, ICF Group The minimal and elegant square-topped Miura Table by Konstantin Grcic for Plank provides a sophisticated solution for spaces requiring a flexible furniture system that can be rearranged easily. Chairs or stools can be positioned around single tables or placed along the edges of tables connected in rows of any length for more formal events. The Miura Table features a tripod base that permits the top to remain steady, even on irregular floors. This makes it suitable for use indoors or out- doors on a variety of different surfaces. From dinner on the terrace at home to important meetings at the office, the pos- sibility to use single or multiple tables means parties of any size can be accom- modated. Plank recently provided Miura Tables for the offices of the President of the provincial government of South Tyrol, Italy, where Plank is based. The tables are regularly arranged in rows, and Plank was able to source a discreet mech- anism that fixes the tables together in a quick and easy manner. The device also ensures the tops are level and at an even height, resulting in a single seamless sur- face. Other practical qualities of the Miura Table include its folding top, which can be flipped up to make storage easier. Its powder-coated metal base supports a sur- face made from metal, MDF or HPL, which is available in a range of shapes and sizes, but for scenarios where adapt- ability is vital, the square-topped version offers an optimal solution. Miura Tables with metal tops are suitable for indoor or outdoor use. Since he e s t a b l i s h e d Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design (KGID) in 1991, the Munich- based designer has developed furniture, objects and lighting for many leading companies in the design field. Grcic defines function in human terms, com- bining formal strictness with consider- able mental acuity and humor. He is often defined as a minimalist, but Konstantin prefers to speak of simplicity. In recent years, Plank has researched technological design possibilities and sustainability matters with designers of international renown. As a consequence, Plank's products have received numerous awards and acknowledgments – for instance, the XXII Compasso d'Oro ADI Design Award for its Myto chair and the IF Product Design Award – Gold selec- tion for its Miura stool. These products now form part of the permanent collec- tions of some of the most important museums – e.g. the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the International Design Museum in Munich, and the Design Museum of London as well as the Art Institute of Chicago. ICF is proud to represent Plank and its products in North America. HDSD: As the new Vice President of Commercial Sales at Karndean Design- flooring, what are you most excited about? MG: The breadth of products at Karndean is outstanding. Our newest introduction, Art Select Stones, are an industry-leading example of our design leadership. I'm excited to enter the posi- tion with such a strong product portfolio to present to our customers. HDSD: What are some of the things that you hope to bring to Karndean and the commercial marketplace? MG: I hope I can continue to expand and grow our market position as a leader in LVT design. HDSD: What are some of Karndean's biggest existing strengths within that marketplace? MG: Our collections of wood- and stone- effect designs are some of the best in the industry. Clearly this is the most critical attribute we offer, along with outstanding durability. Karndean's combination of service, product portfolio and value proposition are unmatched. The products are unrivaled for many commercial applications, and our sales team is dedi- cated to servicing architects, designers and flooring contractors. HDSD: You have a substantial back- ground in tile, and Karndean recently introduced a new collection: Art Select Stones. How does the new collection compare to real stone tile? MG: These products are simply incredi- ble. I think they are actually better than real stone. The visuals are taken from primer stones found in the best quarries in the world. The ease of maintenance and installation is superior to the maintenance and installation normal- ly associated with natural stone prod- ucts. Natural stone doesn't compare when it comes to the difference in affordability, maintenance, durability and versatility of Art Select Stones. HDSD: Why do you think this product line is an ideal fit for commercial envi- ronments? MG: For those looking for a natural stone environment, we offer the best visuals in LVT. The tiles install quickly, are easy to take care of and will last for the life of the structure. The products also are very clean and hygienic, and meet all major industry green standards; perfect for education and healthcare settings. HDSD: In addition to the Art Select Stones collection, what else does Karndean have to offer for commercial customers? MG: We offer wood designs in every visual style desired by the design com- munity, as well as cutting-edge stone designs. Our Opus collection, with its contemporary designs, is very popular in commercial spaces. We're proud to offer a very large col- lection of products with durable 20 and 30 mil wear layers – ideal for high traffic environments such as hospitals, restau- rants, schools or hotels.
