Today, Aeries ® Student Information System is a market leader currently supporting over 575 school dis- tricts and local education agencies (LEAs) and supports more than 2.6 mil- lion students at more than 4,000 school sites. Aeries Software takes pride in being known as a family run business that is a leader in the marketplace. ESD: What products does Aeries Software provide to schools? BL: Aeries Software brings a complete ecosystem of tools that benefit both school operation and classroom manage- ment. Aeries SIS and Portals provides state and federal mandated school man- agement information and processes with easy to use browser-based access for quick access to critical information for educators, parents and students. This includes a fully comprehensive fully inte- grated gradebook. Aeries Online Enrollment allows parents to quickly start the process of enrolling a new student. Aeries Analytics Dashboards and Early Warning System provides an unlimited number of customizable and actionable dashboards with drill-down capabilities to be shared. This system also includes a robust Early Warning System to alert edu- cators about students that are at-risk before it is too late. Configurable indica- tors and thresholds utilizes the entire stu- dent information data warehouse, such as attendance, discipline, grade book grade status, report cards, programs, etc., pro- viding a true multi-measurement of stu- dent success. Finally, Aeries Software provides Aeries Emergency App designed to provide school and district administra- tors untethered access to student informa- tion when they need it the most. ESD: How important is educational sys- Aeries Software (Cont'd. from p. 1) tem interoperability, and what responsi- bility should student information systems have in the process? BL: Educational interoperability is extremely important in today's dynamic educational landscape. With so many dif- ferent educational systems being offered, every SIS has an obligation to its cus- tomers to truly allow its SIS to coexist with other systems. Interoperability gives educators the capability to push and pull student data with a single "click." In addition to digital data integration, advanced interoperability can provide single sign-on (SSO) that reduce IT (Help Desk) account management costs, improve compliance and security capa- bilities and improve teacher efficiency in the enhanced products. True interoper- ability, which we provide, gives our cus- tomers the flexibility to select products capable of meeting its needs and allow- ing for the creation of a powerful educa- tional environment that benefits adminis- trators and teachers, but most important- ly, millions of students. ESD: Where do you believe your indus- try is heading and what role do you fore- see your company playing? BL: Student Information Systems will continue to adapt and innovate based on new technologies available and require- ments dictated to school districts. Aeries SIS will continue to be at the forefront of this trend by focusing on open sharing of student information to both third party products through an Open API and to parents and students through mobile apps with push notifications that instantly deliver the student's current status in multiple key areas. Aeries Software remains committed to being a leader in the student information system industry. We should not have to worry about sending our children to school, going to class at colleges and universi- ties, or even going to work. Digital sig- nage can play a key role in alerting individuals and crowds of an emer- gency. ESD: What can we do to better notify individuals and the public of an emer- gency? NW: The National Fire Protection Act 72 (NFPA) states that all publicly facing dis- plays must alert individuals of an emer- gency event within the location. Digital signage can be customized for the type of emergency situation that is currently hap- pening and display the appropriate infor- mation. The most accessible evacuation route can even be displayed in only a matter of seconds. I believe this could Hypersign (Cont'd. from p. 1) help save lives. ESD: What do you think will become a trend in digital signage for 2016? NW: Throughout the second half of 2015, intelligent way finding using Bluetooth low energy (BLE) has become more prevalent. Businesses are using way find- ing with their marketing and sales efforts. Airports are using way finding in the form of interactive maps to display information regarding what can be found in each con- course. For the upcoming year, I believe that there is huge potential utilizing emer- gency alerts, along with way finding to keep individuals safe and secure in any type of environment, especially within education. However, this could bring about new challenges regarding privacy versus safety. These things will have to be addressed in upcoming months. One reason the HoverCam is smaller than traditional document cameras is because zooming is done with