Very little is known about the saskatoon berry, which is grown in the great white north of North America. This deep purple fruit, packing a punch of health attributes, has been Canada's best kept secret when it comes to the increasingly popular superfruits. Saskatoon berries are a superfruit with high concentrations of antioxidants and minerals like potassium, iron, cal- cium, magnesium, and vitamin E. Saskatoon berries carry 24 grams of total dietary fiber in each 100 grams of dry matter. There is no doubt about the health benefits of these berries. Manitoba's Agri-Health Research Network is now conducting phase 1 human clinical trials to explore the potential effect of these berries on kidney disease patients and of the natural presence of cycloxygenase inhibitors, similar to those found in the pain reliever ibuprofen. Prairie Berries Inc of Keeler, SK is currently investi- gating the potential to use Saskatoon antioxidants as natural medicines for diseases. A study done by C.Hu, B.H.L. Kwok and D.D Kitts concluded that Saskatoon Berries are good source of anthocyanins (Phyto-chemi- cal Antioxidant). The research indicates that Saskatoon berries have higher levels of antioxidants com- pared to more common berries such as strawberries, wild blueberries, and raspberries. Technically, the saskatoon berry (amelanchier alnifolia) is not a berry but a pome fruit, like the apple. Saskatoon berries grow native to the prairie provinces in Canada, and there are 27 known cultivars grown in North America. The saskatoon berry got its name from the Cree inanimate noun "misaskwatomina." Cree is an Prairie Berries (Cont'd. from p. 1) Algonquin language spoken by more than 100,000 people in Canada and is the most spoken of the aboriginal lan- guages in the great white north. Consumers are looking for more natural and healthy fruits to add into their diet, but they don't have to sacri- fice the environment by having to buy imported foreign fruits. While one saskatoon berry tree emits enough oxy- gen to sustain 18 people for a life time, Prairie Berries orchard emits enough oxygen to sustain 1.98 million people for a life time. Tucked away in rural Saskatchewan, Prairie Berries is not only growing but also processing a line of eco-friendly health products such as Saskatoon berry concentrate, powders, juice, puree, dried berries and IQF berries.
