Mantilla, CPP, President, Security, Logistics, Environment and Management (SLEM). OSD: Tell me a bit about SLEM. What is your main line of business? DDM: SLEM is a security consulting firm specialized in risk analysis of criti- cal infrastructure, vulnerabilities assess- ment of industrialized facilities and implementation of risk management pro- grams and reduction of losses. OSD: What would you say makes your company unique? DDM: We are the first company of Ecuador that offers quantitative risk analysis and development of risk man- agement programs based on the assess- ment threats and vulnerabilities of an organization. OSD: What product are you marketing this year at ASIS? DDM: With our partner Alion Science and Technology, we are marketing a risk analy- sis tool that we use called Counter- Measures ® Risk Analysis Software. OSD: How long has SLEM been using CounterMeasures? DDM: We founded CounterMeasures (CM™) in 2006 while doing research for a U.S Federal organization that was try- ing to determine the best use of risk analysis applications for counterterror- ism. Since then, we have used CM with many customers. OSD: In what security environments have you used CM? DDM: Initially we used it as a risk analy- sis tool for physical security, but we found that it is easily adaptable to other security/safety management systems. OSD: Can you give me an example of how you've applied it? DDM: Sure, in Mexico we used CM to evaluate the security of ports using dif- ferent codes and standards. Teams con- ducted an integrated assessment across several port security standards that had been loaded into the program, including: IMO ISPS Code, C/TPAT, ISO 28000, the International Customs Organization SAFE Framework, 33 CFR 105 used by the U. S. Coast Guard and the BASC rules into the application. OSD: What are the benefits of the CM program to a user? DDM: Increased productivity is one key benefit. CM has allowed SLEM to pres- ent results on complex organizations in short time. In a recent example, we were able to analyze the physical security of a government-owned bank, distributed nationwide in less than two weeks. Teams conducted assessments in many cities concurrently and a preliminary report from the system was discussed with the branch manager after each inspection. Meanwhile, the data flowed to the central analysts who compiled the integrated report to be ready by the end of the field visits. Without automation, this would have taken months not weeks. OSD: What is the outlook for SLEM and CM? DDM: We are focusing on expanding the "datasets," which are the rule sets associ- ated with different assets, threats and con- trols. Because there is no dataset that will fit all enterprises or standards, our analysts draw upon a library of previously devel- oped, standards-based datasets and then customize the checklists within a few hours of work. By expanding the types of datasets, we continue to make the tool use- ful to a wider client base in the health, safety, security, environment arenas. Our technology can give complete situa- tional awareness of all cellular and transmission activity throughout their facility. OSD: Who are your main customers? DF: Our main customers are govern- ment/military organizations, corrections facilities, corporations, industries and TSCM's. We also have customers in the gaming industry and a whole range of other businesses all over the world. OSD: How do your customers use your technology? DF: Our government and military cus- tomers use our technology to secure SCIF's and classified areas to protect their top secret and highly sensitive information. Corrections facilities are able to detect, locate and confiscate contraband cell phones so that inmates are not able to continue their criminal activities behind bars. We help corpora- tions protect their intellectual property by preventing the use of cell phones to copy and transmit trade secrets and other highly sensitive data. Industrial uses include the prevention of cell phone use while operating machinery and bringing mobile devices into haz- ardous areas. Our technology can be used between TSCM scanning to ensure no new threats are introduced. The gaming industry is using our tech- nology to detect cheating, while small businesses such as lawyers can use our devices to ensure client privacy during conversations. OSD: What do you anticipate to be your Cellbusters (Cont'd. from p. 1) greatest challenge in the year ahead? DF: One of the biggest security issues ahead is the rise of insider threats – employees that may be disgruntled or have criminal intent using cellular and other transmission devices to transmit data, photos or conversations to literal- ly anywhere in the world in real time. There have been a few high profile sto- ries of this in the last couple of years, including the Bradley Manning and Edward Snowden data leaking. In many cases, employers and institutions have not even started to realize the threat from cell phones and other transmission devices. We would like to invite them to our booth to see the technology in use, and see how it may help them plan for their future security needs. OSD: To what do you attribute your company's success? DF: I think great technology, continu- ous improvement, and taking the feed- back from our customers to improve our technology. We have also improved the ease of use of the tech- nology for our customers. One of our recent products was the introduction of the cloud-based Zone Manager soft- ware. We took the headache of main- taining a server away from the cus- tomer, and all they have to do is log into their browser to access the man- agement system. Our detectors can also be used standalone, so in most cases they can be used right out of the box with little or no technical ability.