the high-resolution sensor and not bulky and expensive opti- cal components, according to the manu- facturer. HoverCam calls it ASR Zoom for Adaptive Sensor Resolution, which allows for fast digital zooming without any loss of image quality. Solo 8 is multifunctional. It can be used to scan documents, as a digital cam- era, HD webcam, grading camera and video recorder. "Demand for Solo 8 was greater than we anticipated and I want to personally apologize to all Texas schools that had to wait last summer and fall," Justice said. HoverCam (Cont'd. from p. 4) "For those who waited, they got the best product. The good news is our factory has been ramping up production and we now have plenty of inventory." At TCEA, HoverCam will unveil a new product that takes aim at the low end of the market, called the HoverCam Z5. "This is the best $99 document camera in the world," Justice said. "We recommend schools purchase Solo 8 because it's bet- ter, but if their budget is only $99, we suggest they take a look at the Z." Solo 8 is available through education technology resellers with a price to schools of $349. HoverCam manufac- tures a full range of document cameras from the $99 Z5 to the $449 Ultra 8. OneRoster OneRoster is an agreed upon CSV tem- plate and REST API for sharing class ros- ters between a Student Information System (SIS) and any another system (typically an LMS or some other content solution). OneRoster is the newest K-12 focused standard developed by IMS and it is gain- ing serious traction in education. Systems that adopt the OneRoster standard, espe- cially the REST API, allow schools to stop the madness of manually creating unique class roster data extracts, the insecure emailing and FTP'ing them and the frus- tration of the knowing the data is out of date minutes after the extract is produced. With OneRoster's REST API, pub- lishers can receive an automated feed of ClassLink (Cont'd. from p. 4) class rosters to ensure all users have logins and those users are in the right class groups. Missing logins and incor- rect class groups are major stumbling blocks to ensuring online resources are used in the classroom. Everyone Benefits IT leaders benefit from open tech stan- dards thanks to greater input, better con- trol and a more uniform approach to managing data. Teachers benefit thanks to improved access along with better, more accurate rosters. Companies benefit from streamlined, secure and collaborate methods for sharing data. Education initiatives that create last- ing value for all stakeholders can be a rarity, but thanks to IMS Global and stan- dards like OneRoster, education technol- ogy is going to benefit for many years to come. Step 1: Prepare Streamline the deployment process by enrolling your school in Apple's Device Enrollment Program (DEP) and Volume Purchase Program (VPP) at deploy.apple.com. Consider your Apple ID strategy and choose whether to deploy apps to a user's Apple ID or directly to a device. Ensure enough bandwidth to handle your new devices. Once the strong con- nection is in place, link the Casper Suite to DEP. The Casper Suite is a collection of Mac and iOS management tools. The core of the suite is the JAMF Software Server (JSS) that acts just like a Web server. The JSS can be hosted on any existing OS X, Windows or Linux server on-premise or via the JAMF Cloud sub- scription. Step 2: Configure With the Casper Suite installed, you can begin to build your Configuration Profiles. These are XML files that act like a recipe for your device settings and are deployed via the Casper Suite. Devices will need to be supervised in order to receive profiles. This can be done with DEP and configured in the JSS. Step 3: Purchase Apps and Books Decide your method for purchasing and distributing content: either Managed Distribution or redeemable codes. If JAMF Software (Cont'd. from p. 1) choosing user-based deployments, which require an Apple ID, invite users via a VPP invitation to gain access to the con- tent you have assigned them. If you'd like users to be able to install approved apps on their own without IT assistance, you can use the Casper Suite Self Service app. Self Service is an app that acts like an internal App Store for your school. Self Service can contain apps linked to VPP, free apps, eBooks, PDFs and Configuration Profiles. Step 4: Deploy When handing out devices to students, consider multiple stations in the gymnasi- um that offer a logical flow. Next, enroll your devices through DEP, user-initiated enrollment or Apple Configurator. Step 5: Manage Update Self Service with new content and encourage usage. You can also lever- age Push Notifications to send communi- cations directly to devices. Casper Focus can now be set up for streamlined class- room management. Casper Focus is a free app that comes with the Casper Suite and runs on the teacher's iPad. Casper Focus allows teachers to focus student's iPads to a single app or website to help streamline transitions.
