In the 18 months since HoverCam began shipping the Solo 8 document camera in volume, its sales have shot through the roof, resulting in backorders last summer and autumn. "Solo 8 is the document camera rein- vented," said Craig Justice, HoverCam Vice President of Sales. "It was the first and still is the only document camera with true 8-megapixel resolution that provides uncompressed 1080p video over USB 3.0. In the two years since we first showed the product, no other manu- facturer has been able to release nearly anything as good at this price point," Justice said. "It's an education revolution powered by a USB cord." The unit is powered by a USB cable connected to the computer. It's compati- ble with PCs and Macs and works well with computers with older USB ports too, according to the manufacturer. Factory production has caught up with the high demand, Justice said. One of the unique abilities of Solo 8 is recording no-lag HD video over USB directly to the computer. "More and more teachers want to record video to enhance their lessons, as a teaching tool or for flipping their class. The Solo 8 is a great tool for recording video and it's the only docu- ment camera that can record no-lag HD video over USB directly to the comput- er," Justice said. Solo 8, which weighs just over two pounds, has a base three inches by three inches and is significantly smaller than OPEN TECH STANDARDS FROM IMS GLOBAL: A PRIMER FOR K-12 By Berj Akian, Chief Executive Officer, ClassLink With IMS Global Learning Consortium gaining support across the technical com- munity, and as education technology leaders converge in Austin for TCEA 2016, ClassLink is encouraging all stake- holders – educators, technology leaders and solution providers – to join the call for industry-wide adoption of open tech- nology standards. In 1995, a group of concerned edu- cators and industry partners within EDU- CAUSE came together wanting to estab- lish a standard format for exchanging data between different data systems. Since that time, IMS has developed many standards for data exchange. What are the standards K-12 needs to know? IMS Global has produced four key stan- dards that we think are essential for school success in today's digital learning age: LTI, Common Cartridge, Thin Common Cartridge and OneRoster. We are going to explore two in detail that are making a big difference in schools. LTI (a.k.a. Learning Tools Interoperability; LTI Link; LTI Launch Link; LTI Connector) LTI is a standard for authenticating a user into another system and getting back spe- cific content. There are multiple editions of this Standard (v1.0, v1.2 and v2.0) and they are all active. The classic use case for LTI is that someone currently logged into one system, e.g. an LMS, can click an LTI link which instantly delivers targeted con- tent from another system, e.g. an e-text or some other content repository.
