Oser Founder EdTech Show Daily Tuesday, February 6, 2018 4 How to Wire Carts in 30 Minutes or Less One of the most important features to consider when choosing a laptop cart is cable management. When scheduling your charging station deployment, remember to factor in the time (and expense) of wiring the carts and setting up the power bricks. No one really has the budget to invest hours and hours of IT staff time managing power and syncing cables. The less time it takes, the better for you, your IT staff and your deploy- ment schedule. It can take anywhere from 30 min- utes (minimum) to 90 minutes, or more, to wire one charging cart, depending on the device and the cart. Some manufac- turers use clip systems, which can be dif- ficult to wire and can make removing the devices cumbersome. Some clip systems are on the front and others are on the slots. Either way, they can easily break off and get lost. To minimize wiring time, look for a quick-wiring system, which can include sliding wire holders or a guillotine sys- tem. Black Box carts have a sliding rapid wiring system that significantly reduces wiring time, is easier to use and enables fast changes in future use. Another bonus of the Black Box system is that it enables faster distribution of devices during class. Here's how a Black Box customer, Will Howey from Applied Data Technologies, described the system when he was prepar- ing 1,300 carts for deployment (in under six weeks) in the C h a r l o t t e - M e c k l e n b u r g School District: "The cable man- agement system on the carts allowed us to wire each cart in under 30 minutes," said Howey. "From my experience, that's two to three times faster than other cart manufacturers." To see the entire case study or a video showing the wiring sys- tem, go to www.blackbox.com/carts. What K-12 Technology Adoption Really Means By Jan Mills, ClassLink, Senior Vice President, Instructional Technology A quick scan of recent education technol- ogy headlines will reveal a number of companies announcing that a district has recently adopted their solution. The intent is to influence districts that are evaluating solutions by showcasing other districts that have made the same deci- sion. However, what these technology adoption announcements fail to show- case is whether these products are used in earnest, with fidelity and with sustainable consistency. A new decision to purchase or even a recent implementation is only the beginning stage of what both the provider and the district should consider a long-term relationship. With that in mind, it's time we talk about what K-12 technology adoption really means. We can start by summariz- ing at a high level what the overall adop- tion cycle looks like. In our experience, we see school districts generally take a five step approach to adopting new t e c h n o l o g i e s : research, pilot, selection, imple- mentation and analytics. Notice that the word 'adoption' is not a stage or a step in this process. Instead, it's the end- goal. It's the outcome of all the efforts that go into researching, testing, imple- mentation and yes, actually using the product. Any announcement about dis- tricts adopting a particular solution is Continued on Page 25
