Wireless World 3 7 Thursday, September 8, 2016 provide connected wind turbines, con- nected jet engines. It will also have rele- vance on the consumer side where we will download 4K videos in seconds to view on any device, anywhere, anytime. WW: What is Ericsson doing to advance 5G? GL: Ericsson is at the center of the 5G ecosystem, driving its standardization as well as developing the critical network capabilities that 5G will deliver and enable. We're working on 5G use cases with our largest customers. One example is fixed wireless access – replacing fiber in the last 300-500 meters with 5G. Another use case is enhanced mobile broadband - using 5G together with 4G to increase capacity and speed. We are demonstrating speeds of 25 gigabits per second over the air, so the capacity gain from 5G is significant. WW: Could you explain more about Ericsson's perspective on 5G and how the concept of "Network Slicing" relates to it? GL: 5G is not just about the access net- work; it's about the access network and the core network working together. In the access network, we're working on advanced technologies like beam-form- ing and massive multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) technologies. Together these are delivering capacity levels we've never been able to achieve over the air before. In the core network, we're working on key enabling tech- nologies like network function virtual- ization (NFV) and software defined net- Ericsson (Cont'd. from p. 1) working (SDN), which form the basis of "network slicing" – the ability to dynamically offer up the network resources necessary to meet the needs of multiple high-demand applications, all from the same physical network. Demonstrations showcasing these solu- tions are available live this week in the Ericsson booth. WW: From Ericsson's perspective, what is the Internet of Things and how will 5G enable its growth? GL: The Internet of Things is really about three key overarching use cases: it's about massive broadband every- where; it's about massive machine-type communications – everything that bene- fits from a connection will be connected; and it's about critical machine-type com- munications – applications that require ultra-low latency like autonomous vehi- cles or ultra-high security like sharing healthcare data. 5G will be the connec- tivity platform for all of these. WW: How long before we see the bene- fits of 5G? GL: We plan to start rolling out 5G in the 2020 timeframe – or sooner – as our use cases come to market. In a recent survey (www.ericsson.com/thecompany/our_pu blications/ericsson_business_review/ issue1_2016/what-100-operators-really- think-about-5g), we found that most operators believe their trials will begin between 2017 and 2018. This will create the opportunity for an explosion of inno- vation on the 5G platform. For more information, stop by booth #4322 or go to www.ericsson.com. TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. WW: Who are Comtech's customers? JW: Comtech has always served a diverse customer base in the global com- mercial and government communications markets, and through the TeleCommunication Systems acquisi- tion, the company's customer base has significantly expanded and moved us into a number of new market segments. In addition to wireless carriers, enterpris- es and government agencies, we now also serve automotive OEMs, healthcare companies, third-party developers and others. WW: You were recently named to CTIA's Board of Directors. What can you tell us about your role? JW: I'm serving on an executive com- mittee and will work closely with the organization's officers and fellow board members as an advocate for the Other Supplier members. The election process includes nominations of regional carrier members. They may elect nine directors to the board, and Other Supplier mem- bers may elect eight directors to the board. I represent one of the eight. I am particularly excited about CTIA's recent announcement to partner with GSMA on a new mobile industry event in the United States. The GSMA Mobile World Congress Americas will be GSMA's first large-scale U.S-based event and will be the first truly global wireless event in the Americas. Comtech Telecommunications (Cont'd. from p. 1) WW: What are you planning to feature at CTIA Super Mobility Week? JW: CTIA Super Mobility Week is an ideal opportunity for us to showcase how Comtech is moving forward with its expanded portfolio of best-in-class solutions. A key area we will be focus- ing on this year is our location plat- forms and applications, and we are extremely excited to showcase our new Location Studio. Leveraging more than 20 years' experience in LBS, Location Studio pro- vides mobile carriers, application devel- opers and enterprises with a service plat- form for building cloud-based, embedded and hybrid LBS applications. Equipped with the fundamental technologies for any location-intelligent application, Location Studio provides a series of SDKs designed to make it easy for devel- opers and enterprises to integrate loca- tion intelligence into a large variety of applications ranging from search and navigation to fleet management, fraud management for financial applications, asset tracking, workforce and family locator applications, and other IoT appli- cations. The platform also can be used to build complete, end-to-end, indoor and outdoor LBS solutions tailored to meet the specific needs of various vertical markets. CTIA Super Mobility Week provides us with valuable one-on-one time with stakeholders and others to share ideas that will continue to fuel development of products going forward. WW: How does the ACH Network con- nect people and payments? JE: Today, the ACH Network process- es 24 billion transactions annually totaling more than $41 trillion. Consumers use the ACH Network to efficiently move funds in and out of their bank accounts. For example, they use the ACH Network for bill payments – to the tune of 800 million per month. They also use the Network for mobile/online payments and person-to- person payments. These transactions serve as one of the Network's fastest growing transaction types. Additionally, the ACH Network serves as the system through which Direct Deposits are processed. More than 80 percent of employees now use Direct Deposit to receive their pay. WW: What does the future hold for the ACH Network? JE: The ACH Network continually evolves to adapt to an ever changing environment and ensure we are meeting the needs of consumers. One of our recent efforts to meet the demand for "faster payments" was the development of Same Day ACH. So in addition to the Network's ability to process transac- tions next-day, the Network can now process transactions the same day as well. This faster payments capability NACHA (Cont'd. from p. 1) provides new opportunities for the industry and for consumers. It really serves as a building block to the future of faster payments. WW: How will Same Day ACH impact your average consumer? JE: There are many ways that Same Day ACH could impact consumers, but the easiest scenario to use to demonstrate its impact is with bill payment. Same Day ACH will provide consumers with the opportunity to pay for a bill on the day it is due, which could eliminate a disrup- tion or cancellation of service, a late fee or other inconvenience. WW: What about the businesses receiv- ing Same Day ACH payments from con- sumers? How does this benefit them? JE: For businesses, Same Day ACH allows them to provide choice and con- venience to their customers, and better customer service. And it provides the added benefit of cost savings and effi- ciencies to their business. Already busi- nesses are planning to use Same Day ACH to provide better customer service. Insurance companies can use Same Day ACH to deliver funds for an insurance claim on the day when the claim is satis- fied, or governments could rapidly deliv- er benefits in a disaster situation. Businesses, governments and consumers alike will all benefit from Same Day ACH. Iridium, the world's only truly global low-Earth orbit (LEO) satel- lite constellation and leader in the M2M industry, is experiencing increased interest for reliable, global data connectivity solu- tions from energy companies around the world in support of these corporate pro- grams, even during these slower times. Companies who rely on the Iridium net- work can have the piece of mind that valu- able machinery and assets can be tracked, monitored and managed from anywhere on the globe, even in places where cellular networks are compromised. Iridium (Cont'd. from p. 4) With roughly 80 percent of the earth lacking cellular and terrestrial-based com- munications coverage, Iridium fills this gap in connectivity by providing 100 per- cent global coverage. The network is ideal for companies in need of communicating in remote areas and in rugged environ- ments. Additionally, Iridium connectivity is resistant against inclement weather since the constellation operates in L-band. Thus, Iridium is the trusted network com- panies of all sizes can depend on for glob- al and reliable satellite communications. For more information, stop by booth #5632 or go to www.iridium.com.
