C o n s u m e r E l e c t r o n i c s D a i l y N e w s W e d n e s d a y, J a n u a r y 6 , 2 0 1 6 3 0 LATEST INNOVATIONS FROM DEXCOM An interview with Jake Leach, Senior Vice President of Research and Development at Dexcom. CEDN: What's the latest innovation from Dexcom? JL: Dexcom G5™ Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system is the first and only FDA-approved device that transmits your glucose readings directly to your iPhone. For the first time, users can leave their display device at home and discreetly check their glucose levels on their phone throughout the day. Dexcom G5 Mobile provides trending glucose levels and readings every five minutes (Dexcom G5 Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring System, User's Guide, 2015), so users can see which direction their glucose is headed. Also, Dexcom G5 Mobile is approved for patients ages two years old and above. Dexcom is also leading the industry with using the cloud to share data between multiple devices and apps. Our focus is to protect all private health data, while at the same time allowing our users to access their data and share it to help them better manage their diabetes. CEDN: What can we expect to see from Dexcom in the future? JL: We are truly excited about our part- nership with Google. We plan to co- develop a product designed to provide glucose information for patients, as well as their healthcare providers. Our goal is to provide personalized tools to help make appropriate lifestyle and behavior choices to improve their diabetes man- agement. CEDN: How do you see precision medi- cine tying into diabetes care? JL: On a daily basis, we are pro- viding precision medicine for our patients who use Dexcom CGM. Our exceptional sensor accuracy provides readings every five min- utes that our users can trust (Dexcom G5 Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring System, User's Guide, 2015). With this data, we are able to show trends and alert the user to the speed that their glucose is rising or drop- ping. We provide patients with very per- sonalized tools to manage their diabetes – I can't think of everyday medicine that's more precise than that. CEDN: One of the topics at CES revolves around the business models for digital health and partnerships. How do you think companies can learn from Dexcom? JL: At Dexcom, we support the concept of patients making their own lifestyle choices in choosing different ways to manage their diabetes – whether that includes insulin pumps, CGM, injections, etc. We want to support further develop- ing products in those areas. We currently have partnerships with insulin pump manufacturers where we're integrating the next genera- tion of CGM into those pump products to help streamline the devices and manage- ment for patients. We are also actively working in the Artificial Pancreas project along with other research and clinical trials. Precise and reliable data is imperative for getting new products and procedures FDA approved. Our commitment and consis- tent delivery of exceptional sensor accu- racy is the reason why we are the sensor of choice among many researchers. GHOSTDRONE 2.0 BY EHANG MAKES FLYING EASY FOR EVERYONE By now, most of us would agree that con- sumer drones are here to stay. But even though drones have been edging into the mainstream market, enthusiasts have largely been limited to a group of tech savvy hobbyists and professionals aim- ing to capture slick aerial footage – in other words, not your everyday con- sumer. But a new surge in technology and forward-thinking companies in the indus- try are aiming to change all of that. UAV company EHang Inc., (CES, #25208, LVCC South Hall 2) is at the forefront of this shift, and its latest drone – The GhostDrone 2.0 – has turned the industry on its head by creating a drone that makes the piloting experience acces- sible to anyone. Founded in 2014 by Huazhi Hu, a successful information technology entrepreneur and flying enthusiast, EHang launched GhostDrone 2.0 with the intent of developing a truly immersive flying experience by combin- ing first-person virtual reality and ges- ture-based tilt control to replace unwieldy RCA controls. "The GhostDrone 2.0 has transformed the piloting experience," explained Derrick Xiong, Co-founder of Ehang, headquartered in Guangzhou, China, with offices in Beijing and San Francisco. "My founder and I always felt that drones were too unapproachable for the average con- sumer, even though they stood so much to gain from flying them. That notion was at the center of everything we built for the GhostDrone 2.0; with the accompanying EHang Play smartphone app, amateur and experienced users alike have the chance to feel like they're flying the drone with a flick of their wrist." Deemed Avatar mode, GhostDrone 2.0 pilots steer the drone by merely angling their smartphone. The virtual reality goggles also pro- vide a first person view through a head-tracking camera. Video is live streamed directly into the goggles, so the pilot can easily see what their drone sees. The head-tracking sen- sor follows your head's movements, up and down. Together, these elements make aerial filming easy and fun. Ease of use doesn't mean the GhostDrone has lost any of its high-tech specs. "We completely redesigned GhostDrone 2.0 from the ground up," Xiong said. "Our engineering department honed in on building better flight con- trols, power systems and a smart battery. What's more, the 2.0 has an upgraded global GPS system, which makes the drone much more stable when in-flight." The 2.0 also features a state-of-the- art power system to enable faster flight, made possible by a unique down-facing rotor and self-tightening propellers. Reimagined landing gear guarantees an easier and safer take- off and landing experi- ence as well. For all of the photog- raphy fans out there, the Ghost Drone 2.0 also offers a top-line tool for aerial footage: a 4k camera. With a resolution that's four times higher than 1080p, you can say goodbye to the "fish- eye" effect and look forward to the most clear aerial photos and videos you've ever taken. The 4k camera works perfect- ly with the Ghost's new three-axis gim- bal, giving you the flexibility to change direction for that perfect shot every time. In short? The GhostDrone 2.0's accessibility, married with top-line specs, has just ushered the drone market into a new era.
