The Society's mission is to lead the steward- ship, planning and design of our built and natural environments. Nearly 80 percent of ASLA mem- bers work in private practice; 12 percent work in the public sector; five percent are full-time educators; and the remaining members are employed by developers, corporations and institutions. ASLA members work on projects of every type, scale and budget. Residential, urban design and parks/recreation are the largest markets, but planning, hospitality, campus design and healthcare represent significant practice sectors as well. Landscape architects collaborate with architects, civil engineers, urban planners, contractors, construction com- panies and many others in order to imple- ment design concepts. ASLA provides various opportunities throughout the year to connect with design professionals from the landscape architecture field. The ASLA Annual Meeting and EXPO is the largest gathering of land- scape architecture professionals and stu- ASLA (Cont'd. from p. 1) dents in the world. More than 5,000 attendees and nearly 500 exhibitors are expected to participate in the 2015 Annual Meeting and EXPO, November 6-9, in Chicago. This is an opportunity to network with landscape architects as well as access well-designed and high quality products and services. Landscape Architecture Magazine (LAM), ASLA's award-winning monthly magazine, features talented ASLA mem- bers' projects and how design ideas have transformed spaces using the natural environment. LAM is also a resource for products and services to be incorporated into the next project. In need of a landscape architect for a project? ASLA's Firm Finder tool is available to professionals seeking design help from a landscape architect. The list- ing includes firms across the United States available to collaborate, discuss and provide insight into how a landscape architect can be a part of projects. To connect with a landscape architect or access resources provided by ASLA, please visit booth #S1710 at the International Builders' Show. Also visit ASLA online at www.asla.org. your company. KM: We're a rainwater catchment com- pany. Typically you catch rain in a cistern or a barrel, but that can be impractical for storing large amounts of water. Each sec- tion of WaterFence is six feet high, seven feet long and 14 inches wide, and holds about 300 gallons. We have an 80 foot by 70 foot yard. Our fence would hold 13,000 gallons of water. A 13,000-gallon cistern would be over 18 feet tall and 12 feet around. Nobody wants to look at something that size in their backyard. CM: How did you start your company? KM: Our company started out as my 14- year-old son's science project. He was looking for a way to help solve California's drought situation. He said, 'What can we use that would be differ- ent?' He saw that everybody had a roof, everybody had gutters, and everybody had a fence. He said, 'Why not collect the rainwater in a fence?' He designed a pro- totype and won his school's science fair, the Sonoma County Science Fair and the San Francisco Bay Area Science Fair. CM: Tell our readers a little bit more about the fence. KM: It's professionally engineered and made from HDPE, or high density poly- ethylene, the same recyclable plastic that current cisterns are made out of. Each tank is connected to the next through a flexible hose, and it has ball valves if you wanted to isolate a tank. We made it with a flexible hose to withstand California earthquakes and wind. California has signed off on it, which has high standards. Most other states say, 'Well, if California signed off on it, it's okay with us.' CM: How close are you to selling the first fences? KM: We're in production mode right WaterFence (Cont'd. from p. 1) now, where we are doing our final testing on product. We're freezing it, we're heat- ing it and we're thoroughly testing it. We have the provisional utility patent, and we are ready to start installs very shortly. CM: Do you have an ideal customer? KM: Yes, new housing developments. With the drought the way that it is, by using the WaterFence, you can pretty much have landscaping any way you want. The typical use is outdoor use, although you can use it as potable water by running the water through a water filter and UV light system. It can also be used to keep your roof wet if there is an approaching fire, and that water gets recollected and is recircu- lated over and over until the fire dan- ger has passed. CM: Can you customize the appearance of the water fence? KM: Yes. You can have any type of face put on the outside of the fence, like a rock wall, a growing wall for tomatoes or other vegetables, or things like ivy. You can put wood on it as well, to get the look of a real wood fence. It's entirely up to you. Or you can have no facade. CM: What kind of interest have you gen- erated? KM: We've had representatives from the United Kingdom, Bermuda, Taiwan, Australia, the Philippines, along with most U.S. states asking when we can start delivering product.
