MAF Industries Inc. U.S.A., oper- ates nationally and internationally and has strategically located manufacturing and assembly facilities in California and Washington. MAF continues to grow in every fruit and vegetable equipment cat- egory. The keys to this success can be attributed to the investments both locally and internationally by the parent compa- ny, MAF-Roda Group, whereby research and development for new and improved product lines are continually being made. MAF has consistently demonstrated the ability to provide customers with a variety of options and solutions to meet their needs for their fresh fruit and veg- etable operations. MAF collaborates with one of its other North American sister companies of the MAF Roda Group called MAF AGROBTICA located Culiacan, Mexico. MAF also has established local service agents based in New York and Florida. The abilities of MAF extend way beyond the expertise in mechanical and optical hardware systems. MAF also engages in areas of responsibility involving food safety, worker safety, traceabili- ty and environmental issues. Innovative service standards have allowed MAF Industries Inc. to success- fully integrate and educate its customers on the use of VPN connections, where trouble-shooting and repair diagnostics can be accomplished without physically requiring a technician to be on site. Being a member of the MAF-Roda Group MAF Industries is able to formulate and plan new systems that take advantage of the worldwide exposure that the Group enjoys. Systems that have been in high demand include the companies' traceabil- ity systems, as well as robots for various sorting, packing and stacking functions. Due to the design, manufacturing and production capa- bilities of the overall MAF Roda group, MAF Industries has successfully been able to meet the tight deadline requirements and challenges that large projects can entail. This suc- cess is credited to the exchange of ideas between the Group, and the manufactur- ing capacities at the 11 other full produc- tion plants that are part of the Group. Customers from the U.S., Canada, Mexico and various countries throughout the world have identified that the MAF- Roda Group's strength in overall size and exposure to extremely large projects have allowed it to become the supplier of choice. HARRELL NUT DISPLAYS THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF PECANS How many times have you wanted a snack that tasted great and was filling, but also good for you? We're not talking about something in the land of make- believe. There really is something out there that fits the criteria. Pecans are becoming more recognized as a healthy part of a well-balanced diet. Antioxidant-Rich Pecans Naturally occurring antioxidants in pecans may help contribute to heart health and disease prevention, according to a study published in the January 2011 issue of "The Journal of Nutrition." Antioxidants are dietary substances that have been shown to delay aging and decrease the risk of cancer, heart disease and neurological diseases like Alzheimer's. Researchers at Loma Linda University discovered that after eating pecans, gamma-tocopherols (a form of the antioxidant vitamin E) doubled in their test subjects and unhealthy oxida- tion of LDL (bad) cholesterol decreased by as much as 33 percent. The study ana- lyzed biomarkers from a total of 16 men and women between the ages of 23 and 44 who ate a sequence of three diets com- posed of whole pecans, a pecan smooth- ie, and a control meal of equivalent nutri- ent composition. Pecans have more antioxidants than any other tree nut, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Using a method called Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, researchers analyzed 277 different foods and found that pecans rank highest among all nuts in antioxidant capacity. Overall, pecans rank in the top 20 for antioxidants among all foods. Cholesterol-Lowering Pecans Pecans also play a role in low- ering cholesterol. Clinical research published in September 2001 issue of "The Journal of Nutrition" compared the Step-I diet (28 percent fat) recommend- ed by the American Heart Association for individuals with high cholesterol levels, to a pecan-enriched (40 percent fat) diet. The result was that the pecan- enriched diet lowered total cholesterol levels by 11.3 percent, and LDL cho- lesterol levels by 16.5 percent, twice that of the Step-I diet, without any associated weight gain. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has acknowl- edged this and related research, and approved the following qualified health claim: "Scientific evidence suggests but does not prove, that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts, such as pecans, as part of a diet low in saturat- ed fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease." Pecans May Provide Neurological Protection Research published in the June 2010 issue of "Current Topics in Nutraceutical Research" suggests that pecans may play a role in protecting the nervous system. The study, conducted at the Center for Cellular Neurobiology at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, demonstrates that pecans likely con- tributed to a delay in the progression of age-related motor neuron degeneration in mice. Researchers say the antioxidants in pecans are probably the reason for this positive sign. Three groups of mice were fed a control diet or two different types of pecan-rich diets. Mice that ate pecans displayed a significant delay in decline of motor function compared to mice receiv- ing no pecans.
